My thoughts on the Koharu situation

If you’ve been paying attention to the Hello!Project fandom the past few days you’re probably well aware of the Koharu situation. And to anyone who’s not I’ll briefly go over what happened.

Recently Koharu was on the radio show Youngtown. On it she expressed how she really felt while she was a member of Morning Musume. She said she only joined as a stepping stone to become a model. That she didn’t like catering to her mostly male fanbase. And that being a CamCam model is a step up from being a member of Morning Musume. All while being incredibly rude and interrupting people while they spoke, questioning how Sayumi really feels about Morning Musume, and overshadowing the real guest of the show.

I don’t really mind about Koharu joining to become a model. It’s silly to think idols join groups just to become idols. Probably, half if not more, join for other reasons such as wanting to act or dance. Over half of Morning Musume’s 9th and 10th gen didn’t join because of their love of the group. Most of the girl’s families suggested they audition. Which isn’t really that big of a deal. This is also obviously not limited to female idols. Inoo Kei literally entered Johnny’s because he saw a Johnny on TV eating delicious food and he thought if he joined he’d be able to eat delicious food too. Yabu Kota’s sister sent in his application without him knowing because she was a fan of Arashi. Kyomoto Taiga was scouted by Johnny himself after he saw a photo of him and his father. So, there are lots of idols who join for what would be considered not the “right” reasons. Koharu herself said she only joined Morning Musume because she was 12 at the time and the auditions were open to 12 year olds.

So, Koharu joining the group for another reason other than loving the group and sincerely wanting to be an idol has never been a secret. And to be honest it has never hindered my love for her one bit. Anyone out there who has been reading my blog since it’s inception knows that I am, and always have been, a gigantic Koharu fan. And if you’re a really active reader you know that Koharu was the first idol I’ve ever listened to by sheer accident. And that if it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t know, or care, that idols even existed. I would have been none the wiser and most likely would have dived deeper into Jrock and became a bigger fan of it than I was at the time. So, honestly I owe a lot to Koharu. And as silly as it seems, I’ve always held a special place in my heart because of that.

I love Koharu and I guess that love clouded things a bit for me because I never thought or considered that she left the group because she didn’t want to me a member. I never really understood why she left when she was still so young and so popular. But I guess my mind would not let me think even for a minute that she really wanted to leave. I just always thought there was some other inside reason that us fans will never know about.

But when I read this I actually felt kind of sad, and it actually kind of hurt. I felt a very slight twinge of pain in my heart. Because the personal image of Koharu I made was shattering. Idols themselves are basically delusions. There’s no disputing that. They have this pure (whatever your definition of pure is) image. And they cater exclusively to whatever fantasy you create for them. Whether it’s them being this ideal, untouchable, unattainable significant other. Or just them having this “nice person” persona.

I always saw Koharu as just this energetic and goodhearted person. Who was always happy and smiling. Someone who just seemed genuinely sweet, carefree, and a lot of fun. But reading that she is pretty much ungrateful for being a member of Morning Musume, and that she pretty much regrets her time in the group, just left a bad taste in my mouth. Not only is this disrespectful to the group itself it’s disrespectful to all the past and present members, to H!P, to Tsunku, to any girl who ever auditioned for the group and didn’t make it, and especially to the fans.

But what really hurt was when she said bad things about her fans. That she didn’t like having to cater to her mostly male fanbase and that most of the modeling jobs were for men’s magazines. It shows that she didn’t care a whole lot about her fans, and probably even found them to be gross. Even though I’m not a male fan that hurts me. It shows her fans meant almost nothing to her. As someone who supported, and continues to support her, wholeheartedly it’s quite a shock and pretty upsetting.

I mean, we’re talking about not only an idol I love pretty much the idol I love. My first idol. An idol I held higher than any other idol. An idol I literally shed tears over on numerous occasions. When her graduation was announced, during her graduation concert, reading the graduation letters, watching the graduation ceremony, and some odd performances.

I know I shouldn’t be getting this upset, but I honestly can’t help it. I know that deep down most idols feel this way. But most idols aren’t brazen enough to say it. And honestly I guess I prefered my personal Koharu delusion. Pretty much the only time H!P idols ever speak out about this sort of thing is when they make a clean break from H!P/UFP. We saw this when Goto Maki bad mouthed Tsunku after switching to Avex. Or when Kago Ai expressed how she felt like a puppet who was unable to love while she was a member of Morning Musume and H!P in her first photobook after being fired. So, this makes me think either Koharu ended her contract with them or desperately wants to. And it also shows just how good idols are at putting on their idol act or persona.

I’m sure a lot of fans would probably be happy with that. Since most people didn’t think she fit Dream Morning Musume. And honestly I always felt she was out of place in the group too. But I loved Koharu and was happy she was a part of it.

So, how do I feel about all of this and Koharu? Well, I’m writing this post days after first hearing about it, so I’ve had time to really collect my thoughts about it. But I’m just torn. I have so much love for Koharu, but at the same time I feel hurt. To me she’s not the same Koharu. I see her in a different light now. She’s the girl who doesn’t appreciate what she was given. Who doesn’t realize and appreciate that without Morning Musume she’d never have the opportunity to become a model. And that at least some of her post-Momusu modeling career fanbase only cares about her because she was in Morning Musume.

I’m sure some people maybe have some new found respect for her telling it like it is, or think that she’s gutsy, but she just came off as spoiled to me. And that’s just sad.

Arashi – Calling preview

The preview Arashi’s Calling, from their upcoming double A-side single Calling / Breathless, has been released. Calling is currently being used as the theme to Aiba’s drama Last Hope.

When I first listened to this song I instantly knew that I just did not like it. But the more I listen to it the more my dislike turns to being more on the fence about it. Mostly because of the complete disconnect the first and second part of the song has. The verse and bridge sound more like they’re suited to be a theme for an anime rather than a drama. And I just don’t really care for when Arashi does rock songs. Their more theatrical ones like Truth or Lotus are fine, but I’m just not a big fan of ones like Pikanchi or Pikanchi Double. Though, I do admit the song isn’t completely awful when it slows down during Aiba’s solos and the parts immediately after that.

The only part of the song that I actually do like is the chorus. Mostly because it doesn’t sound anything like the rest of the song, and actually doesn’t really sound like it belongs in the song for that reason. But it’s probably also because it’s really catchy and sounds everything else Arashi releases. Now, more of the same is probably boring to most people but not really me. I have a very distinct sound of songs that I like.

I would love to say let’s just look forward to Breathless being better. But since Calling is so upbeat, it’s like 90% certian that Breathless will be slow paced to kind of counter Calling.

KAT-TUN – Expose preview

About a week ago the radio rip for KAT-TUN’s upcoming single, Expose, was released.

I actually meant to make this blog post sooner, but it actually slipped my mind. So, I’m sorry about that. But there’s no reason to dwell on that now.

I am really impressed with not only this song, but KAT-TUN lately. They’ve really been stepping it up lately. These last 3 singles have been incredible and each new single is better than the last one. And this single is honestly KAT-TUN’s best single to date. I know I just said that about To The Limit, but I wasn’t expecting this single at all.

The song is just really powerful and has a a nice hard rock instrumental. It also has a nice toughness to the way that it’s song. Especially the chorus. I think they’re literally saying wake up beating. I also love really love the way that they had the very last note, it’s the best part of the entire song.

Ryosuke’s mysterious debut PV

Recently the full PV for Yamada Ryosuke’s first solo single, Mystery Virgin, was released.

When I watched this PV there are a few things I noticed: how white the PV is, how simple it is, but more importantly how much is reminds me of horror movies. Well, not so much horror movies in general, just a series of movies in particular.

I don’t know if readers know this about me but I absolutely love horror movies. I’ve been watching them as long as I can remember, and have probably seen at least 500 of them. Now when I watch this PV all I can think about are the Cube movies. If you’ve never heard of them, I don’t really blame you. They are about 15 years old and weren’t exactly extremely popular. But I used to watch them a lot. The whole premise of those movies is, you’re trapped in a giant cube with like 500 rooms that will kill you if you stay in them too long. And both of the sets of the PV remind me a lot of the Cube sets. Especially the set where he’s dancing since he’s dancing in a tiny cube.

It’s just hard to decide whether he’s trapped in Cube 2

or Cube Zero.

Besides nerding out over the fact that the PV reminds me of Cube, the PV itself is extremely simple. And there’s just too much white going on. Not only is Ryosuke dressed in essentially all white with two different outfits, both sets are completely white. I don’t know if the makers of this PV were trying to go for a crisp and clean look, or they wanted the fans to think they’re in some weird Ryosuke heaven, I don’t know. It’s just too much white to such an extent that my favorite scenes are when they flip on the sepia camera filter. Just because it gives your eyes a break from all that white and it feels like there’s a little bit of variety in this PV.

But I shouldn’t be dogging the PV so much, as it does try to have a story line. Despite having a budget of what looks like $100 they did throw in some last minute story. The PV starts out with, not only the way the entire PV should have been filmed, but also Ryosuke falling backwards. Seemingly pushed to the ground by Ryosuke’s evil hood up twin. Most like everybody who finds themself in the Cube, he wakes up not knowing exactly where he is or what’s going on. I actually thought through most of the PV that the other Ryosuke was trying to steal his identity, but that wasn’t the case. Through most of the PV Ryosuke wanders the halls aimlessly, but somehow still finds time to dance.

Rysouke also notices there’s a camera and right then the PV went into KAT-TUN’s Run For You territory. Because the looming evil Ryosuke who doesn’t seem to really do his job since he only follows Ryosuke like twice, has a whole room of video that’s constantly monitoring trapped Ryosuke. What’s with another weird kidnapping and surveillance PV from Johnny’s? What are they trying to tell us? Or is this just the dream Johnny’s dorm?

Then miraculous, for reasons that aren’t explained, Ryosuke finds a disc and just instinctively knows where to put it. Which personally I think was a mistake because it made the contrast go up by like 150%. But he’s in luck because he defeated the Red Queen Ryosuke hologram and had a very Eagle Eye moment. (Please tell me people are getting these movie references?)

As a whole, the PV is just ok. I fault it for the simplistic sets and ridiculous dance. But at the same time I give it points because it at least attempted to add a story line.

Ryosuke looks cute here.

Ryosuke’s evil twin looming over him.

Love watching idols sleep. In a non-creepy way of course.

I just can’t with this dance.

You seem unsure of where you are Ryosuke. Try hard to see if you remember anyone wearing pig masks.

Apparently Ryosuke designed this jacket himself, too bad it’s hideous.

From this angle the set looks pretty cool.

What did they hire H!P’s choreographer?

Of course you’re lost you don’t have the savant telling you which numbers are prime. (Cube reference, for no one’s benefit besides my own.)

Ok, this is kinda hot.

This is unintentionally funny.

Ryosuke, you’re face isn’t helping much.

WTF is he doing?

These are the most awkward parts of the dance. The wannabe Michael Jackson moments.

Ryosuke you look much better in sepia.

Why is smelling his jacket exactly?

He does look pretty cute when he’s pretending to be scared.

Trying too hard to be sexy Yama-chan.

I didn’t realize this was KAT-TUN’s Run For You PV.

Now it’s really the Run For You PV.

It really is.

Make sure you pick up the magic disc.

This isn’t really what I was expecting.

Oh, no more evil Ryosuke.

But it’s a good thing he defeated the Red Queen before it was too late.

SKE48 – Choco no Dorei PV preview

SKE48’s official youtube channel uploaded the short version PV to SKE48’s upcoming 11th single, Choco no Dorei. Giving us the first look at the PV.

Since I enjoy SKE48’s music more than AKB48’s I figure I should at least actively try to cover what’s going on with them more.

I’m not the biggest fan of the song, I think they’ve released much better singles. But the song isn’t completely awful. It’s a little catchy. I’m sure it will grow on me over time. But I am a huge fan of the PV already.

I love that the theme of the PV is what the girls do during their normal life as an idol. It shows dance lessons, magazine shoots, theater performances, as well as even showing wotagei. I like that it’s a peak of their normal lives, despite it all being panned and scripted for a PV. I’m sure it’s still pretty much along these lines. I also think that this PV is a nod to their steady rise in popularity. Kind of like, “Thanks for the support, and look how much hard work we put into it everyday.”

I also really love the outfits they wear during the theater performance. It’s very colorful and adorable, it reminds me just a bit of their outfits for Oki Doki.

My favorite idols

A while ago on twitter I mentioned that I wanted to do an idol ranking. But I also mentioned that I was a little unsure of how to set it up. Should I just rank every member of every group that I follow, or should I just try to put my favorites in order of least favorite to favorite? Well, I decided to not do either. Since I follow so many different idol groups ranking every single member would be such a hassle and take so long. I also couldn’t do the second option because it would be absolutely impossible to really rank the idols, since I pretty much love my favorites evenly. Instead I’m just going to name my favorite idols and why. It’s not immediately what you think of when you hear the word ranking, but it is still technically a ranking since I am listing my favorites and excluding others.

So, without further adieu I present my ranking. I just want to note, that yes I am skipping all the 48 group members. Just because I am still such a novice  and haven’t had the time to properly watch their variety shows, so I don’t think I can properly judge a favorite yet. (Wow, I sound like a broken record with this. But I seriously do not have enough time to watch their variety shows. And it’s hard to say when in the foreseeable future I will have time. :/)

Aiba Masaki:

Now, this might be surprising to readers of my blog because I never really mention Aiba all that much. Mostly due to the fact that I really only review their PVs and not like dramas or variety shows. And during PVs reviews I mainly point out who looks good in the PV. Which is mostly Nino, since I think he’s the best looking member. And honestly I’m not that attracted to Aiba. He’s not really that good looking. However, when it comes to personality, and overall just how awesome the idol is, in Arashi for me it’s all about Aiba. He is my absolute favorite Arashi member hands down, no question. I just think everything about Aiba’s personality is appealing. I just love his bright and cheerful personality, because of that I think he’s the most entertainig member. He also seems like an all-around sweet and genuine person. On an episode of Himitsu no Arashi-chan a guest said something like, “You can always trust, or see how good a person is, if they like animals.” That’s pretty much how I feel about Aiba.

