Zone’s Miyu Returns! Sort Of…

Filed in American Wota 1.0

When I found out Miyu had appeared in last week’s Music Station, I was thrilled. Sure, she was going to be a guest for some other band – but at least we can see her and find out how she’s doing.

The good news is that she looks great. The bad news is that her appearance was in a lousy song by a band I don’t care for and she doesn’t get to sing anything but backup.

Here’s Miyu when she first arrives as a surprise guest with some other girl – I didn’t catch the name, mostly because all I could think of was Miyu – as backup singers for TUBE’s new single, “B B Q”.

She looks absolutely, stunningly great, doesn’t she? God, how time flies. It’s been over a year since Zone broke up, I’m finally over them, Maria just released their second single…

… and yet seeing Miyu melted my heart all over again.

I felt lovesick, the way I’ve often felt lovesick for all the girls of Zone when they were still together. And of course this return led to heartache as well, since it’s been so long since I’ve seen Miyu and there’s that desperate happiness in just seeing how beautiful she is and knowing she’s (apparently) doing well. It was like ripping open an old wound, except that pain is mixed with some kind of endorphin rush of sweet release.

No, I don’t know what I’m talking about.

She’s certainly grown up some, hasn’t she? She’s lost all of her baby fat now and there’s more definition to her cheekbones. She’s let her hair grow out some, too. Maybe all the Zone girls grew their hair out post-breakup.

Of course, now I’m also wondering how Mizuho and especially Tomoka are doing. Can’t Studio Runtime find something for Tomoka to do? A new band to front? Maybe a power trio?

As for the performance on Music Station, well… I was forced to listen to a crap summer song in the hopes that Miyu’d have at least one solo line. It wasn’t going to happen.

The guy who fronts TUBE looks ridiculous, trying a bit too hard to be a party kinda guy. I’m not sure if this is what he’s always like or if he’s just getting in the mood for the song.

Anyway, there are a dozen girls in bikinis – some of them quite nice eyecandy I’m sure – and even shots of delicious-seeming food roasting on a grill, though I couldn’t tell you what exactly was cooking.

No, I just kept my eye out for Miyu, who only gets one real good shot during the performance…

That shot made it worth sitting through the song, however.

It’s like what Billy Bragg sang once: “Like a bully boy in a Benetton shop / You’re never happy with what you’ve got / Till what you’ve got is gone.” Miyu’s been gone too long and now I just want her to be back in the spotlight.

Fuck the backup singer shit. She should be front and center. I’m not going to complain if she decides to do R&B instead of rock (okay, I may complain a little but I’ll make my overwhelming gratitude as obvious as possible despite that). I won’t complain if she releases only one single a year because she wants to do school as well.

I want the diva of bandols back, and I want her back now. I want her doing singles and releasing DVDs and making photobooks both with and without swimwear and appearing on as many fucking music shows as she can.

But really, I’m just hoping this is a prelude to her re-introduction to the music scene. That can’t be so much to ask for, at least.

And let’s just note: Miyu’s figure has ripened along with her pretty face.

That’s the only reason I’m subjecting you to these shots with the TUBE guy front-and-center. Ignore him, just focus to the left and appreciate Miyu.

I’ll say this about “B B Q”: if I want a mindless but fun summer song from a band I can’t give a damn about, I’d choose Orange Range’s “Locolotion”. That song at least had some teeth to it, capturing the horny illicit fun of the summer months as well as the sun-soaked feel-good vibe. It also had one of the most patently offensive PVs of all time, but that’s a topic for another time…

In comparison, “B B Q” is bland and vaguely forgettable. It’s audio filler, using the tropes and images of summertime – the goofy clothes, the girls in bikinis – to hide the fact that this particular emperor isn’t even wearing swim trunks.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh. It does appear that Miyu is having fun, and I can’t begrudge her any kind of happiness she wishes. And for all I know, she may be good friends with the TUBE fellows, which means they can’t be all bad.

That said, would it have been too much to just have her do one or two lines on her own? Why take a star such as her and just stick her in the background like this?

Even better, strap a guitar on her and let her play some!

Well, beggars can’t be choosers. I’ll take what I can get, despite all my grousing for more.

Here’s Miyu at the end of the show, waving and giving the peace sign. At least that idol reflex is still in her.

And it looks like the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be playing next week? That’s interesting.

Actually, this episode was also quite interesting, with KAT-TUN, Koda Kumi, and Rip Slyme all appearing. But none of that mattered to me – not even the Rip Slyme number – as Miyu’s return overshadowed anything else I can think of.

So please, keep your fingers crossed! Let’s all hope that the next time Miyu appears on Music Station, she’ll be able to sing, maybe play guitar, and remind us of why she became such a sweetheart to so many Jpop fans out there.

Thanks for posting this, didn’t know she’s involved in this new group. I did a a little search on her recent activities, and apparently she’s involved in this group called “Nagisa no All Stars“. Not too sure what it’s all about, but the other girl in the group is Rina Aiuchi. 🙂

I think Miyu looks way thinner and much more mature now compared to the time when she’s still in ZONE, I guess that’s because I’m too used to her ZONE image. Well, wish her all the best and hopefully we can see other ZONE members like Tomoka, Takayo to get involved with music again. I remember spellcheck told me Mizuho is the reason for ZONE’s disbandment as she wanted to leave the band so I don’t think she’ll be back anytime soon.

Is it me or does she look a lot like Nakazawa Yuko in some of those caps?

Anyway, it’s a good sign. Hopefully she’ll actually be able to rock in the near future. And do a bikini photobook.

Rina Aiuchi! Aieeeee! And Chuck’s right–she looks a LOT like Yuuko, just younger.

Anyway, because I never listened to ZONE this comment is of little use, but I DID want to thank you for linking me under your list of jpop blogs. It was a great surprise when I was scrolling down to find something to read and saw my own little blog linked. 🙂

Its me again….just watched that video…..why never interview miyu? That guy was snatching all the time for miyu to speak…miyu should be the limelight …. sad.

You are right…..miyu wasnt given a chance to have a few lines of her own…i guess it was hard for you to get that few pics of miyu alone (it was so rare)…that guy was an eyesore….Anyway…just wanna express my dissatisfaction to that stupid looking guy.
