Ryosuke’s mysterious debut PV

Recently the full PV for Yamada Ryosuke’s first solo single, Mystery Virgin, was released.

When I watched this PV there are a few things I noticed: how white the PV is, how simple it is, but more importantly how much is reminds me of horror movies. Well, not so much horror movies in general, just a series of movies in particular.

I don’t know if readers know this about me but I absolutely love horror movies. I’ve been watching them as long as I can remember, and have probably seen at least 500 of them. Now when I watch this PV all I can think about are the Cube movies. If you’ve never heard of them, I don’t really blame you. They are about 15 years old and weren’t exactly extremely popular. But I used to watch them a lot. The whole premise of those movies is, you’re trapped in a giant cube with like 500 rooms that will kill you if you stay in them too long. And both of the sets of the PV remind me a lot of the Cube sets. Especially the set where he’s dancing since he’s dancing in a tiny cube.

It’s just hard to decide whether he’s trapped in Cube 2

or Cube Zero.

Besides nerding out over the fact that the PV reminds me of Cube, the PV itself is extremely simple. And there’s just too much white going on. Not only is Ryosuke dressed in essentially all white with two different outfits, both sets are completely white. I don’t know if the makers of this PV were trying to go for a crisp and clean look, or they wanted the fans to think they’re in some weird Ryosuke heaven, I don’t know. It’s just too much white to such an extent that my favorite scenes are when they flip on the sepia camera filter. Just because it gives your eyes a break from all that white and it feels like there’s a little bit of variety in this PV.

But I shouldn’t be dogging the PV so much, as it does try to have a story line. Despite having a budget of what looks like $100 they did throw in some last minute story. The PV starts out with, not only the way the entire PV should have been filmed, but also Ryosuke falling backwards. Seemingly pushed to the ground by Ryosuke’s evil hood up twin. Most like everybody who finds themself in the Cube, he wakes up not knowing exactly where he is or what’s going on. I actually thought through most of the PV that the other Ryosuke was trying to steal his identity, but that wasn’t the case. Through most of the PV Ryosuke wanders the halls aimlessly, but somehow still finds time to dance.

Rysouke also notices there’s a camera and right then the PV went into KAT-TUN’s Run For You territory. Because the looming evil Ryosuke who doesn’t seem to really do his job since he only follows Ryosuke like twice, has a whole room of video that’s constantly monitoring trapped Ryosuke. What’s with another weird kidnapping and surveillance PV from Johnny’s? What are they trying to tell us? Or is this just the dream Johnny’s dorm?

Then miraculous, for reasons that aren’t explained, Ryosuke finds a disc and just instinctively knows where to put it. Which personally I think was a mistake because it made the contrast go up by like 150%. But he’s in luck because he defeated the Red Queen Ryosuke hologram and had a very Eagle Eye moment. (Please tell me people are getting these movie references?)

As a whole, the PV is just ok. I fault it for the simplistic sets and ridiculous dance. But at the same time I give it points because it at least attempted to add a story line.

Ryosuke looks cute here.

Ryosuke’s evil twin looming over him.

Love watching idols sleep. In a non-creepy way of course.

I just can’t with this dance.

You seem unsure of where you are Ryosuke. Try hard to see if you remember anyone wearing pig masks.

Apparently Ryosuke designed this jacket himself, too bad it’s hideous.

From this angle the set looks pretty cool.

What did they hire H!P’s choreographer?

Of course you’re lost you don’t have the savant telling you which numbers are prime. (Cube reference, for no one’s benefit besides my own.)

Ok, this is kinda hot.

This is unintentionally funny.

Ryosuke, you’re face isn’t helping much.

WTF is he doing?

Adorable.

These are the most awkward parts of the dance. The wannabe Michael Jackson moments.

Ryosuke you look much better in sepia.

Why is smelling his jacket exactly?

He does look pretty cute when he’s pretending to be scared.

Trying too hard to be sexy Yama-chan.

I didn’t realize this was KAT-TUN’s Run For You PV.