Suzuki Airi:

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned my love of Airi either. This is why I needed to write this post. I’ve always had a pretty strong attachment to Airi because of Buono. I’ve been a fan of Buono since they formed. But the reason that I love Airi is because she’s absolutely adorable and completely charming. Airi is just so entertaining to watch she’s fun and dorky, but more importantly she’s hilarious. She constantly makes me laugh with her puns. Everyone used to think it was both Airi in Yuuka who were like the pun queens, but to be honest there was never really any competition for me. There’s just a quality about Airi that makes me want to run up to her and hug her.

Tanaka Koki:

When I first became aware that KAT-TUN existed I did not get the appeal of Koki. I didn’t think his whole image and rapping fit in with KAT-TUN’s sorta rockish sound. And I didn’t really think he was that easy on the eyes. But that all changed when I watched Cartoon KAT-TUN. I saw Koki’s true personality and I loved it. He was funny and charming. I noticed him the most during Cartoon KAT-TUN. And he was always pretty blunt, and always said exactly what was on his mind, but more in a joking way than a mean way. I do think Koki is pretty cute now. But that’s due to good hair mixed with liking his personality so much it formed a physical attraction. Am I the only one who does that?

Suzuki Kanon:

My beloved Zukki, what can I really say about her? She’s an idol I was drawn to immediately. After her bright smile and comedy sketch at the auditions I wanted her to join so badly. And of course she did. Zukki hasn’t really bored me yet. With her signature bug imitations and her funny personality I’m completely captivated by Zukki. I love that everything she does is done with her bright smile. She’s just so adorable and still seems so innocent. I mean, she still carries around her stuffed bear Cha-chan. She’s just fun personified.

Nishikido Ryo:

I’ve already said in detail how I feel about Ryo-chan in my 30 day idol challenge day 1 post. So, I’ll just very briefly again go over why I like him. I like Ryo for his slightly aggressive, “I’m so cool” persona. I think he’s hilarious and I love all his signature poison tongue jabs. I also like that he also shows his insecure and embarrassed side from time to time as well. I just find everything about Ryo appealing.

Nakanishi Kana:

Kana was one of those girls that I did not want to join the group, but once she did join it all made sense. The reason I love Kana is because she’s another funny girl like Zukki. With her gorilla loving attitude. To me she also seems to be a little KY. She seems to goof off whenever even if it’s not the right time for it, or other people are annoyed be it. She just seems to be so loud and fun. And I like that she tries to make her charm point that she’s the only H!P member from Osaka, but I honestly haven’t seen her mention that much since a little after she joined.

Momota Kanako:

Now, I do admit that I don’t know all that much about Kanako since the lack of Momoclo subs. But the little I do know about her I love. My favorite used to be Momoka, I do still like her but after watching some clips I was more drawn to Kanako. Kanako seems to be so happy-go-lucky and bursting with energy, which I love. I also love her signature high jumps. And her overall gymnastic skills are pretty impressive. I don’t really get why Reni is the electrifying one, I can totally see that suiting Kanako more.

Tamamori Yuta:

Tama is another member that I don’t know everything about. Mostly because I just became a fan when they debuted in 2011. And I’m honestly still on the fence about them, some of their songs are great, but some are awful. What I like about Tama is no matter what he’s doing he seems to overreact more than he needs to. Whether that’s just the way he is or not, it’s still pretty hilarious. He’s just got this sort of endearing charm about him. Where he just seems so sweet and sorta naive, and dorky, and weird that you just want to hug him. That’s exactly how Kamei Eri was, and is probably the main reason I like him so much. He also seems to be a little wimpy which I find appealing. Yeah, I said it, don’t judge me.

Mori Shiori:

Passpo is one of those groups that I love, but has nothing, besides a few songs, translated into English. It is so hard to try to like an idol you know nothing about. So, everything I like about Shiori is based on the impression I get from her. Of course what drew me to Shiori instantly was her bright smile. But what I like about Shiori is that she just exudes happiness and energy. Whenever I see her in PVs or concerts she’s just like a bouncing ball of positive energy.

Masuda Takahisa:

When Ryo left NEWS I had to find a new favorite member, and I was sure if would be KoyaShige. But pretty unexpectedly I realized I was paying more attention to Massu, but at the same time it made sense. When Ryo was a member I didn’t really pay attention to Massu because their personalities were on such opposite sides of the spectrum that Massu always seemed kinda immature in compassion. But Massu’s fun loving spirit and childish nature is what I love about idols. Which is why slowly over the years I did start to pay more attention to Massu. Massu really is adorable, and cuteness has been his main image for years. Well, that and being gluttonous. He’s almost like Ogawa Saki in male form.

Tokunaga Chinami:

I’ve said on my blog before that the reason I love Chinami so much is because she reminds me a lot of myself. (Well if you took Chinami’s energetic side, Zukki’s funny side, Airi’s bad puns, and Sayu’s bluntness you’d get pretty close to my personality.) I love Chinami because of how energetic, upbeat, and generally happy she is. It’s just such an infectious and lovable quality. Chinami is also a girl after my own heart as she loves to sleep as much as I do.

Nakajima Yuto:

Yuto has been my favorite Hey! Say! JUMP member since I became a fan. There’s just something I’ve always liked about Yuto. What really draws me to Yuto is how energetic Yuto is. He’s always bursting with energy and acting over the top. Ryosuke even said that backstage out of nowhere he’ll be yelling even if he’s by himself. Yuto also just seems so easy going and carefree. Which is what I really like about him. Yuto is also very dorky and quirky. And he’s never never cared about basically make a fool of himself. He just seems so innocent and genuine to me. He’s also an all around nice guy and is good friends with most of JUMP.

Fukuda Kanon:

You know I couldn’t forget my beloved Kanyon. I have been a fan of her since I first layed eyes on her in Shugo Chara Egg. I’ve gotten this cute little sister vibe from her. And I actually do like Kanon’s personality. Shockingly I have nothing against playing the whole “I’m the cutest ever” idol persona. It’s just to me Sayu’s seems less of an act and more real at times, and she’s said a few things that as a fellow female I was pretty annoyed by. I do like that when Kanon gets into her whole Cinderella/cute idol character her whole demeanor changes. She gets a lot more dramatic, and she even changes the way she speaks. Which is pretty funny. Which in a way is poking fun at her whole character completely. Or at least that’s how I take it.

Okamoto Keito:

Back when I first got into HSJ I did not see the appeal of Keito at all. He was the guy that was just there, and I always thought he was a little weird looking. But over the years I started to see Keito’s appeal. And pretty much the entire reason I love Keito is because he’s the most awkward idol ever. He seriously is, a lot of times he just sits there and doesn’t say anything. It seems like he’s never sure exactly what he’s supposed to be doing. Most of the time they just use him to be the guy that says things in English. He’s so socially awkward that he once said he’s not comfortable talking when there’s a large group of people around. He’s also fallen down while filming things like 3 times before. His awkwardness just makes him adorable and endearing.

And there you have it my favorite idols. I do want to point out these aren’t all of the idols that I love. I obviously love WAY more idols than this. I just didn’t include my favorite graduated idols or my number 2 idols because I didn’t want this post to be a mile long. I tried to rank just my number 1 idols from each group. Some groups like, S/mileage and Hey! Say! JUMP, have 2 idols, and that’s because those idols are tied for first place. I absolutely could not pick just one for those groups. All of the other groups have a clear number 1. If people honestly care about my my favorite graduated idols or my number 2 idols, I am make another one of these ranking posts sometime in the future.

SUPER GiRLS new PV isn’t cause for celebration

SUPER GiRLS will be releasing their 3rd album Celebration February 20th. And true to form a few days ago they released a PV for the title track.

I have to say, I am just really disappointed with this PV. It’s really a strange feeling. So far I’ve never not liking anything that SUPER GiRLS released. I usually cannot get enough of them. But this time both the song and PV are equally bland.

And that’s probably because they are trying for a more mature look and sound with this song. Which is fine, I actually kind of expected it since Akai Jounetsu had a more mature feel. But what was so great about Akai Jounetsu that it was mature while still remaining catchy. It was a touch more serious from their previous singles, but it still retained some of the fun and energetic SUPER GiRLS spirit. However, Celebration is a complete 180 from their usual sound, and honestly I was caught off guard. I wasn’t expecting something like this from them at all. The song sound just so boring and forgetful. It completely lacks personality.

The PV seems to focus mostly on dancing, which right there makes it boring. But not only is it just dancing they are dancing on a giant block, which is something that’s been done a few times in idol PVs before. For instance: Berryz Koubou’s Piriri to Yukou or AAA’s No Cry No More. But the fact that they are not only dancing on a giant square and wearing all white outfits, immediately makes me think of C-ute’s Everyday Zekkouchou. It’s just been done before and therefore feels very stale to me. However, they do make up for it a bit by being styled beautifully. Per usual, the girls look gorgeous. But not only that they look super mature. I mean, Hikaru cut her hair and I almost couldn’t even recognize her. And Ami, look at Ami! She’s seriously grown so much.

I also don’t really like the close-up shots so much. First off, they are just a red curtain. How boring. It’s uncreative backdrops like that I expect from H!P, not SUPER GiRLS. And Secondly, where are the adorable close-ups with 2-3 girls. You know where they do the same posing in unison. They’ve done those in pretty much every PV. It’s little things like that that make SUPER GiRLS unique.

The only parts of the PV I did enjoy are the present wrapping scenes. I think it’s cute that they’re playing off the title. It’s in these scenes you see the girls acting more natural and just adorable. Sadly these scenes only make up about 50 seconds of the PV. And when the video is nearly 6 minutes long, that’s nowhere near long enough.

These presents are actually wrapped beautifully. XD

Whoa what kind of filter are they using, cause that grass looks yellow.

Just wow Ami.

These outfits are really pretty.

Adorable Rino.

Aya has some really nice legs.

Hikaru, you look like a completely different person.

Saori looks really fresh and pretty here.

Rina looks so mature!

Ami just continues to always look flawless.

Rikataso looks super cute.

So so cute.

I love that they’re continuing the tradition of Mirei wearing some sort of hat.

Still think that Reira is one of prettiest members.

Kaede is judging Rino so hard.

Too cute for words.

This dance is a little too simple.

Ami needs to stop being so perfect.

And now they’re playing piano for no reason.

Look at Ruka being all gorgeous by herself.

What? XD

Such cute scenes in this PV.

Lolz at Mirei pouting.

I absolutely love that it turned into a giant present. Such a cool effect.

Kisumai fail to shake things up

And just like that I’m back to blogging. So, hopefully my dear readers have really missed my blogging. I certainty hope they missed my PV reviews because since I missed so many PVs last year, I’m going to be reviewing the ones that either my readers wanted to see or my personal favorites that I missed.

And without further ado, onto the PV review.

Shake It Up by Kisumai may seem like an odd first choice, and it is. But a few months ago on twitter one of my followers, and obviously blog readers, asked me when I was going to review this PV. And I told them as soon as the full PV was released. Little did I know that never actually happened. I actually kinda feel bad for not living up to my word on that, so this PV became top priority.

Can I just start out by saying I am absolutely sick of this song? When I first heard it as the theme for the Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou drama I really loved the song. And when Bakaleya6 and Takaki performed it for the first time I thought that was perfect. But since then it’s become Bakaleya6’s basically theme song and they’ve performed it maybe 6 or 7 different times. And because I’m such a Kyomoto Taiga fan, I’ve probably watched them perform it like 30 times. Too much of a good thing, and now I’m sick of it.

As for the PV, I can’t say I’m a fan of it either. The PV has a club theme, which makes sense considering it’s a dance song. But that premise feels completely flat to me. Maybe because 70% of America videos have been filmed in night clubs over past 4 years or so. But it’s mostly because if you’ve seen one club video, you’ve seen them all. There’s not really much you can do with a club setting. You either go with Yamapi’s One in a Million PV where you fall in love in a club (cue Usher song here) or you go with Kisumai’s format for this PV which is nothing but dancing.

And honestly that’s completely stale, I’m over that. But not only that, if you’re going to make the PV focus heavily on dancing you should make sure the choreography isn’t awful. The choreography for Shake It Up is so simple that it borders on ridiculous. They’re basically swinging and shaking their hands the entire time. And sometimes lifting their leg. It looks like dancing I’d do in a club, not something idols trained in dancing would do. But hey, I can’t really complain they managed to lose the roller skates for at least one PV. That’s pretty much all I can ask from Kisumai.

I do have to give Kisumai half a point because they do attempt to shake things up (see what I did there?) and add some variety to the PV. Which would have worked if those elements weren’t borrowed from other PVs. First off, the the self filming/ panning of one person shot. I obiviously don’t make music videos for a living and have no idea what the correct term for that is, but if you’ve seen the PV you know what I’m referring to. It immediately makes me think of Yamapi’s Hadakanbo PV. But since I explained in my review of that PV how the entire PV was a complete rip off of Mike Posner’s Cooler Than Me video, it’s kinda become panning-seption now.

The other more obvious borrowed element is the brown chair. Now, if you’ve seen the PV for Face Down by Arashi you’ll remember that 90% of the PV focused on Arashi sitting in big brown chairs. While Kisumai do move more around in it than Arashi did, it’s still something I’ve seen before and therefore boring.

While I’m on the subject of copying PVs, this whole PV makes me think of Daikoku Danji’s Love Parade PV. I don’t know if my readers of this blog are familiar with this group, but Daikoku Danji are a Kpop crossover group which I do adore because of how, besides B1A4, they are the only male Kpop group who’s songs and PVs really sound and look like a male Jpop group. Most of the male crossover groups just look and sound like Kpop in Japanese. I might actually review their past PVs for fun sometime in the future. But I digress.

