Today’s Goody: The Berryz 2.5 Mini Album!

Filed in Cult Of Pop 2.0

Went to Hakubundo today and got the Berryz mini-album. It wasn’t the First Print, since it didn’t come with the cardboard cover or any extras… Still, I’m very happy with the purchase. Right now any extra Berryz goodness in my life is indeed a very good thing.

Afterwards, I was walking down the street and looking at the CD when I realized: Hey, I know who’s who in this anime picture of them! From six o’clock on clockwise, it’s Risako, Miyabi, Saki, Yurina, Chinami, Maasa, and Momoko.

The weird part – for me, at least – is that this is the first time I’ve been able to do this with the manga or anime versions of a Hello! Project unit. I’ve seen the Morning Musume manga and couldn’t tell who’s who, and Minimoni’s cartoon counterparts have left me similarly flummoxed… though it didn’t help they were hamsters. But Berryz, this was easy. Easy.

I can’t tell C-Ute apart, nor the new dream, but I can figure out the anime versions of Berryz Koubo. I’d say it’s time to take a break from them… but what would be the alternative? Nothing else comes to mind.

And actually, the CD goes out of its way to make it easy to figure out the front drawing, as seen by the back cover…

And the back picture of the insert. Same order as the front.

Anyway, I like the CD a lot since it’s five singles and one new song, which sounds Christmas-y. I’d say more, but a singles collection is a singles collection.

And of course, the CD insert was a joy to look through. I have to say that Risako looks really cute with a lacrosse stick. My sister played lacrosse in high school and college – and even helped coach a college team – so I always associated the sport with females more than males. So to me that whole "carrying the stick across your back" effect looks tough without being butch.

And look at Momoko in this picture! Wow! The fitted waist was a great idea for the jacket, even if the color makes my eyes bleed. The individual school outfits of the second full album were much better than these outfits, though these are undeniably cute.

And look at Chinami’s legs! Sticks, I’m telling you! Sticks!

On a side note, as I was paying for the CD at Hakubundo, I saw a copy of Tanaka Reina’s second photobook on the counter. There was a Post-It on it that clearly indicated it was a special order, which was okay – I didn’t want to spend that much today. But it made me feel better, knowing I wasn’t the only H!P fan going to this store. Maybe if I’m more regular in my purchases, they’ll stock the major H!P DVD releases as well as the CDs (which they do a good job of). I also found myself looking at the m-flo album, saw that it had Wada Akiko’s Kouhaku song on it, and promised to buy it sometime soon.

That said, I can’t see Wada Akiko replacing Berryz as my next Jpop mania. But you never know, right? Right?

  1. Sarah says:

I’ve been a MoMusu fan for five years and I can’t tell their manga versions apart from one another. I’ve been a Berryz Koubou fan for two months and I can tell their anime versions apart. So I don’t think it has to do with overloading on Berryz, I think the artwork itself must just be more distinctive.

  2. So Berryz aren’t only getting better songs than Momusu, but also better artists…