*O*

Now it’s really the Run For You PV.

It really is.

Make sure you pick up the magic disc.

This isn’t really what I was expecting.

Oh, no more evil Ryosuke.

But it’s a good thing he defeated the Red Queen before it was too late.

Cute.

My favorite idols

A while ago on twitter I mentioned that I wanted to do an idol ranking. But I also mentioned that I was a little unsure of how to set it up. Should I just rank every member of every group that I follow, or should I just try to put my favorites in order of least favorite to favorite? Well, I decided to not do either. Since I follow so many different idol groups ranking every single member would be such a hassle and take so long. I also couldn’t do the second option because it would be absolutely impossible to really rank the idols, since I pretty much love my favorites evenly. Instead I’m just going to name my favorite idols and why. It’s not immediately what you think of when you hear the word ranking, but it is still technically a ranking since I am listing my favorites and excluding others.

So, without further adieu I present my ranking. I just want to note, that yes I am skipping all the 48 group members. Just because I am still such a novice  and haven’t had the time to properly watch their variety shows, so I don’t think I can properly judge a favorite yet. (Wow, I sound like a broken record with this. But I seriously do not have enough time to watch their variety shows. And it’s hard to say when in the foreseeable future I will have time. :/)

Aiba Masaki:

Now, this might be surprising to readers of my blog because I never really mention Aiba all that much. Mostly due to the fact that I really only review their PVs and not like dramas or variety shows. And during PVs reviews I mainly point out who looks good in the PV. Which is mostly Nino, since I think he’s the best looking member. And honestly I’m not that attracted to Aiba. He’s not really that good looking. However, when it comes to personality, and overall just how awesome the idol is, in Arashi for me it’s all about Aiba. He is my absolute favorite Arashi member hands down, no question. I just think everything about Aiba’s personality is appealing. I just love his bright and cheerful personality, because of that I think he’s the most entertainig member. He also seems like an all-around sweet and genuine person. On an episode of Himitsu no Arashi-chan a guest said something like, “You can always trust, or see how good a person is, if they like animals.” That’s pretty much how I feel about Aiba.

Suzuki Airi:

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned my love of Airi either. This is why I needed to write this post. I’ve always had a pretty strong attachment to Airi because of Buono. I’ve been a fan of Buono since they formed. But the reason that I love Airi is because she’s absolutely adorable and completely charming. Airi is just so entertaining to watch she’s fun and dorky, but more importantly she’s hilarious. She constantly makes me laugh with her puns. Everyone used to think it was both Airi in Yuuka who were like the pun queens, but to be honest there was never really any competition for me. There’s just a quality about Airi that makes me want to run up to her and hug her.

Tanaka Koki:

When I first became aware that KAT-TUN existed I did not get the appeal of Koki. I didn’t think his whole image and rapping fit in with KAT-TUN’s sorta rockish sound. And I didn’t really think he was that easy on the eyes. But that all changed when I watched Cartoon KAT-TUN. I saw Koki’s true personality and I loved it. He was funny and charming. I noticed him the most during Cartoon KAT-TUN. And he was always pretty blunt, and always said exactly what was on his mind, but more in a joking way than a mean way. I do think Koki is pretty cute now. But that’s due to good hair mixed with liking his personality so much it formed a physical attraction. Am I the only one who does that?

Suzuki Kanon:

My beloved Zukki, what can I really say about her? She’s an idol I was drawn to immediately. After her bright smile and comedy sketch at the auditions I wanted her to join so badly. And of course she did. Zukki hasn’t really bored me yet. With her signature bug imitations and her funny personality I’m completely captivated by Zukki. I love that everything she does is done with her bright smile. She’s just so adorable and still seems so innocent. I mean, she still carries around her stuffed bear Cha-chan. She’s just fun personified.

