Odds & Ends: Asuka, Momoko, Tourism, Porn, Porn…

Filed in Cult of Pop 1.0

Don’t have any nice, long posts with extensive screencaps just yet, though I want to get started on a multi-part series this weekend. (And Ian has a nifty idea for a multi-part post that’ll prove a lot of fun, even if Japanese teenage girls aren’t involved.) I have some random thoughts to pass along, though…

Asuka should be admired. Well, that may be an overstatement. Maybe. But I have to say, I like the fact that she refuses to talk to the media at all, as Idolizing St. Anna recounts. She made her decision a long time ago about leaving Morning Musume and hopefully has made her peace with it. I’m hoping her refusal to talk to the press shows she’s accepted her decision and doesn’t want to keep reliving the past. As curious as I was to know what she’s been up to, now that I do know the very basics – and it doesn’t include a desired return to the limelight – then we should leave it at that. She’s a private citizen now and should be treated as such.

Momoko of Berrz Koubo fascinates me. I’m pretty sure I don’t like her singing, and I’m not sure if I think she’s even cute… but instead of being utterly repelled by her persona, I face an oscillating attraction / repulsion, looking forward to seeing her parts in Berryz songs and then immediately not liking it despite the anticipation. Risako is still my favorite, with Chinami second, but Momoko? I don’t know what to make of her. Such deep-down ambivalence usually leads to a strong, passionate enthusiasm – but hopefully not in this case.

My wife’s friend Harumi is visiting us for ten days, which is part of why I’ve been distracted. It’s fun to have her around because it’s like seeing Hawaii in a whole new way – or rather the old way I’d forgotten – as a tourist, wanting to do touristy things. You can check out Cult of Pop Mobile for touristy cel phone camera pictures of where I live and work; sooner or later, higher quality digicam photos will be up on my Mescallado.com homepage as well, including a nice short movie of Harumi doing some hula moves. (That is, if she’ll let me post it up.)

I love Sugarbank – the blog deals with the realities of the adult entertainment industry in both a pragmatic light and from a broader, theoretical perspective. He’s currently doing a series of thought pieces on the marketing of internet porn sites and their subscription model of business. He’s got a lively, fun style and thinks seriously about the business of porn, a great combination for people interested in this corner of pop culture.

Speaking of which…

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be a pornographer – or rather, a writer of erotic flash fiction. The Wahine Trouble site will feature a new blog called 101 Nights of Wahine Trouble – it’ll run for 101 days (ending on my 36th birthday) with a new sex-centered short story every day. Being the over-analytic type (as you all know), I also have a blog devoted to Notes on 101 Nights – tracking the creative process and seeing if there’s anything interesting (so far: not really). I don’t know if I can actually do 101 straight days of flash fiction writing, which is why I’ve set up the challenge in the first place. As for why I’ve decided to make it all erotica – well, I needed something to keep me interested that long, and sex is the best hook for me.

Cult of Pop will continue, of course. This is the main blog, the one that matters most. After all, I still have my Unified Theory of SweetS and Unified Theory of Morning Musume series to get out of my system…
