“Osaka Koi no Uta” Becomes #1

Filed in Cult of Pop 1.0

As Santos points out in his fine blog, Idolizing St.Anna, “Osaka Koi no Uta” debuted at #1 on the Oricon charts. This is great news for Morning Musume, of course – the single is very good, the PV is great, it deserves to do well. The more I listen to and watch it, the more I like it – and the fact that new members may be joining Momusu in the near future makes me hold onto it even tighter, unsure of what the future will bring.

That said, I can’t help but wonder if Mari’s sudden departure had anything to do with it, if the whiff of scandal helped encourage sales – either by the train wreck factor (morbid curiosity) or by a sudden rallying of the troops. If this causes a renewed permanent interest in Momusu – or as permanent as as you can get in Jpop – I’d be surprised. The group will not only have to follow through with more great singles, they’ll have to sustain the interest of the non-fan market somehow… Perhaps by a new, more mature image. Or by maintaining a stable line-up with a manageable number, so that people who aren’t deep into H!P will be able to know who’s who in the group instead of griping “I don’t know any of these girls. Where’s Gocchin? Where’s Nacche?”

Congratulations to Morning Musume, of course. In this case, at least, there’s no such thing as bad publicity…