The Love Parade PV is hardly similar to this PV, so don’t start yelling at me that the PVs are completely different. It’s just the overall feel that is the same. Both groups are styled very similarly, both groups have a club setting, both groups even hold up the word love. Of course Kisumai has a club full of people while Daikoku Danji are alone. And a handful of other differences. I don’t know there’s just something about the Love Parade PV that immediately makes me think of this one.

I also don’t really like the outfits. There as flamboyant and almost embarrassing as most male idol outfits are. But there’s something about them that are almost cringe worthly. Maybe it’s Taisuke’s woman’s jacket, Tama’s puked up a nebula scarf, or Hiro’s wannabeee (I’ll stop with the puns soon, I swear) punk rock jacket. It might even be Yoko’s what-were-they-thinking pants, I don’t know. But whatever it is, at the very least these outfits deserve a silent head shake in disapproval.

Starting off with a Taisuke wink isn’t too shabby.

All the movements in this PV are way too intense. They really need to tone it down a bit.

I think my favorite parts of Kisumai PVs is how they continue to not make it too obvious who the popular members are.

Unoriginal brown hair. And let me just say I doubt Hiro even knows who Slayer is let alone listen to them. Lol.

Reminds me so much of Arashi’s face down PV.

I really like Taisuke’s jacket. But in the sense that it would probably look better on me.

It also really reminds me of the jacket Hyunseung wore in the Troublemaker video.

This dance. It’s just so simple.

Like ridiculously simple.

Taisuke is trying way too hard in this PV.

I almost can’t believe some of these dance moves.

That duck face.

Yup, definitely trying too hard.

Is that a dinosaur on his shirt? Also, self panning shots are unoriginal.

Reminds me too much of Yamapi’s Hadakanbo PV.

The faces in this PV man.

Like seriously.

Poor Miyata, if he wasn’t in the drama he probably would have never gotten a line in the song.

I’m a sucker for idol winks.

What is Yoko doing? Lol.

Still think this dance is pretty ridiculous.

Family portrait. (Get it? Rocky Horror reference. XD )

Too intense man.

Through it all Tama still manages to look cute.

Ok then.

It’s backwards there Hiro.

Still reminds me of this.

Hiro’s face. Lol.

Kis-My-Ft2 – My Resistance Tashikana Mono preview

The full radio rip for Kisumai’s My Resistance Tashikana Mono off their upcoming double A-side new single, My Resistance Tashikana Mono / Unmei Girl, was just released. My Resistance will be used as the theme for Tamamori Yuta’s new drama Nobunaga no Chef.

When the song first started I knew I wasn’t going to like it very much. And, honestly, I’m still on the fence about the song. The song starts off with very soft piano music and accompanied with equally sad background music. The entire song sounds very emotional and sad. It’s times like this I wish I understood Japanese.

What I do find odd about this song is that Taisuke seems to be rapping through most of it. Not only does it not really fit with the sad music, you’d figure there would be a much bigger Yuta part in the song since it’s for his drama. I mean a good chunk of the song is Yuta. I mean, come on this is unfair Kisumai of course he’s prominent in the song. I was just expecting Yuta to sing 3/4 of the song.

Midway through the song the whole tempo and feel changes. Which is why I can’t really decide exactly how I feel about the song yet. The music becomes very upbeat and it sounds like the message changes from sad to positive, and maybe even inspiring. I don’t know, I feel like I really have to wait for a translation because this seems like one of those songs that will have great lyrics.

Anyway here’s the preview. My Resistance Tashikana Mono / Unmei Girl will be released on February 13th.

Tasaki Asahi’s debut makes me want to write her off already

It was recently announced that the winner of Up Front’s recent audition, Tasaki Asahi, was going to be making her solo debut under the Satoyama Movement. The PV for Tegami off her double A-side single, Tegami/Rolling Days, has been released.

I actually had no intention of covering this idol on my blog, but
Chii suggested I review the PV and here we are.

Let me start off by saying I do not like the song at all. I think Asahi has an amazing voice, but the song is so soft and slow paced that’s it’s completely bland. And it’s sad because Asahi has an amazing voice that’s somewhat being wasted on this song. This song literally sounds like something ManoEri would have released in the beginning of her career. And we all know how I’ve always felt about ManoEri’s early stuff. It took me years to slowly start to like it. And it doesn’t really help that this girl plays the piano too. I know that Erina is leaving pretty soon, but do they really need a replacement this quickly?

As for the PV, I’m afraid I don’t really have nice things to say about it either. This PV even screams old Mano PVs. Tell me this PV doesn’t look like a mix between Kono Mune no Tokimeki wo and Otome no Inori? The PV also reads like any other ManoEri PV with a heavy focus on the piano and several close-ups of her playing. The only real difference seems to be that ManoEri seemed to used a white piano or keyboard most of the time and Asahi is using a black one. Wow, so different. It doesn’t feel like I’m watching the same artist at all!

The rest of the PV is extremely somber. It’s even shot with a grungy camera filter to give an extra burst of gloom. But then sometimes in the PV she’ll be filmed in natural light and suddenly the PV is happy again. I guess she’s only sad when she’s playing the piano.

I really wish I had something more interesting to say about this PV, but literally nothing happens in it. The entire PV consists of her either playing the piano or just sitting there looking off longingly into the distance. Oh I’m sorry, I’m being mean. I can’t forget about the heartbreaking scenes where she’s drinking coffee or flipping through a book. UFP really knows how to pull at your heart strings.

Also, what I think is really funny for a song called letter she’s hardly ever seen actually writing the letter. Maybe for about all of 30-45 seconds in the PV. Since it’s most likely a love letter there’s a lot they could have done with that theme. Show her struggling to find the right words. Have her crumble up letters that aren’t good enough. Have her write in a more convincing place like her bedroom, because no one goes to an abandoned warehouse to play the piano and write a letter. I don’t know just something! Give me something more than her just sitting there.

I also don’t really get why there are 3-4 of her. It’s probably representing her inner anguish or she’s stepping back from herself to look and asses all of her emotions. I don’t really know. To be honest I never really try to look for deeper meanings behind videos. But the personas did seem to disappear whenever she was sad. Or appear when she was writing the letter. So, I suppose all those times she was looking off into the distance she was actually thinking about her emotions or memories. That’s about as philosophical about it as I’m gonna get about it.

I don’t think the “deep meaning” behind the PV is clear enough. The way they tell the story is extremely weak. If you can’t immediately tell that there’s a story going on there, then honestly that’s a definite minus for me. The PV is so cheaply made that I feel absolutely no attachment to the underlined “message” it’s trying to convey.

Oh, piano playing. I’m bored already.

Nice shoes.

What a sad setting.

Or not. You blink and suddenly the camera filter changes.

Wait, is she a ghost? Or is this an outer body experience? Is that supposed to show her inner self examining herself? Just why are there 2 of them now?

I do have to admit Asahi is really pretty.

Cute smile.

Yeah, you write that letter.

She’s stares of into space a lot. I guess maybe she’s supposed to be thinking or something. I don’t know.

Ok, now there’s 3 of them.

Doesn’t she know she’s too late to be in Kikka’s PV?

What are you reading there?

Maybe ManoEri will know?

It looks like she just tried to turn to someone and say something. But she’s alone. Maybe she was hoping to get one of her other personas.

Now they’re just messing with me.

Of course you’re cold, you’re sitting in an abandoned warehouse.

Hey, the song is called tegami not shashin.

Not sure why it’s necessary to have a close-up of her neck, but I’ll just go with it.

Why so sad? Is it because your clones blinked out of existence?

Oh, I spoke too soon.

At least they’re really focusing on the letter now.

But this is literally all I thought of.

“That was hilarious, I should tell someone.”

“Lol nope. I’m alone.”

Infectious smile.

Literally the most interesting pare of the entire PV.

Why is she playing so intensely, this isn’t Phantom of the Opera.

Recent thoughts about Johnny’s

In my opinion one of the most fun things to do when you’re an idol is to overanalyze and speculate about every detail of idols. Since my over-analyzations /predictions usually turn out to accurate it fuels the fire and makes me want to overanalyze things even more. Sure, there have been a few times I actually wish I wasn’t right. Like when I said Yamapi leaving wouldn’t be the end of NEWS, or when I said something wasn’t right with Arihara Kanna missing so many C-ute activities she had to be leaving soon. But just the same, it’s still fun to try to figure what’s going on, or to just think about what you wish would happen.

Lately I’ve been really thinking about things going on with Johnny’s. They were seemingly small little thoughts that I’ve just tweeted or posted on tumblr. Nothing really major. But writing my yearly ranking posts really sparked some new ideas that I wanted to talk about. None of them are big enough to get their own blog post alone, so I’m going to compile them together in one post.

1. The curious case of Nakayama Yuma:

It seems they never really knew what to do with Yuma from day 1. Nakayama Yuma was the most popular Kansai Junior, one of the most popular Juniors overall, and one of the most talented Juniors at singing. So, it was pretty obvious to the people that pulls the strings at Johnny’s that they didn’t want to waste him and could make money off of him. But it seems like they never had a clear image of what to do with him exactly. Which is why the whole Nakayama Yuma w/ B.I. Shadow and NYC Boys fiasco happened in the first place.

Nakayama Yuma w/ B.I. Shadow immediately says that Yuma is a solo artist and the other members are just singing with him. Kind of like Diana Ross & The Supremes. Because Yuma got all the lines and B.I. Shadow sang harmonies. So, why not just make him a solo artist to begin with? Or why didn’t they have Yuma and B.I. Shadow form a group with a new name and equal lines? If they did that I feel like Yuma would be in a better less confusing place right now. Obviously we all know that NYC dropped the Boys, shafting poor B.I. Shadow completely, and have been releasing singles since. Which is fine no big deal. Get all that gravy money from a group made up from one of the most popular Juniors and the 2 of the most popular Hey! Say! JUMP members.

But lately another confusing piece of the puzzle came into place, Yuma made his solo debut. Yuma sang the theme for his drama Piece and released the song as a single. Does this mean they are priming Yuma up to be a solo artist? They did release his solo song, Glassno Mahou, as another A-side with NYC’s Wonderful Cupid single. So, this could mean this was the plan for Yuma all along. Because right now since he’s only part of a sub-group and not an official group. He’s in the awkward situation of having nothing to do when NYC isn’t releasing anything. He’s in that Henry and Zhoumi from Super Junior M postion. (Yeah, it’s a Kpop reference, but I’m sure most of you get it.) And if he did go solo where does that leave NYC? Sure Yuma could handle being both solo and being in NYC. But I’m unsure if Ryosuke could handle it.
Which brings me to my next point,

2. Is the most popular member’s inevitable departure the new norm?:

As you’re all aware Hey! Say! JUMP member Yamada Ryosuke is making his solo debut by releasing the theme for his drama, Mystery Virgin, as a single. This makes me both very confused and worried about Hey! Say! JUMP. For the longest time if you were a Johnny’s idol in a drama or movie your group would 9/10 times sing the theme. Regardless if you were the most popular or least popular member. Mostly because Johnny’s uses their popularity and/or exposure as pretty much free extra promotion for the group they’re in. This format added countless of single sales to groups like NEWS and KAT-TUN. And helped Arashi’s popularity skyrocket.

But having 1 member of the group promote the single puts 3/4 of the attention and exposure to that individual alone. Besides the special group Shuji to Akira (and The Monsters), to my knowledge they’ve only done this once before and that was with Akanishi Jin’s Bandage single. Yes, they’ve also done this when Yamapi’s Daite Senorita was the theme for Kurosagi, but that obviously does not count since NEWS was on hiatus at the time. And if you recall when NEWS was off hiatus NEWS’s Taiyou no Namida was used as the theme for the Kurosagi movie.

But what’s the point of having Ryosuke release this solo single? Why isn’t it a Hey! Say! JUMP single? Especially since Hey! Say! JUMP released one single in 2012 all the way back in February. Sure maybe they want to gain more money since he’s the most popular member. But isn’t it enough extra money with him being in both NYC and Hey! Say! JUMP? And they would actually make more money releasing it as a Hey! Say! JUMP, or even NYC, single. Obviously mostly Ryosuke fans are going to buy a Ryosuke single. But fans of the other 8 members of Hey! Say! JUMP, or fans of the other 2 members of NYC, are going to buy the group’s single. Which would be an increase of anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 copies. So, what’s the point of him releasing a solo single? Surely this is stretching Ryosuke really thin. Being in 2 groups at once and releasing a solo single.

This is also going scarily into NEWS and Kanjani8 territory. If you’re an idol in 2 groups at once one of the groups always suffers. One group has to be more active than the other group so the idol who is in 2 groups isn’t too tired. NEWS seemed to always be on the short end of the stick. And this year Hey! Say! JUMP is. 3 NYC singles, 1 Yamada Ryosuke single announcement, (so close to being 2012) and 1 Hey! Say! JUMP single. And please don’t say, “well they were active because they released 1 single, 1 album, and 1 concert DVD.” That is not active, that’s a bad NEWS flashback. Before Ryo and Yamapi skedaddled from NEWS they released 1 single, 1 album, and 1 DVD that year. It’s so similar it’s creepy.

So, does this mean it’s simply the most popular member’s fate anymore to leave the group and go solo? Jin and Yamapi both did it. And Jin was the only one to decide on his own. Ryosuke said his solo single came as a surprise even to him, and Johnny set up Yamapi’s meeting with Warner Music while he was still in NEWS. While I don’t see Ryosuke, or even Chinen for that matter, leaving anytime soon I do still think it’s in the cards. Because don’t forget Ryo was a member of 2 groups for 7 years before he threw in the towel. Chinen and Ryosuke have only been doing it for 3 years. And it is slightly easier on them because NYC doesn’t have their own TV shows or concerts like Kanjani8 did. At least for now anyway.

