The Berryz 2006 Calendar: Cover

Filed in Cult Of Pop 2.0

With various things going on in my life (impending fatherhood is scary, it turns out) and a stack of unfinished freelance work (as usual), I haven’t been in much of a mood to blog for the past few days. I’ve been distracted, a little sick, and more fuzzy-headed than usual.

As it turns out, all I needed was a little inspiration to get back in the swing of things – and that inspiration was right in front of me. As I’ve discovered – and perhaps anticipated – my new Berryz Koubo calendar is a good way to get myself thinking deeply about Jpop, get myself into the mood, to become inspired with a flurry of images and impulses.

Actually, it’s just a good way to spend a few minutes going, “Mmmmm… Saki.” But for me, that qualifies as deep thinking.

So let’s start with the cover, now hanging on a door. The image above, by the way, is taken from Kakko-ii, which has all the Berryz calendar images available.

The thing that strikes me most about the cover image is that Yurina looks incredible. She looks very mature in the face, though her outfit is frilly and makes her look more childish. Second, I notice that Maasa again looks real good – I like the way she sits forward a little, the tilt of her head that makes her stand out somewhat. And I like her outfit – very casual and everyday, perfect for her. Third, I’m kind of upset that Chinami’s all the way in the back – behind the twin towers, even, so she looks even smaller. Her smile is nice but perfunctory – not the best smile she’s capable of.

Beyond that, I guess I am indeed an old man because their sandals baffle me. They’re cute but seem so… ornate. I know their cuteness extends to their very toes, but does it have to include the footwear as well? Even worse, Saki’s shoes don’t match her outfit at all. Saki’s outfit is nice, though: I like how she uses the scarf to look more mature and elegant – it kind of works. Kind of.

I’m tempted to see a pecking order in the seating arrangement. Certainly, Saki’s in the front because she’s the oldest and the captain. And as for the last three… well, yeah, they are the three bottom Berryz, and in the correct order even. Maasa has the edge on Chinami for her height, at the very least.

But it’s the three others I’m wondering about: Risako, then Momoko, then Miyabi? It’s plausible but not the vibe I’d been getting about Berryz, despite my own biases. With the attention she’s been getting, I’d have expected Miyabi in the front, right after Saki. That said, these three are the core of Berryz so in general the pecking order is indeed reflected in the seating arrangement – though the specifics could be nitpicked some.

Personally, I’d have them seated: Saki (the captain’s the captain, no matter what), Momoko, Chinami, Maasa, Risako, Yurina, Miyabi. But I’d stick Megumi and Maimi from C-Ute in front of Miyabi, as well.

Anyway, Risako looks good, but in a generically Risako way – cute and vibrant with a dash of deer-in-the-headlights. I don’t like her outfit – a bit too frilly, and that huge pink rose is just wrong. Momoko looks great, nice smile, with a nice outfit. Miyabi looks good, though I’m still not quite warmed to her… Actually, she looks better – much better – in the January / February image, but we’ll get to that later. I need to stare at that one some more.
