W Release Dates Cancelled / Blog Roundup Special

Filed in Cult Of Pop 2.0

This from the Hello! Project site (thanks to the wife for translation): all of W’s releases for March have been cancelled with no new date set. This doesn’t exactly come as a surprise but is certainly a disappointment. I was hoping that the punishment would be short enough that the single would come out on time, but – considering what happened with Nacci – that was unrealistic to expect.

The cancellation of releases makes me think this is getting serious. I’d hate to see Aibon leave H!P, of course, but now I’m concerned about Tsuji more. Her career is on hold due to something her partner did – Kago must feel guilt for this, and maybe this’ll set her on the right path. It’ll be interesting to watch Tsuji’s appearances during Kago’s suspension, if she’ll act like nothing happened or say something about it.

This is the dark side of being a duo, I guess – like what Andrew Ridgeley must have felt when he heard about George Michael soliciting men in public bathrooms. (Except, like, Wham! broke up a long time before that happened and I suspect Andrew knew about George in the first place.)

Not at all surprisingly, a whole lot of folks weighed in on this in our little corner of the Jpop blogosphere. I already cited ikimasshoi, which has the news, and Idolizing St. Anna who mentions a TV appearance the same day this happened as well as provides updates. Wapiko of Musings of a Fangirl expresses her shock at Aibon smoking, while Akiramike of HamsapSukebe has questions from a smoker’s perspective. Tsuji Eriku of Your Opinion Doesn’t Count is surprised by the news, as is Furusato Chronicles, which reprints the Mainichi Daily News piece and considers Ai’s career. Stuck in a Pagoda with Motoko Aoyama has an open letter to Aibon and includes a cute picture in its coverage.

Outside of the usual Jpop blogosphere, a blog called To the People gets the initial fact right but the particulars wrong, while Foreign Dispatches provides a very thoughtful piece on the nature of the Japanese talento industry.

More developments as I hear them…

Thanks for the link/mention. Please let me know what I got wrong (Jpop is outside any area of expertise I may have) and I’ll update at my blog.

Man I’m really upset, I have been excited about new W releases ever since hearing the last single I picked up Miss Love Tantei b/w Friendship. I really really loved the new stuff. I was most worried about Tsuji being effected, I hope this is just a tactic to scare the living hell out of Kago, because I don’t want to live in a jpop world without a W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