3. What’s up with Bakaleya6?:

I’ve been wondering what’s up with Bakaleya6 for a while now. Bakaleya6 is obviously made up of the Johnny’s members, minus Takaki, who were in the Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou drama. It made sense to temporarily have these guys perform together on Shounen Club or appear together on variety shows while they are promoting the drama and movie. But the drama and movie came and went, but the group doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. They perform pretty much on every episode of Shounen Club, occasionally on Yan Yan JUMP, are lumped together in all the idol magazines, appear on more variety shows, half of them were in a Baskin Robins commercial, and some of the members are getting additional drama work. Drama work while you’re still a Junior is pretty rare. You either only get extremely small roles, or you have to be an extremely popular Junior to get a lead role. Bakaleya6 also has their own special performance at Hey! Say! JUMP’s Jump World concert and introduced Hey! Say! JUMP in the beginning of the concert. They even headlined their own summary concerts.

While I think all that is obviously awesome for them, I still can’t help but wonder what the plans for this group are. Bakaleya6 is made up of some of the most popular current Juniors, so it makes sense to keep them together as long as possible. But then why not have them debut, or at the very least make them an official Johnny’s Junior group? Currently none of them are in Junior groups. Juri and Jesse used to be in Hip Hop Jump before they disbanded. Taiga hasn’t been in a group since Kitty Jr, Shintaro hasn’t been in a group since he was in Snow Prince Gasshoudan, and Hokuto and Yugo were left groupless after Sexy Zone’s formation completely broke up B.I. Shadow. So, it makes perfect sense for them to make one. In idol magazines you have seen Bakaleya Gumi written under their names, but you never see anything written on Shounen Club.

I honestly don’t see why they are keeping them together unless they have something planned for them. In a perfect world that would be a major debut. Personally that’s what I’m hoping for. A lot of fans say that it’s impossible because the group is too new. And I honestly think that’s ridiculous. Just because groups like KAT-TUN and Kis-My-Ft2 were Junior groups for like 6 years before debuting doesn’t mean that’s the norm. Most of these Juniors have been members of Johnny’s since the members of Hey! Say! JUMP joined Johnny’s. And sometimes that doesn’t even matter. Tegoshi was only a Junior for something like 8 months before his debut and Marius wasn’t a Junior for that long either. (I have no idea the actual amount of time though. XD)

I actually think having the members debut as a group makes sense since they are well known and popular members. It would be a much more calculated debut than Sexy Zone. Besides Fuma and Kento the members of Sexy Zone were pretty unheard of before the group was announced.

Morning Musume – Help Me PV preview

About a week ago a PV preview for Morning Musume’s 52nd single, Help Me, aired. Help Me not only marks Momusu’s first single of the year, but also the first single to include 11th gen member Oda Sakura.

First of let me say a little bit about the song because I haven’t said anything about it on my blog yet. When I first heard the song my first impressions were that it was weird. It sounded like a mix between 3 different songs, and the random speaking in it threw me off completely. The only thing I loved about it was Sakura. I don’t even know anything about Sakura yet, but she is perfection in every way. The pipes on this girl, the pipes! I knew she was an absolutely incredible singer since I saw her audition. But her voice in this song is so flawless, so seamless, so smooth, I could literally die. This is the girl that Morning Musume desperately needed, a great singer. In my opinion we haven’t a voice this immediately flawless since Ai-chan joined. And I’m calling it now, in a few years she’s going to give Ai-chan a run for her money as the girl with the best voice in Morning Musume history.

But less about the absolute gift from above that Sakura is, and more about the song. After listening to it more and more I am now officially a fan of this song. This song is wrong and weird, and shouldn’t be great, but it is. It just works on nearly every level. The music is interesting and it’s sung great. However, I still don’t like the speaking parts. I think it’s loads better than Wakuteka Take a Chance.

Now, for my thoughts on the PV so far. In short: I do not like it at all. I might even hate it. From the first 5 seconds it’s obvious that whoever make the Wakuteka Take a Chance PV also made this one. And that person should be replaces ASAP.

Why is it yet another green screen PV? Just why? And if you are going to do a green screen PV why not make it fun like the 231 Breakin’ Out PV? And to make matters worse the cgi is done so poorly that it’s so obvious the girls are overlayed onto images.

And to me the entire PV looks like an anime ending theme video. You know at the end of animes where the ending theme is just the character in random parts of Tokyo like on a train, at school, and then randomly at Tokyo at night. And the night sequences are all overly colorful and brightly lit? Well, that’s exactly what this looks like to me.

I suppose I can’t 100% judge this PV until we see the entire thing. But come on guys, you know it’s probably not gonna get better than this.

Johnny’s Countdown 2012-2013

Well, I want to start off by saying Happy New Year my dear readers! And nothing brings in the New Year quite like the Johnny’s Countdown. As I’ve said before the Johnny’s Countdown is one of, if not the, most exciting part of being a Johnny’s fan. It’s seriously a highlight of my year. Most idol agencies usually have their idols come together frequently. They have jointed concerts, have TV shows together, or at least perform together on TV. But Johnny’s only ever comes together once a year. (Obviously excluding charity events.) And the Countdown holds a special place because if it wasn’t for the Countdown I’d probably still only be a NEWS fan right now.

I actually always wanted to makes these overview posts of the Countdown to be a yearly tradition on my blog, but last year I was unable to find a decent quality of the concert. I had some trouble this year as well. I almost had to 86 this entire post. But I luckily I found one, and here we are.

It seems like KinKi Kids are hosting again. Which doesn’t really bother me. I just wish Arashi wasn’t stretched too thin with Kohaku and could host it again.

I should really go back and listen to some of Matchy’s songs. He has a really good voice.

It’s weird to see Tackey & Tsubasa together. How come Tackey isn’t in the theater again this year?

Adorable Koki.

I hate that Hey! Say! JUMP are wearing their Boku wa Vampire outfits. I’ve never really care for them.

Why are they having Uchi stand next to Yamapi as if he’s a soloist too? I only point this out because, remember how everyone knew that Kis-My-Ft2 was going tomake their major debut because of how much they were being treated like a legit group instead of just Juniors? I wonder if this means a solo debut is in the cards? He has been doing his thing with Question for a while. And said he would love to debut again with them.

It just wouldn’t feel like a Johnny’s if the outfits weren’t so hideous so, over designed, and so brimming with blinding sequins that you wanted to punch the costume designer on the face.

I’m happy. Venus is probably my favorite Tackey & Tsubasa single.

That awkward moment when Tackey & Tusbasa are making your song more entertaining just by dancing then by you singing. Sorry Yamapi.

Can this even count as a debut? Since A.B.C-Z released this and nothing else since.

It’s cool that they had JUMP Band, but because of that you literally didn’t see any of the band members besides Keito.

Sexy Zone’s performance was hilarious. It was like, “Enjoy Sexy Zone, but please overlook the fact that only 1/5 of them is old enough to actually perform tonight.”

I really like KAT-TUN’s jackets. They have the least embarrassing outfits in the entire concert.

Wow, Taguchi looks really good here.

Happy New Year!

Keito looking good.

I love how they brought out all the rappers for this song. But Koki easily blows them away. I always thought Hikaru and Taisuke were kinda bad at rapping.

I haven’t seen Yuto tap in a while.

People said Arashi’s segment is prerecorded this year. Doesn’t really bother me. On a side not, I’m officially used to Nino’s hair.

Lolz at Nino’s face.

Yabu is such a cutie.

Really wish I could see the Juniors better. I can clearly see that Kochi Yugo, Sanada Yuma, and Yasui Kentaro are there but that’s it. I just want to know if my beloved Taiga is there.

Wow, this is really awesome.

Fumikyun managing to stand out.

Wow, I have no idea who any of the Kansai Juniors are.

Yes! They’re performing Aoppana. I was actually upset they didn’t perform it at Kohaku.

I’m so Ryo-chan deprived lately. I really need to get into Kanjani8 more.

Ryo literally almost fell here.

Rysouke looking as gorgeous as ever.

Tegoshi looks girly enough already, does he really need to keep doing his hair this way?

I’ve never heard V6’s Rock Your Soul before, but it’s seriously a great song.

Here’s the first part of the concert. This person does have the entire concert. But I didn’t want to put 10 videos on the bottom of this post. I suggest you watch it quickly before it gets take down.

Best Album Songs of 2012

Going right along with my ranking extravaganza is the final installment: Best Album Songs of 2012.

This was yet another extremely difficult think to rank. Not quite as hard as ranking singles, but definitely a close second. I think there were a lot of great albums released this year. Like really great albums.I would even label 4 or 5 of them as perfect albums.
Yet again all my favorite idol groups released an album. I shouldn’t say yet again as most idol groups release an album a year. But whatever.

Oh also, I really wanted to include the solos from NEWS’ best album. But I didn’t because even though that album was released this year the songs are years old. You know if I could have included them Shige’s Shalala Tambourine would have been really close to the top of the list.

Well, I won’t prelong this anymore. Here we go!

10. Mano Erina – Glory Days

I think every H!P fan was in love with this song when they randomly uploaded it to ManoEri’s youtube page. I know I was, I literally could not get enough of this song since then. I was super impressed by this entire album. It really was ManoEri’s best album. Lately her music was just flawless. Which really adds salt to her still fresh graduation wounds. I literally do not want her to leave now. It’s funny how just 2 or 3 years ago, I would have laughed at her leaving. This song is really incredible. The music is very intense and the slight effects they do on her voice fit it perfectly and add a nice element to the song. ManoEri sounds just perfect in this song. It doesn’t sound like she’s forcing her voice out.

9. KAT-TUN – One Day

In the past I never really gave KAT-TUN’s albums much of a chance because I personally thought they were terrible. But they’ve really picked it up over the past few years. And anymore I go out of my way to listen to their albums. And this album was just incredible, in my opinion it’s their best album to date. I of course love the dance feel of the music, but it has this interesting sound where it’s like a mix between dance and rock music. My absolute favorite part of the song is the chorus, it’s just so powerful and catchy.

8. C-ute – Kagayake! Houkago

If you would have told me last year that a Nacky solo would make it onto my list I wouldn’t believe you. Mostly because I don’t really care for her voice so much, she has one of the weaker voices in C-ute. But I’ve been absolutely in love with this song since I first heard it. And seeing her perform it when they live streamed C-ute’s concert, just really confirmed my love for it. It’s just such a happy and fun song. And one of those songs that are so upbeat that really forget about everything for a minute and are completely lost in the song.

7. Hey! Say! JUMP – Thumb & Pinky

This song came so close to be beaten out by Hurry Up. I’ve been addicted to, and have been listening to, Hurry Up practically nonstop for months. But I’ve been doing the same with this song. But when it came to the best song on the album it became obvious that I had to pick this one. It’s another song that was written by Hikaru, and you can immediately tell because it’s arranged extremely similarly to Ai Scream. But that’s what I love about this song. All of the background calls and sound effects are a big part of what makes this song so fun and catchy. I especially love Daiki’s random yell. Of course I also love the energetic music and the fast paced way that the song is. I also appreciate how this is one of the only songs on the album where you actually hear everyone sing.

6. SUPER GiRLS – Zettai Jibun Zenshin Sengen

This is a song I love because it’s the same idol fare that I absolutely adore. It’s sung cutely and the music is fun and energetic. What more can you really ask for from idol music? Not only is that song amazing, but the album as a whole was. It was really difficult to pick just one song. But ultimately this song one because of it’s infectious chorus.

5. Yamashita Tomohisa – Shiver

I have to say that I am extremely late in listening to Yamapi’s album. Since I’m not a gigantic fan of his I only heard his Ero album because I watched the concert DVD. And I’m starting to think that that’s a mistake, because this album was spectacular. 100 times better than I was expecting. One of the reasons I love this song is the gritty rock feel the music and the way its sung has. The music also reminds me Puffy AmiYumi music mixed with just great rock music in general. But of course the most obvious reason for loving this song is that it’s sung completely in English. And I am actually really impressed with Yamapi’s English. I can understand it 100%, and that really is saying something. Because despite being in America for months Jin’s English is still hard to understand. Remind me again why Jin is trying to break into the US and not Yamapi? Because this seriously blows any of Jin’s English song way out of the water. Besides it being English the song is extremely catchy in its own right. I immediately rewatched this performances about 4 or 5 times.

4. Morning Musume – Dokka~n Capriccio

What immediately drew me to this song is that is has the same spirit and sounds as their 12th album. This song is very similar to Ok Yeah. And that’s exactly what I love about it. It’s got that wonderful and really powerful dance music. The song is so intense and catchy that’s it’s impossible to not like it. The song leaves and incredibly deep impression and it really demands attention. Especially when the music booms after they say dokkan. I really love this song. It’s one of those songs that I could listen to for hours without getting bored.

3. AKB48 – Iede no Yoru

What I love about this song is that it sounds very powerful while still having that unique AKB48 sound. The song as a whole is very passionate and very inspiring actually. And it has a real roughness to it that you don’t immediately expect from AKB48. Well, from their singles anyway.I really love that the song is about leaving home even though they have no where to go, just to be free. I’m just really drawn to those lyrics. They’re amazing in my opinion.

2. Passpo – Dear My Friends

This is just a perfect song in my opinion. Passpo is one of those idol groups that very rarely disappoint. And when you listen to the One World album you’ll hear just how strong of a group they are. It was so hard to narrow it down to just one song. But I ultimately picked it because of how at the same time it was both intense but still fun. Which isn’t really an easy thing to do, but Passpo pulls it off with such seamless ease. This song is just so powerful that it’s beautiful. It really is just a beautiful song. And my girl Shiori sounds absolutely incredible in this song. It just seems so effortless and natural. When I listen to Passpo’s songs, especially their album songs, I’m just reminded of how much of a travesty it is that they sell so low.

1. Arashi – Welcome to Our Party

This song, OMG this song! You cannot imagine how hard it is to put into words how much I love this song. I love absolutely everything about this song. It is absolutely perfect in every single way. No, seriously it is. Can I just start by saying Popcorn was an absolutely amazing album. It was one of their best albums to date. It just has that fun-loving old school Arashi feel. This song is everything great about Arashi rolled into one. What I really love about this song is it has a very Attack It feel. In the sense that all the members are rapping just like in Attack It. And I’m not sure if my readers know this, but Attack It is one of my absolute favorite Arashi songs. What else is great about this song is how energetic and fun this song is. I mean, this song literally grabs you by your shoulders, shakes you, and demands that you party. I implore anyone who is not an Arashi fan to listen to this song, you will not regret it. This song is just so addicting and catchy from basically the first note.

