The Year’s Best Quote

Filed in Cult of Pop 1.0

My favorite line from 2004 comes from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s comic book, The Ultimates…

If you haven’t read the series and plan to, stop right here. It’s too good a moment to spoil.

Anyway…

Captain America is being beaten by a naked shapeshifting Nazi alien (of course) and is told he should surrender. Cap is enraged by this, demanding:

“Surrender? Surrender??!!”

At this point he uses his shield to split the alien in half.

“You think this letter on my head stands for France?”

It’s a line I wish I’d written, one that delights me even as I recount it, and which may be the most memorable line from a comic in recent – or even relatively long-term – memory. What else would compete with it? Alan Moore’s opening line from Watchmen about dead dog and tire tracks? Not even close.