Honorable Mentions:
1. Morning Musume – What’s Up? Ai wa Dou na no yo

19.AKB48 – Hashire! Penguin

Worst Singles of 2012

Continuing with my yearly ranking extravaganza we’ll find out the same thing we find out most years, Aim doesn’t like slow songs. But on a more serious note, this was literally the hardest year to pick a top ten worst single list. Most years I have a somewhat clear idea of what singles I didn’t enjoy that much and I only have to scramble to pick the last song or two. But this year it was completely different. I only had about 3 songs this year that I knew for a fact I just didn’t care for that much. And this year I was frantically trying to think of about 7 songs to pick.

I know I say this every year that I don’t really hate any idol song, and the worst of the year list aren’t songs I hate just my least favorite songs. Well, that sentence has never been more true. This year I had to pick songs that were in the middle for me because barely any songs this year dipped lower than a 5/10 for me this year. In my opinion, this was a really spectacular year for idol music. Or maybe I was incredibly lucky and it was just a great year for the type of idol music I like. Either way, this year in music was just great, which made things a hundred times more difficult for me. If you ever get personally offended with my lists for worst songs because your favorite song is on the list, well this year you’re in luck because I don’t consider most of these songs to be deserving of the worst label. So you don’t have to say I have horrible taste in music. Well, you don’t have to think that anyway. I say think because no one has ever literally commented on my year ranking posts and said that. But I’m sure at least some of you may have been thinking it.
10. Momoiro Clover Z – Saraba, Itoshiki Kanashimi-tachi yo

This song is number 10 because I’m walking a thin line between liking this song and not liking it at all. The song itself isn’t completely awful. In fact if it was done by any other group I probably would have liked it more. But when it comes to MomoClo I expect over the top energetic and cutesy music from them. This song just feels too mature for them. Or rather it’s just not the music I personally prefer to hear from them. It’s the same reason why I never really liked Roudou Sanka. The chorus is still a little catchy and there are some cool effects done tot heir voices, but the song just isn’t for me.

9. Berryz Koubou – Be Genki Naseba Naru!

This is one of those songs I just did not like at all when I first heard it. I just thought all the nai nais were pretty annoying. And I think the bridge sounds completely awkward. The way that it slows down and turns into this weird fanciful music just sounds really out of place. The one thing I always did like about the song was the chorus.I think the chorus is fun and catchy. It’s really about the only redeeming quality of this song. Because honestly this song sounds more like 3 different songs pieced together than one complete song. And I think the lyrics are quite stupid. The entire song just lists things that you shouldn’t do or shouldn’t let happen. Like sleeping during examsor leaving your wallet in the taxi. I think those are all pretty obvious things and don’t really need a song written about them.

8. Mano Erina – Tasogare Kousaten

I’ve said it once I’ll say it again, I am not a fan of slow paced songs or ballads. I don’t know, I just need a fast paced song to hold my interest. And that’s of course what I don’t really like about this song. I’m sure it’s pretty in its own way, but I just find it boring. Which is a problem I’ve had with ManoEri since the beginning. How ironic that her music finally starts to get good an she’s graduating. For me to like a slower song the lyrics have to be really beautiful and meaningful, and I feel like this song also misses the mark. While this song does have some meaning, something about painting their future in the blue sky and always shining by the same light. But I’ve heard tons of songs like that before. It’s just not enough for me.

7. Kis-My-Ft2 – She! Her! Her!

I was never this song’s biggest fan when it first came out, and that has changed much over this past year. Especially since the other songs they released this year were a lot better than this one. There are a few reasons why I don’t like this song, the first being how annoying the random she her her chants are. First of all, they don’t match the flow of the rest of the song. And second of all, she her her doesn’t have an actual meaning. I also think that the amount of English in this song makes it sound pretty awkward. The song itself is mediocore at best and barely good enough to be an A-side.

6. AKB48 – Give Me Five

When this song first came out there was a bit of commotion about it because they were playing instruments. At least I think they were actually playing them during the lives. Whatever the case may be, I just do not like this song. I think it’s boring and it didn’t take any risks at all. It feels like one of those songs that AKB48 makes that they don’t even try with because they know whatever they produce will sell well just because of who they are. Also, it is yet another graduation song. I get that there have been a lot of Japanese graduation songs out there, (personally I think ZONE’s Sotsugyou and Buono’s Last Forever are some of my favorites.) and idols in general make a lot of gradution songs, but this is literally like the 6th graduation themed single AKB48 has released in their career. It’s boring, it’s just absolutely boring. I really don’t need to hear yet another graduation single from them. Please stick with the cheesy idol songs I love.

5. Arashi – Your Eyes

Slow idol songs bore me to no end, but no slow idol songs bore me quite like Arashi’s slow songs do. And the reason for that is anymore all of their slow songs from 2010-present day sound exactly the same and have nearly the same lyrical content. Where are Arashi’s slow songs that lyrically made up for it being so slow paced?Your Eyes is definitely no Beautiful Days were the lyrics are so heartfelt and beautiful that you could tear up listening to it. The absolute only thing this song has going for it is how the chorus sounds. The chorus is actually really great. It has like this rock sound to it and it’s completely catchy. However, once the song switches over from the chorus to the verse it loses all its appeal. The verse is sung so monotonically and the music is so simple and soft, that it literally sounds like they are speaking over light music rather than singing a song.

4. Passpo – Kimi wa Boku wo Suki ni Naru

I was completely underwhelmed by this song the very moment it came out. And unlike most of the other songs on this list, I haven’t really grown to like it. I think this is not only Passpo’s weakest singles to date, but one of their weakest songs overall. I mean, their entire indie album is better than this song. The entire song just sounds so stale. It’s way too toned down for Passpo. I expect either happy upbeat pop-rock or intense serious rock from them. Either way I expect a song that leaves a deep impression. And this song, sadly, just isn’t it. It’s not a terrible song, I feel like there could be occasions where you’re in the mood to hear this song. But for me those time are few and far. To me the song is boring and doesn’t push things far enough. They played it way too safe with this single.

3. Watanabe Mayu – Otona Jelly Beans

This song had all the elements for a great song going for it. Mayu’s adorable voice and very cutesy and fanciful music. However, there’s just something about the song that I just don’t like. To me the song is just boring and doesn’t leave a deep impression at all. I also find the lyrics to be mediocore at best. It’s about wanting a kiss on the first date and for some reason eating jelly beans. It’s also supposed to be about having an adult birthday. So, I guess the jelly beans are supposed to represent that she’s still innocent even though she wants to be an adult. That’s what I got from it at least. Regardless, there’s just something about this song I don’t really care for.

2. NMB48 – Junjou U-19

When this song came out I was so impressed with it. I thought the song had a great instrumental and it was extremely catchy. I even loved how elaborate, interesting, and fun the PV was. So, naturally once I saw someone had subbed the PV I was really excited to find out what the song was about. And once I finally understood the lyrics of the song I was completely turned off. The entire theme of the song is a girl wanting to wait until she’s 19 to lose her virginity. And that she doesn’t want to become an adult too quickly so let her stay pure a little longer. The entire song is catering to the fanbase that gets off on their idols being virginal and untouched. While that itself doesn’t really bother me because every idol group has this type of fanbase. Even male idol fans have something vaguely similar to this. Male idol fans seem to be delusional and convince themselves that idols in their mid-20’s, or ones pushing 30, are still virgins despite being photographed with girlfriends. Another slice of male idol fans have even been brazen enough to start petitions for their idols to break up with their girlfriends. (I’ve actually only seen this happen once, but once was enough to be honest.) I accept that both of these fanbases exist and are a huge chunk of who buys their music and merch, and therefore keep my favorite idols going. But I’m also not here for either of those fanbases, so this particular song is lost on me. I still do listen to this song occasionally because it is still a catchy song. It’s just not, and never will be, one of my favorites.

1. NYC – Wonderful Cupid

This song, this song! Listen to this song once and you’ll clearly see why it’s the perfect choice for number one. I have a real indifference to NYC, so it’s natural for me to have bad things to say about their songs initially. With most of NYC’s singles I usually hate them at first, but slowly realize that they’re actually great songs. Especially with Haina. When Haina came out I literally though, “This is terrible. What garbage are they trying to push on me now?” But after hearing it about 15-20 times I actually really love the song. Funny how that happens, right? But with Wonderful Cupid there is absolutely nothing to love. The song is so slow and boring that it sounds like a lullaby. No wonder it put me to sleep. It seems like the whole reason that NYC continued in the first place was to release singles so Hey! Say! JUMP could mature as a group. Since Hey! Say! JUMP used to be both the newest group and the group with the youngest members some of their songs for a while seemed to cater to not only Johnny’s usual niche market of teenage girls but the children market as well. Which is why to this day you see children at their concerts. I mean, at the end of Hey! Say! JUMP’s JUMP World concert DVD they thanked all the parents in the child-parent seats.
It’s obvious that Wonderful Cupid is marketed for children, which is a main factor of why I dislike the song so much. It’s too immature for me. I frequently listen to idol songs from girls who are or were 15 years old or younger in the song. But the difference there is even though they were children at the time the songs aren’t children’s songs. C-ute’s Massara Blue Jeans is more mature than this song!

Best Singles of 2012

I’m kicking things off in my annual best and worst ranking extravaganza, with my personal favorite ranking: Top Ten Best Singles of 2012.

2012 has been quite an eventful year in my personal life with tons of ups and downs, and some outright devastation. It really was a year that I won’t soon forget. And like most years it feels like it was over in a blink of the eye. I could have sworn that just yesterday it was only March or June. With this year coming to a close we can also finally say that we’ve successfully survived our 3rd apocalypse. Well, 3 in my lifetime anyway. I don’t know how many you dear readers have been alive for. And personally I get to stop hearing my dad saying it’ll all be over on December 21st. Literally for the entire year whenever something didn’t go his way or anyone in my family complained about anything he would legit say,”What does it matter anyway? You only have to the 21st.” But I digress.

2012 also marked yet another exciting roller coaster ride that is being an idol fan. One filled with more joy and heartbreak than you could really count or really measure. Personally for me the highs were: 1. the addition of Morning Musume’s 10th and 11th gen. 2. The first NEWS singles after Yamapi and Ryo left signaling that there was no stopping them. 3. My favorite Johnny’s Junior Kyomoto Taiga’s drama debut. And that the drama gave them an excuse for him to spam Shounen Club even more than usual. 3. Morning Musume selling 100,000 singles for the first time in like 8 years or more. (Obviously not counting commemorative 40th and 50th singles.) 4. MomoClo performing at Kohaku for the first time. I’m so proud of my girls. It just shows how their popularity keeps increasing.

And my personal lows were: 1. My beloved Mitsui Aika graduating from Morning Musume. 2. The cancellation of Himitsu no Arashi-chan. While I do agree the Arashi Sharehouse segment was boring, I don’t think they needed to lose the whole show. Especially since that means no more manequin 5. 3. Hello!ProTime ending. I still don’t get the point of this one. I’ve said it a hundred times now, but that was H!P’s most interesting show in years.

2012 was also a year filled with great idol music. I don’t know if it was the best year in terms of music in idol history since I’ve only been a serious idol fan since 2007. But at the very least I personally think the music released this year was better than the music released last year. And that is so exciting. It’s like further confirming why being an idol fan is worth every second of ups and downs.

So, without further ado let’s just get to the ranking already. Which by the way, was incredibly easy to pick this year. With so many great songs released this year it was very obvious which singles were the very best.

10. NMB48 – Kitagawa Kenji

This is a song that was hard to pick. Not only was it hard to pick because it’s the last song I could add to my ranking, but it was pretty difficult to pick between this song and Nagiichi. But in the end I picked this based on lyrics. While Nagiichi is catchy I wouldn’t say a song about the cutest girl on the beach is one of my favorites this year. However, the lyrics to KItagawa Kenji are completely adorable. While I don’t think I’ll ever personally be in a situation where I’m fighting a guy for a girl’s heart, especially since this song is most likely sung from a guy’s point of view, I do think the lyrics are cute. It’s so sweet that the person in this song is jealous and won’t lose to their current significant other’s past lover. But my absolute favorite part is the last line that says thanks to Kitagawa Kenji you became this beautiful. That is such a sweet, if not a little cheesy, and beautiful line. Of course the extremely catchy chorus also adds for my love of the song. I don’t know for some reason I just love singing along to the look at part.

9. Not Yet – Sukina Baby

Have you noticed a theme with this ranking already? What can I say, pretty much every idol song I like sounds exactly the same. Happy, upbeat, energetic, and super positive. If it didn’t sound like that idol groups would be no different from any other music out there. And of course that’s what’s great about this song. It’s sugary sweet sound with cutesy lyrics is absolutely addicting. This song would probably be higher on the list if the girls didn’t force their voices to sound cute at times. I really love the lyrics though. I think the whole story line of holding a candle for a childhood friend is incredibly cute and endearing. It’s also a little bit bittersweet.

8. KAT-TUN – To The Limit

This is Johnny’s song I love this year because they returned to their old sound. In KAT-TUN’s case they returned to not only their older sound but their original sound. Once Jin left the group KAT-TUN’s music continued to get heavier and they seemed to experament with different genres. To be honest their music without Jin is about 50 times better than the music with Jin. Their songs this year were so good it was hard to pick between this and Fumetsu no Scrum. But in the end this won because of how heavy it is and how gruffly it’s sung. I also appreciate the amount of Koki in this song. But as I’ve said before this song is just phenomonal. The chorus is sung so intensely and with so much power, it’s just really great. The lyrics are also just as intense

7. SUPER GiRLS – Puri Puri Summer Kiss

This is a song that I unfortunately have’t been unable to find the translation to. But that doesn’t really stop me from loving every minute of this song. Oh SUPER GiRLS borrowing the most popular elements of the most well known idol groups out their to form a pretty solid group on their own. This time it was a summer song for a shameless bikini PV. While idol groups release these songs & videos in the hopes of selling more singles, I do enjoy every minute of these songs. The songs are almost always exclusively about summer love and because of that the songs are always extremely fun and happy, this song included. As soon as the song starts it already sounds like an explosion of energy and cutesy idol music. The lyrics are kind of simple so that even with my poor Japanese skills I can translate roughly about 1/2 of the song. They seem to just be saying what they’re doing at the beach. Regardless of whatever they are actually saying the song is fun and adorable.

6. Arashi – Wild At Heart

I was absolutely in love with this song from the first moment I heard it. I just love the overall sound of this song. It has that same sillyness and energy as songs they released in past. It has a real Kitto Daijoubu mixed with Happiness feel. It’s a welcomed change from the somewhat serious songs they’ve been releasing for the past few years. The lyrics themselves are cheerful and somewhat uplifting. It’s a song about not being afraid of living in the moment. To just throw away trouble and worries and just roll with the punches. They’re not so inspiring that you’ll burst into tears, but they’re cute and I can see listening to this song when you need some encouragement. Personally, I’ve pretty much always taken this carefree approach to life. So, the song really resonates with me.

5. Momoiro Clover Z – Moretsu Uchu Kokyokyoku Dai 7 Gakusho ‘Mugen no Ai’

MomoClo is one of those groups I love for how energetic they are. Now, this song doesn’t have the same energetic flare as their past songs, but I love it because of the heavy rock music. It still makes me laugh that the dude from Megadeth did the guitar work. The song also still retains that same personality and charm that is MomoClo. But I mostly love this song because I’m a pretty big space nerd (and alien nerd. XD) so I love all the space and star references in the song and PV. It also helps that the song is incredibly catchy. I also love the choir in the background doing the harmonies. It gives the song a very elaborate and dramatic feel.

4. Passpo – Wing

I actually haven’t been able to find a translation of this song, so my love for this song is only based on the overall sound alone. I really love how this year Passpo’s singles have had a more hard rock feel to them. Passpo’s past songs have had more of a pop-rock sound. But this year it actually sounds like I’m listening to a Jrock band instead of an idol group. And since I’m a big Jrock fan that’s just perfect to me. And this song is the song they’ve released his year that has the most distinct Jrock sound. I mean, this song is having like an Alice Nine moment. It’s absolutely fantastic. And my god Ai and Shiori sound incredible in this song. It’s like this song was made perfectly for just their voices.

3. Kanjani8 – Aopanna

I really need to get over my love-hate relationship with Kanjani8, because their music is actually really great. But since I’m such a casual fan of them I tend to overlook their music until months after it’s released. And I do admit since Ai Deshita was a little boring I didn’t really bother with them this year. And that was obviously a mistake because this song is amazing. It’s got that upbeat music I love sprinkled with a little bit of weirdness that I’ve come to expect from Kanjani8. What immediately draws me to this song is the ska beat. Ska is a genre that I wasn’t really familiar with a few years ago, but ska music is really upbeat and fun. It almost sounds like tropical music. But what makes me really love the song is the lyrics. Despite the chorus being about snot it’s oddly uplifting. It’s about treasuring the past and to never stop trying to achieve your old dreams, while continuing to have that innocent spirit of your youth. It’s actually really pretty and sentimental.

2. Morning Musume – One-Two-Three

From the moment that they first performed this song at Girls Award 2012, I’ve been absolutely addicted to it. Since their 10th album had some great electronic songs, and even before that because I still don’t understand why SONGS wasn’t a single, I’ve been wishing for them to release an electronic song as a single. While their electronic effects may have been a little heavy handed this year I still think One-Two-Three is an amazing song. The instrumental stands alone as an incredible dance track. That mixed with just the right amount of auto-tuning makes for an incredibly fun and catchy song. The lyrics themselves are another reason why I love the song. I think they are adorable. I like that it’s about a girl not wanting fancy gifts just having love is enough. It’s sappy and overly sweet, just up my ally.

1. SKE48 – Aishiteraburu

This is actually the second year in a row that SKE48 has come in first place. Despite being lazy and hardly ever getting around to reviewing their PVs, I actually really love SKE48’s music. As I’ve mentioned before on my blog, for the last few years in my opinion SKE48’s music has been better than AKB48’s. I love this song because of how positive the song is. The second the song starts it’s already overflowing with energy. The infectious upbeat music makes it impossible to not crack a smile while listening to. It’s songs like this that make me continue to listen to idol music. It’s carefree happy music like this that is pretty much unique to idol music. The lyrics might be a little cheesy being about summer love, which is probably one of the most cliched story lines in pop music history. But at least for me the happy and uplifting lyrics add to the charm of the song.

And as always here are my Honorable Mentions:

1. Berryz Koubou – Cha Cha Sing
2. NEWS – Chankapana
3. AKB48 – Gingham Check
4. DIY – Forest For Rest
5. YuiKaori – Wake Up
6. Arashi – Face Down
7. S/mileage – Chotto Matte Kudasai
8. Buono – Hatsukoi Cider
9. Hey! Say! JUMP – Super Delicate
10. Kis-My-Ft2 – Wanna Beeee
11. Kis-My-Ft2 – Shake It Up
12. Berryz Koubou and C-ute – Cho Happy Song
13. Mano Erina – Song For The Date

Have yourself a very belated idol Christmas

So I decided since I enjoyed doing last year’s idol Christmas spam, I’d do one this year too. The only problem is I had no internet since Verizon has been screwing me around. I had to wait for them to send me a new wifi box and then wait for someone to hook it up. I actually wasn’t supposed to have internet until January 3rd. But the guy could squeeze us in today, so here we are.

By now I realize it’s a few days after Christmas, but that honestly couldn’t be helped. I’ve been collecting Christmas themed idol pictures for a better part of a month, so there was no way I was just going to not make this post because it’s late.

So, instead dear readers I wish you a belated Merry Christmas, belated Happy Hanukkah, a Happy Kwanzaa, a belated Winter Solstice, and a belated absolutely anything in between. I hope your Holidays were great. I know that mine were. They were of course limited, but warm just the same.

And with that being said here’s my belated Holiday pic spam! 76 pictures await you! I also tried the read more code for the first time, tell me if you prefer it and I’ll add it to all my PV review posts.

Hurricane Sandy: The Aftermath

Anyone that has been reading my blog for a while knows that I currently live in New Jersey, so naturally I was effected by Hurricane Sandy. And anyone that regularly reads my twitter knows just how bad I was effected. But my tweets are just bits and pieces of the story. Small fragments about what happened until I had the chance to write a proper blog post. And that’s exactly what I’m doing with this post here.
Despite being away from this blog for an uncharacteristically long amount of time, (This is actually the longest break I’ve had in 3 years) I actually really love blogging. I love absolutely everything about it, so of course I wanted to blog about the Hurricane. There was only one problem, I don’t have anywhere to publish this post except for this blog. Well, that’s not entirely true. I do have a personal blog, but I haven’t posted there in years. I also have a livejournal, but I don’t really keep up with posting there. I mostly have an account so I can join Johnny’s fansubbing communities.

But besides from not having anywhere else to blog I also really wanted to blog about it here, where my lovely readers that care will be able to read about what has happened to me. Because honestly, if I blogged those other two places I doubt anyone would have read them. I don’t even think most of my readers know those other blogs even exist. I did consider not even making this post here. I’m super self self conscious and I feel like my readers are angry at me for not blogging in such a long time, and now don’t care about this post at all. I always think like that, even if I missed one day of blogging.
So, here goes nothing. This post will probably be lengthy and pic heavy. As always, you’ve been warned.

I guess the easiest place to start from is the beginning. When Hurricane Sandy was first announced my entire family, expect for my dad, pretty much laughed at the storm. Since Sandy had the same amount of power as Irene we counted on the damage to be the same, and in Irene’s case that was minimal flooding. However, with Sandy that couldn’t be farthest from the truth.

I live in an uneventful one square mile beach town that is almost directly on the coast, which turned out to be one of the hardest hit places in the entire state. Ironically, I’ve always tried to keep people online from knowing exactly where in New Jersey I live, and now whether you’re aware of it or not, you’ve probably heard of my town at least once. Either on TV, in a magazine, or in a newspaper. If you live in the US that is.

At about 5:30 PM on October 29th the power was cut off. And shortly before that my family went downstairs and put all of the wires for our TV and computer up on the table. Because during Irene we got mild flooding in the living room we had to quickly unplug everything and stack in on the computer desk while the water was rushing in. So, we thought we’d be prepared this year. And a little bit after that my sister walked by one of the heating events and asked my dad about the weird gurgling noise.

Around 8 ‘oclock that night brought in not only the high tide, but also the surge. Around that time my dad busted in the room and told us how flooded it was and to get downstairs to save everything we could. What’s even more awful about my house is most of it is sunken. My house is set-up as follows: you walking in and it’s my dinning room and kitchen. You walk forward and there’s a small area to in front of the 2 sets of stairs. You turn right and immediately you walk up the stairs to go to the 2nd floor, but if you keep going straight you walk down two steps and enter my sunken living room. My sunken downstairs has 5 rooms. Living room, family room, bathroom, computer room, and a garageish storage room.

Since my downstairs is sunken the water obviously got there first. I had to immediately roll up my pant legs and get into the water. When I stepped into the water it was up to my knees and had to have been either freezing or very near freezing. Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever been in freezing water, but I don’t recommend it. It is extremely painful. I stepped in the water and my legs were instantly numb. Since they were numb they didn’t want to move, and every time I walked it felt like tiny knives were stabbing my legs. But I soldiered on. Since I’m pretty weak it was my dad and sister carried the computer modem and TV. After that was done my dad gather up important papers and my sister moved on to frantically unplugging everything. It was then my job to carry everything out of the living room and stacking it onto the dinning room table. Which means I had to keep going back in forth, in and out of the water. We managed to save the TV, computer, printer, house deed, social security cards, and birth certificates, as well as the letter I got from the president after writing to him when I was nine.

By the time the living room was emptied the water was now 3/4 the way up my thigh. Not only that, but the water was starting to rush in through the front door and spilling over the living room stairs into the dinning room. At that moment my dad looked out the window and saw that his car had floated into the middle of the street. He then stupidly opened the front door to get a better look and a gush of water rushed in. Shortly after that we went upstairs, while my dad stayed for a while longer. And good thing to because my fridge started to literally float away. My dad opened the door and filled it with water so it would remain in its place. Then my dad finally came upstairs after that. After talking for a bit, and after the initial shell shock wore off, we went to bed. Probably at about 11 or 12. But we didn’t really sleep for long because my dad busted into our room at about 6 AM to let us know the water was gone. We rushed downstairs and sure enough it was gone. Completely gone. I understand that the low tide brought the water back in, but I didn’t expect every last drop to be gone.

The next few days felt like a haze. It was filled with only being able to clean and cook during the day. We literally ate dinner by 5 ‘o’clock because it got completely dark at 5:30. In our freezer we had pork chops, chicken, and a few boxes of porkroll that we lived on for 3 or 4 days. They were obviously able to keep because we only opened the freezer when necessary. The oven part of the oven is shot, however the stove top still works. Well, half works. It doesn’t light but gas comes through, so all you need is a match to start it up.

It was after that that places to help people started opening up. The first was town hall. I walked there with my sister as we obviously couldn’t, and still can’t drive, since the car is shot. It’s awful, but I don’t fee all that bad about it. It’s not like we’re the only ones, 8 out of 10 people on my block lost their cars. When we went there you had to show ID and your name was put onto a list. In the front room next to the line of people was someone from the Air Force. I’m not gonna lie that was pretty exciting because it was the first time I’ve ever seen anyone from the military before. Through this disaster I also saw people from the Army and the Marines. After our name was written down went to a room to get supplies. We got a disaster relief food box, health and beauty supplies, a bucket of cleaning products, a mop, a broom, pillows, 2 pairs of work gloves, face masks, water, and an army blanket. We didn’t really need pillows and blankets but they made you take them.

Either that day or the very next day my dad walked to a local church where the army was set up. That’s where we got a box full of MREs (meals ready to eat). Military food actually isn’t as bad as you expect. It tastes like most canned food. But there was one I got that was pretty much inedible.

Now while all of this was happening everyone on my block was cleaning their houses. But they weren’t cleaning their houses like my family was. No, instead they straight up gutted every single piece of anything that was in their downstairs, whether it needed to be thrown away or not. And they threw absolutely everything in giant disorganized piles on their front lawn because apparently Governor Christie said to.But my god, it was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It’s too bad that we needed all our batteries for flashlights and I couldn’t take a picture. Anyway, my family on the other hand was a little more smart about it. Since this house is full of everything my parents have accumulated their entire lives we saved as much as we possibly could. Dried out pictures, kept books that weren’t that wet, clothes, lamps, and more importantly at least tried to let our appliances dry out. Also, my sister and I made it our personal mission to save all our DVDs. We own about 300 or more DVDs, which would take lots of money to replace. So we layed them all out in the sun and dried them out. We lost all the cases. Things like series we had to rip apart the cardboard cases. (Much like my collector’s edition of the X-Files.) However, you wipe them off with a cloth and they 100% play. I bet everyone else on my block threw them all away.

Also, at this point my town was still in rubble on the other said. My sister tried to look at the disaster, but the army would not let anyone near it. The side of my town by the beach was hit extremely hard. 200 houses in my town are destroyed. Houses are sitting on top of each other, nothing but wood, half ripped apart, and knocked off their foundation. Since everyone by the beach lives in one story ranch houses, during the storm they had to sit on their roves like it was Katrina because the water engulfed their entire house.

About a week after the storm I walked to my local K-8 school to file for FEMA. Since we didn’t have a phone, my dad had to file there on the phone while I waited in line. The line was to check over your account on the computer. Everyone that stood in line had a gold piece of paper, but since we were on the phone they said we didn’t need one. I stood in line for FEMA for 3 hours in the freezing cold. I even ran back to my house to get a check since my dad needed the bank account number. It wasn’t all bad since people were coming around with coffee and food. But I don’t drink coffee so that did nothing for me. Once my dad my was finally done on the food he rejoined me in line, where we found out they were taking people in order of the numbers on the gold piece of paper the man in the beginning assured me we didn’t need. People behind us were now trying to go in front of us. So my dad and I were literally yelling at the people to back up it’s out turn. And since they thought we were cutting in line they were yelling back, and for a minute it looked like an angry mob was going to attack us. Obviously everything got settled and we went next. But as soon as we were done a cop came and basically sent us off.

Somewhere in the mist of all of this my sister and I also walked to the school to get clothes. Since everyone in my house was running out of warm clothes we had to picked up used donated clothes, because it’s not like we could just throw our dirty clothes in the washer. Since my mom is handicapped from her stroke we had to go and collect her clothes too. So once all the collecting of clothes was said and done we carried like 50 pounds of clothes. Ok, it probably wasn’t 50 pounds of clothes but it certainly felt like it. I don’t recommend carry that much things to any distance, it sucks. And I’m so weak, so it was even more awful for me.

It wasn’t until November 7th that we got our power back. Which made me really sad, because it was a day late to watch the election. Last election I made patriotic ice cream and blew into noisemakers outside when Obama won. Obviously, that didn’t happen this year. No, instead I found out the next day on the radio. Even with the power restored nothing changed for us. We were still living with basically nothing. We had to get rid of our couches. And we had 5 couches! We had to rip up the carpet. Our dining room table was now in the living room holding things we wanted to save. So we made a makeshift dining room table out of a small playing card table.

We were also told we have to rip off nearly all of our sheetrock from the downstairs. My has been trying to hold that off as long as possible because no heat + no sheetrock = a horrible situation. However, we’re going to do it this Saturday. Freezing or not, we can’t have mold grow in our house. If it does our house will surely be condemned.

We were still getting food from the town hall up until like a week ago. The store is a little farther away to walk to, so we only walk there when we feel like having meat. That’s how it is even now, since we don’t have a car. My sister and I usually go to the town hall everyday to pick up hot lunch for the family. We even did that on November 20th which was my mom’s 51st birthday. But for some miracle they had bakery cakes that day, so at least she got that. And I have to say that was the best red velvet cake I’ve ever had.

Now, onto the pictures.

A handout I got from town hall letting us know where to go. Obviously I blacked out the names and addresses.

People actually handed this out on my block.

The first box of food we got.

The MREs we lived on.

The box basically tells you to be a good solider. Lol.

It’s supposed to be pulled buffalo chicken. It was disgusting. But every other meal I had was good.

The cheese and crackers was the best part. The crackers kinda tasted like matzo. I forgot to take a picture of the dessert. XD All the deserts were good. There was a granola bar, energy bar, and patriotic cookies as other desserts. The drink mixes weren’t good though. They tasted like watered down kool aid.

We also got some weird possibly military grade spam. It actually wasn’t bad.

Now that I’ve said all, another reason I made this blog post is because I need help from my readers. In the form of small donations of money. I actually agonized over asking for help, because I know there must be people out there that probably can’t believe I have the nerve to ask. And since I haven’t been keeping up with blogging I don’t know if I do have a right to. But I wouldn’t be asking for help of my family wasn’t pretty much desperate. It goes like this: home owner’s insurance doesn’t pay for floods, you need flood insurance. Flood assurance only cover the 2nd floor. You then need FEMA, but FEMA denied us. Since we actually tried to save things and still had things in our house they said we weren’t hit hard. What they actually said was, “There was no visible damage.” We live in the middle of the block and flooded the most, but because we didn’t gut our entire house for no reason we apparently suffered no damage!

I’m not asking for much I really only need some people out there to just give me $50. $50 and that will pay for my mom’s pills. Because right now we can’t even afford that, and obviously if she doesn’t have her pills there’s an 80% chance she’ll have another stroke. I just need 5 people to donate $10, or 10 people to donate $5. Hey, even if 25 people donate $2 that would help. I know this probably sounds incredibly selfish to some people. But my family obviously has nowhere else to turn except for people on the internet.

To send money all you have to do is log into and hit send money. You then enter the email address, amount of money you want to send, and click I’m sending to fmaily or friends. The email address you send it to is That is my mom’s paypal account, mostly because I don’t actually have a bank account.
If I didn’t explain this clear enough at the bottom of Airiin Deshou’s donation project post, he explains donating to someone in much greater detail than I possibly could. Read the post by clicking here.

I really do wish someone out there can help me out. I know that now it sounds like I’m begging, but honestly I’m not to proud to beg. Especially if it’s for my family.

Berryz are Thai princesses in new PV

Last month the full PV for Berryz Koubous’ recent single, Cha Cha Sing, was released.

After watching the PV I am super impressed by it. To be honest, I’ve been really excited to see the PV since the profile pics with their PV outfits were revealed. I absolutely love the outfits they are wearing. They’re Thai princesses. Princesses! I mean, what’s not amazing and perfect about that? The girls look just beyond gorgeous in them. Though if you notice the most popular members are wearing red, while the rest of the girls are wearing blue. Obviously since Berryz has an uneven number of members when they wear 2 different colors it’s gonna be split 3-4, but it’s just interesting the way they decided to pick who got what color.

Moving on to the actual PV, the main set, oh who am I kidding, the only set looks really amazing. First off it’s huge and they really took advantage of that. The back drop is draped in this really vibrant, sheer fabric. While parts of the walls and stairs are covered with, what honestly look more Indian then Thai, cloths. The close-up shots set is a little more unimpressive, as it’s just orange fabric with stars. But overall the PV is very vibrant and colorful, which makes it eye catching. Between the girls acting silly, the group close-ups, and the sporadic floating gold text, the PV is also really fun and adorable. Hello!Project never makes expensive or impressive PVs, but they are sill usually enjoyable to watch. But that’s mostly because while I’m watching a PV, after I think critics, I usually pretty much think, “My god, my girls are so fantastic.”

I love the set. But it also kinda looks like they took the fabric from their Koi no Jubaku costumes and threw it up there.

Perfect outfits.

Not really a fan of how it keeps switching from light to dark.

I like how even the dance is Thai inspired.

Hope they don’t use this gold filter too often.

Love this floating text. Ad Chinami looks positively adorable.

My god, could Yurina be anymore gorgeous?

I don’t like that Risako’s hair is more grey than purple. If she was dying purple, she should have done it 100%.

Yurina just looks incredible per usual. Adorable and gorgeous at the same time.

Saki looks great, I love her hair.

I think Maasa looks the best overall though.

So cute.

Wow Risako.

Oh Chinami, this is why I love you.

Yurina looks so amazing in this I could cry.

Miyabi is pretty and all, but this hair does nothing for her.

Love this scene.

So adorable! *O*

Walk like an Egyptian.

What is Momoko doing?

Love how they incorporate Thai writing in there.

Of course she had to get yurushite nyan in there.

Super cute.

Adorable ending.

KAT-TUN to release new single

It was recently announced that KAT-TUN will be releasing a new single.  The new single is entitled Fumetsu no Scrum and will be released on September 12th. Fumetsu no Scrum  will also be the theme song to Yasuda Shota’s drama Dragon Seinendan. And if that wasn’t enough the first press regular edition will come with a Tanaka Koki solo song and solo PV. But KAT-TUN fans don’t need to worry, because other members will get their own solos and PVs in future KAT-TUN releases.

Can I just say, I am super excited. Not so much about a new KAT-TUN single really, but the fact that Koki gets to start this off with his solo and PV. I think I’ve mentioned a few hundred times on this blog that Koki is my absolute favorite KAT-TUN member, and pretty high on my overall Johnny’s ranking. So, of course I’m happy about this. Fellow Koki fans, let us rejoice now.

I really wanna know what song it’s going to be. Koki currently has 2 unreleased solos: Anarchist and Shorty. But people are saying it’s a new song. It’s really anyone’s guess at this point. And my got if it’s another Make U Wet song I’m gonna be angry. I love Koki and all, but I hate those songs. They try so hard to be hot with oversexualized lyrics, but they’re actually awful. And hilarious and embarrassing to be honest. I actually wouldn’t mind if it was Anarchist. Just because I actually like that song, and I don’t really like the other one.

Kis-My-Ft2-Wanna Beeee PV preview

Recently the short version for Kisumai’s PV Wanna Beeee was released. Wanna Beee is from Kisumai’s upcoming double A-side 4th single, Wanna Beeee/Shake It Up, which will be released on August 18th.

I have to say, so far, this looks like Kisumai’s best PV yet. Avex seems to really give Kisumai a fairly large budget. With each release the PVs keep getting more elaboration and jut plain better. The theme for the PV is pretty simple: the members of Kis-My-Ft2 are looking for buried treasure. But it’s all the little details the make the PV look amazing. The sets are really well made, and at times over decorated which makes the overall PV extremely eye catching. I just think pirate themed PV are really cool. An Cafe just had their pirate themed Amazing Blue, which was equally awesome.

Even thought the full version of the PV is probably only another 2 minutes max, I’m still looking forward to see the finished results.

S/mileage-Suki yo, Junjou Hankouki preview

A couple of days ago the full radio rip for S/mileage’s upcoming new single Suki yo, Junjou Hankouki was released. Just because I haven’t mentioned it before, this new single is being released on August 22nd.

Since their major debut S/mileage has been releasing a lot of singles with heavy electronic music, hnd this single isn’t any different. However, I don’t think it’s as strong as their past singles such as Yumemiru 15 sai or Uchouten Love. The overall sound is just ok. It’s honestly a little bit of a letdown for me since S/mileage is usually really consistent with their singles, nearly all of them have been great. This single just falls flat. And it’s another one of those songs where it doesn’t really sound like there’s a chorus. The music barely changes during the chorus and the singing only gets a fraction higher. And even then it’s only for the first 3 lines, then the rest of the chorus sounds exactly like the verse.

The only aspect of this song that I really like is of course the line distribution. It’s actually fair. Which is amazing I was being to forget S/mileage actually has more than 4 members. It sounds like everyone gets a nice amount of lines. But it sounds like poor Meimi and Kana get the least. The most exciting part is that Rinapu actually gets to sing, and a lot. It seems like H!P finally realized they had her join because she can sing. Rinapu gets a lot of her because of her looks, but I was rooting for her to join because of her amazing voice. And she does sound great in this song. Akari and Rina honestly sound the best in this song. It’s just more suited for a deeper voice. And at one part of the song someone’s singing sounds really similar to Chisato’s. It’s either Akari or Kana, I can’t really tell. But, I hope I’m not the only one who hears it.

My thoughts on ManoEri’s graduation

A little over a week ago it was announced that Hello!Project’s sole soloist, Mano Erina would be graduating from Hello!Project. Mano Erina will graduate from Hello!Project on February 23, 2013 during H!P’s winter concerts. Erina stated her reason for graduating was so she could pursue her own potential and to broaden her abilities in singing and acting beyond what she has now.

This really is surprising news. I can honestly say I didn’t see it coming. I actually thought that ManoEri would stay with H!P for a while, because despite her singles not selling all that well she does get a decent amount of magazine work. I actually just recently said pretty much exactly that on H!O. I also said, “Because of that I doubt H!P would let her go anytime soon, so if she does graduate soon it will be because she wants to.” And of course I also said something about her only being 21 so she could be an idol for 4 or 5 more years. And I seriously must be cursed because everytime I say I don’t think an idol will graduate anytime soon, poof they announce their graduation. Weeks prior to Aika’s graduation I said on tumblr that people don’t realize Aika is only 19 and could still be an idol for 7 more years. And we all know how that went down.

I have to say, quite honestly, I am not that effected by ManoEri’s graduation because I wasn’t that big of a fan of hers. When I first heard the news I gasped and said, “Oh no.” That was honestly it. I’ve always had a love hate relationship with ManoEri, and I’ve had a lot of fun with her over the years. Saying that she looks like a rabbit and her singing voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard. All in good fun of course. But the truth is I did like her. I wasn’t and super huge fan, and I’m not going to claim to be because she’s graduating. I was always just a casual fan.

ManoEri started out in Ongaku Gatas which is another group I wasn’t that into. To be honest, I only listened to them because my beloved KonKon was a member. I remember thinking it was completely random to pull a memeber out of the group to go solo. But I gave her the benefit of doubt. However, when Mano Piano was released I was pretty much done. The chorus of that song was just so rough. Rough isn’t even a strong enough word. Let’s be honest, it was awful. After that I really didn’t listen to her solo stuff.

Once ManoEri went major I decided to give her another shot around the time her second single came out because I liked that it had a different sound and was more energetic. I actually liked it. But it still wasn’t enough for me. So I just became a fan who listened to her singles every once in a while.

It wasn’t until Genkimono de Ikou came out that I went, ok ManoEri is awesome. And after that I started to really like most of her past singles. But still just her singles. I think I’ve listened to her album songs a grand total of once. But I did start to follow her upcoming releases, which was more than I was doing before.

I’ve just realized that this entire post makes it seem like I don’t care at all she’s graduating. But that’s not the case. I do care, just not at the same level as someone like Aika or Koharu. I am still sad to see her go because I absolutely love Song For The Date, I think it was her best single ever in my opinion. I love the full on dance direction her music was going into with her past few singles and her More Friends Over album. It’s really a shame we won’t get to see what kinds of music she was going to make in the future. But since it’s August now I expect we’ll get 1 or 2 more singles and maybe even a final album before she graduates. I would have liked to here even more than that from her, but what are you gonna do?

I must also add, that losing an H!P girl is always a sad moment. Whether or not they are my favorites, there are always some reedeming quality about them. And with ManoEri it was her bright smile and who absolutely bubbly she was during concerts. I’m honestly going to miss that.

And as always, as a celebration to her, here are some of my favorite songs featuring ManoEri.

Why Momusu’s new PV was the letdown of the year

Last mont the full PV for Morning Musume’s 50th single, and apparent double A-side, One-Two-Three/The Matenrou Show. I say apparent because obviously The Matenrou Show never got a PV at all. Which does fuel the flames a bit.

One-Two-Three was the single that was hyped so much. It seemed every chance they got H!P was teasing us even more with it. The gorgeous outfit preview from Hello!Pro Time. The fancams of the performance of it from Tokyo Girls Collection. And the dance shot that was uploaded weeks before the full PV was out.

Now, between all of this it was enough to absolutely fall in love with everything about this single. The outfits were gorgeous, sexy but still cute at the same time, each girl had unique and pretty hairstyle, making the members look incredible from head to toe. The dance shot showed so much potential, it was finally filmed in a well decorated set. It appeared that they finally put some real effort into it. And of course the song is absolulte perfection in my opinion. All of this gave not just myself, but the entire H!P fandom as a whole, these gigantic expectations for the PV. Expectations that sadly this PV couldn’t fill.

After watching this PV for the first time the only thing I could muster out was, “I’m so disappointed.” And I completely am, I feel like flipping tables over here. Never have I seen a PV set up to be such flawless perfection, and then drop the ball so completely. This PV had everything going for it. Flawless outfits, flawless girls, and an interesting dance set. All they had to do was make sure the close-up scenes weren’t awful and they’d be home free.

But apparently that was too much to ask. Instead the close-up shots consist of them standing in a room of mirrors acting like dolls on display. I don’t think quite possibly anything out there cheaper looks than glass/mirrors. But again I guess there is because if you look really closely I don’t even think they are even in a room filled with glass. To me it look like they just digitally created the effect. Genius. However, the whole dolls on display thing is kind of cool. But at the same time, Fantasy Juuichi’s jacket called and they want their concept back.

It also wasn’t enough to make the close-up scenes awful. No, they had to take it one step further and make it look like the entire PV cost $5 to make. And how does one pull of such a feat? It’s simple really, download some snowflake and splatter brushes for photoshop, cover the entire span of the PV in them, and call it a day. They really need to question however thought that was a good idea. And what really makes me angry is, you could excuse the PV because they had to split the budget for 2 different PVs. Except they didn’t at all. They were supposed to, but didn’t. Did they really give all the budget to promotions? I honestly can’t complain if they did because my girls sold over 100k.

But at the same time we are once again we’re left with a PV that’s only enjoyable to watch because the girls look so pretty. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I just always expect a little more from my idols.

Bored already to be honest.

Oh, dramatic close-ups.

Ayumi looks amazing.

I absolutely love how intense the dance is.

Haruka’s default doll pose just looks so uniterested. Lol.

Oh ew, do they have to stay in the same position for the entire close-up?

They haven’t even shown her face yet and the girls is already bringing it.

Just wow Mizuki, super gorgeous.

Poor Erina gets one of the worst hiarstyles.

Zukki looks a little awkward in her close-ups, but that’s ok.

You know, I never really pay much attention to Haruna, but she looks incredible here.

However, Mizuki is the realy stand out for me. She’s really been stepping it up lately.

I love Ayumi’s hairstyle.

Riho being all flawless.

WTF is with this pose?

Haruka’s close-ups still don’t look natural enough for me.

Sayu is just not standing out in this PV really.

I think  my readers should know by now that I’m a sucker when it comes to idol winks.

My baby Masaki.

She’s just so cute.

Ah, wink again.

They’re killing me over here.

I don’t even know why, but I just love this shot.

Harunan wink.

Simply gorgeous.

Ah Ayumi, you still look a little creepy at times. Lol.

Words cannot describe how much I love Masaki.

Really love this hairstyle, but H!P seems to be overusing it lately.

Happy 4th birthday Janakya Mottainai!

My dear and loyal readers it’s time to put on your party hats and pop the champagne because Janakya Mottainai is celebrating it’s 4th birthday today! And I do mean actually today. This marks the first year of writing these blog birthday/anniversary posts that I’ve actually posted it on the actual day I started blogging. So, small victory there. The main reason I am finally posting this on my blog’s actual birthday is because if you haven’t noticed I haven’t really been blogging in a while. Mostly because real life has gotten in the way a bit, so I wanted this post to mark my triumphant return. So let’s thrown some extra confetti for that.

Well, you’d think after 4 years of blogging, and having written birthday post before, I’d finally have a grip of what to say here. You’d think that, but of course that’s not the case. I mean, what do you really say in situations like these?  Yet another year has past making it an astonishing 4 years. 4 years! If you would have told me 4 years ago that I’d still be blogging today I wouldn’t believe you. If you said I’d be posting nearly 4 times as much today as I did the first year there’s no way I would have believe you. And if you said you said 4 years later the love, interest, and support of my blog keeps growing and expanding each day I absolutely wouldn’t have believed you.

A lot has happened this past year. I moved my blog to a different site, which was totally intimidating for someone as awful at computers as myself. I also am more active on other sites that I’ve joined to spread the love of my blog. You guys should totally follow me on twitter and tumblr if you don’t already. Seriously, here’s my Twitter and my Tumblr.

But of course even more has happened in the world of idols and this blog. Complete ups and downs. Like losing my beloved Mitsui Aika and having my favorite Johnny’s group, NEWS, losing even more memebers, among them my favorite member Nishikido Ryo. And through it all I openly admited for the entire world just how much I cried over both things. Mostly because I don’t really care and I take my idols super seriously. But despite all the sad times nothing really compares to the excitement and thrill of your favorite idol releasing a perfect single, or an incredible concert, or announcing new auditions. It’s part of the intense roller coaster ride that being an idol fan is all about. And it’s seriously a range of emotions that only other idol fans can understand. It’s one of the only times where you can feel nervous, excited, and proud all at the same time.

It’s things like this that keep me interested in blogging and idols in general. There is constantly something going on, constantly idols coming and going, and constantly new idol groups forming. For me it’s a genre that’s never stagnant and I’ve never gotten bored of them yet. Which has happened with other genres before. And seriosuly the more idol groups you juggle the more exciting it is. Which is why I listen to so many different groups and feature so many on this blog. And people reading this, seriosuly don’t limit yourself to one gender of idol groups. Even if your not attracted to dudes, in my opinion Arashi have the most entertaining varitey shows out there, and no other idol group puts out as good a concert as them. And if even if you’re not into chicks in my opinion no other idol group is as fun, happy, and super positive as, well any female idol group really, but let’s say Momoiro Clover Z or Morning Musume. It is seriously impoosible to feel sad while watching their concerts.

Gosh, this post has turned way mushier than I expected. It’s turned more into a gush fest over my love of idols rather than a celebration of my blog. But in the same breath it seems kind of fitting because that’s basically what I do on this blog. Gush about my idols and poke the occasional fun at them. All out of love of course.

I’ve been blogging for th past 4 years but it hardly feels like that at all. It literally feels like I started just yesterday. And in that time I seriously love blogging way more than I did when I first started. 4 years have passed, and I can confidently chant 4 more years.

And in celebration of my blog here’s a live performance of the song I got my name from.

KAT-TUN-To The Limit PV preview

The PV preview for KAT-TUN’s new single, To The Limit, is out.

I am absolutely in love with this song and I am also pleasantly surprised that the PV matches up to the amazingness of the song. It’s not the type of PV you really expect from an idol group. It’s not even the type of PV you’d expect after hearing the song. But at the same time I think it really works. There’s a lot of effort put into this PV. It seems to have a big budget and a clear storyline. And it’s so different from past KAT-TUN PVs. KAT-TUN usually has pretty decent PVs, but they hardly ever have storylines.

The previews so far show the members of KAT-TUN all being in a bank during a robbery. Kame, Maru, and Koki work there, while Taguchi and Ueda are hostages. It’s a bit of a darker theme compared to the realativly happy or mature PVs KAT-TUN usually makes. And I’m assuming the lyrics of the song work well with the theme. Since they’re most likely about being stretched to the limit in some way. But I don’t speak Japanese, so I have no idea.

The only drawback of this PV are that it’s probably supposed to be taken more seriously then it seems. There are parts of this PV that I can’t help think are adorable or hilarious. Which probably wasn’t the intention at all. Also, I kind of wish Koki worked in the bank itself instead of being a security guard. Him in a suit and glasses would have been pretty sexy. Ridiculous hair or not.

Yamapi-Love Chase PV preview

The PV preview for Yamapi’s 2nd solo single since leaving NEWS, Love Chase, has recently been released.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s hilarious how little effort is being put into Yamapi’s career post NEWS. Well, PV wise anyway. I don’t care enough to know if he’s doing concerts or appearances. He leaves NEWS just to have this medicore solo career. And it’s not even like he’s doing more once he left NEWS. His solo singles are being released just as frequently as when he was a part of NEWS, and he was in a drama. Pretty much just like he would be doing with NEWS. Sorry, but I’ll never stop being bitter about this.

But moving on to the topic at hand, I have to admit I actually do like his solo singles. But it’s more of a love/hate thing. His singles are really danceable and catchy. However, no matter how much he’s been pushing himself into the role, his voices has never suited dance music. He’s better suited for soft ballads. So, he’s in this weird place where the overall sound of his music is good but he’s voice sounds out of place. At least for me anyway.

And his PVs aren’t much better. This PV so far looks just awful. It’s basically nothing but Yamapi dancing in different outfits, sometimes with a girl, on a plain gray backdrop. Really cutting edge there Warner. There is absolutely no effort in this PV at all. It seems like the director is just hoping you won’t care boring the PV is and just focus on the fact that there’s 3 Yamapi’s.

And I might me able to if his new haircut wasn’t so hideous. It looks fine went it’s styled a bit, but when it’s just laying flat it’s terrible. And the outfits he’s wearing aren’t helping much either. One of them looks like he’s ready to play golf or teach high school English. The other one is him in a trenchcoat. Which is ridiculous because no one wears them indoors unless they’re Columbo. And the last outfit is supposed to be the idol outfit for the fans. Since he’s wearing an effeminate parka and a skin tight shirt. Which I do admit I kind of like. Except for the ripped pants.

I’ve just so over Yamapi to be honest. When he was in NEWS he was never anything more than the guy who could sing and was eyecandy. That hasn’t really changed much now, except you add the animosity I still have towards him.

Kikkawa Yuu-Koko Kara Hajimarunda preview

Last month the full radio rip for Kikka’s 4th single, Koko Kara Hajimarunda was released.

I do apologize dear readers for how old this is and for how long it took me to make this post. But luckily since the single isn’t coming out until July there hasn’t been a PV preview yet and I still have time to write about the radio rip.

The more music I hear by Kikka the more upset I get that H!P let her just float around in the Eggs for so long. Absolutely everything about Kikka is just perfect and flawless. With each release I fall more and more in love with her and her music. And this song does not disappoint at all.

Since debuting Kikka has been releasing a lot of upbeat dance music. And this song seems to be following that pattern. This song has this computerized and electronic sound which I absolutely love. They also managed to do this without adding too much effects to her voice. I think the little bit they added was just the right amount and worked perfectly. Overall the whole sound of the song is just amazing. It’s fun, it’s catchy, and it’s upbeat. And it’s sung with the same seamlessness as all of Kikka’s songs.

Morning Musume-The Matenrou Show preview

Recently the radio rip for the second A-side from Morning Musume’s upcoming 50th single, One-Two-Three/The Matenrou Show, was released.

Now, I just made a post about the One-Two-Three radio rip and said how much I absolutely loved the song. So, I was expecting a lot from this song. I was really hoping for their 50th single to be just perfect. However, this song has to come along and ruin that. Coming after the epicness that is One-Two-Three this song is awful in comparison. Just what happened? Tsunku said that this song was going to be funky so I expected it to be a lot of fun. Especially after how sexy and mature One-Two-Three is.

Instead we get a song that is also mature and sounds like a mix between Morning Musume’s Inspiration and Berryz Koubou’s Shining Power. Which sounds like a winning combination. But somehow it’s just not. And I do like disco-esque songs but for some reason I just have no attachment to this song. It just sounds kind of flat and lifeless. I kept waiting for it to get better and it never did. I don’t know why this single is a double A-side because honestly this song is much more suited as a B-side.

And what in the world is going on with the line distribution? I seriously feel like flipping tables over it. Did the entire world teleport back to 2008 when I wasn’t looking or something? The entire song is sung by Riho and Reina. The entire song! Now, when One-Two-Three came out I didn’t care that it was sung by basically no one but Riho and Reina ,because most girls at least got a little solo. And I was also holding out for this single for the other girls to shine. However, that is so far from the case and the other girls get nothing. And my god, my poor baby Zukki doesn’t have a line in either songs! I get it, Reina and Riho are popular. But that’s only because the other memebers aren’t even given a chance to build a fanbase. They added new members but are still making the same mistakes they did in 2008. What in the world is management thinking? I swear if I didn’t love this group and the girls so much stuff like this would make me give up on Momusu. I’m honestly sick of it. It’s absolutely insane that when Morning Musume was at it’s largest the line distribution was more fair than it is now!

Fairies-Tweet Dream preview

A few days ago the radio preview for Fairies song Tweet Dream, off their upcoming doublr A-side 4th single, has been released.

I can honestly say that I wasn’t expecting the song to sound the way it does at all. I’ve grown accustomed to Fairies mature sound. It’s actually what drew me to them in the first place. That they were so different than other idol groups. Tweet Dream is actually too cute of  a song and the complete opposite of what I expect from them. I do realize that this isn’t their first time releasing this type of song. But Sweet Jewel was a better song and had a charm to it. Granted that charm came from the fact that is sounds a lot like Diamonds by Princess Princess.

I’m just really disappointed by this song. It’s lacking the power and emotion of their other songs. It doesn’t pack a punch at all. Most of their other songs draw me in with a catchy chorus or interesting music. They are going for this cutesy electronic sound that just does not work for them. Ironically, if practically any other group made this song I might enjoy it more. Though I’m not 100% sure about that. As I’ve said before I hate songs that don’t pick up in the chorus and stay the same level the entire song. Which is exactly what this song is doing. The music also isn’t bold enough. I love all the cute background effects because they remind me of Internet Cupid by Buono. I just wish they were used more.