Nishikido Ryo:

I’ve already said in detail how I feel about Ryo-chan in my 30 day idol challenge day 1 post. So, I’ll just very briefly again go over why I like him. I like Ryo for his slightly aggressive, “I’m so cool” persona. I think he’s hilarious and I love all his signature poison tongue jabs. I also like that he also shows his insecure and embarrassed side from time to time as well. I just find everything about Ryo appealing.

Nakanishi Kana:

Kana was one of those girls that I did not want to join the group, but once she did join it all made sense. The reason I love Kana is because she’s another funny girl like Zukki. With her gorilla loving attitude. To me she also seems to be a little KY. She seems to goof off whenever even if it’s not the right time for it, or other people are annoyed be it. She just seems to be so loud and fun. And I like that she tries to make her charm point that she’s the only H!P member from Osaka, but I honestly haven’t seen her mention that much since a little after she joined.

Momota Kanako:

Now, I do admit that I don’t know all that much about Kanako since the lack of Momoclo subs. But the little I do know about her I love. My favorite used to be Momoka, I do still like her but after watching some clips I was more drawn to Kanako. Kanako seems to be so happy-go-lucky and bursting with energy, which I love. I also love her signature high jumps. And her overall gymnastic skills are pretty impressive. I don’t really get why Reni is the electrifying one, I can totally see that suiting Kanako more.

Tamamori Yuta:

Tama is another member that I don’t know everything about. Mostly because I just became a fan when they debuted in 2011. And I’m honestly still on the fence about them, some of their songs are great, but some are awful. What I like about Tama is no matter what he’s doing he seems to overreact more than he needs to. Whether that’s just the way he is or not, it’s still pretty hilarious. He’s just got this sort of endearing charm about him. Where he just seems so sweet and sorta naive, and dorky, and weird that you just want to hug him. That’s exactly how Kamei Eri was, and is probably the main reason I like him so much. He also seems to be a little wimpy which I find appealing. Yeah, I said it, don’t judge me.

Mori Shiori:

Passpo is one of those groups that I love, but has nothing, besides a few songs, translated into English. It is so hard to try to like an idol you know nothing about. So, everything I like about Shiori is based on the impression I get from her. Of course what drew me to Shiori instantly was her bright smile. But what I like about Shiori is that she just exudes happiness and energy. Whenever I see her in PVs or concerts she’s just like a bouncing ball of positive energy.

Masuda Takahisa:

When Ryo left NEWS I had to find a new favorite member, and I was sure if would be KoyaShige. But pretty unexpectedly I realized I was paying more attention to Massu, but at the same time it made sense. When Ryo was a member I didn’t really pay attention to Massu because their personalities were on such opposite sides of the spectrum that Massu always seemed kinda immature in compassion. But Massu’s fun loving spirit and childish nature is what I love about idols. Which is why slowly over the years I did start to pay more attention to Massu. Massu really is adorable, and cuteness has been his main image for years. Well, that and being gluttonous. He’s almost like Ogawa Saki in male form.

Tokunaga Chinami:

I’ve said on my blog before that the reason I love Chinami so much is because she reminds me a lot of myself. (Well if you took Chinami’s energetic side, Zukki’s funny side, Airi’s bad puns, and Sayu’s bluntness you’d get pretty close to my personality.) I love Chinami because of how energetic, upbeat, and generally happy she is. It’s just such an infectious and lovable quality. Chinami is also a girl after my own heart as she loves to sleep as much as I do.

Nakajima Yuto:

Yuto has been my favorite Hey! Say! JUMP member since I became a fan. There’s just something I’ve always liked about Yuto. What really draws me to Yuto is how energetic Yuto is. He’s always bursting with energy and acting over the top. Ryosuke even said that backstage out of nowhere he’ll be yelling even if he’s by himself. Yuto also just seems so easy going and carefree. Which is what I really like about him. Yuto is also very dorky and quirky. And he’s never never cared about basically make a fool of himself. He just seems so innocent and genuine to me. He’s also an all around nice guy and is good friends with most of JUMP.

Fukuda Kanon:

You know I couldn’t forget my beloved Kanyon. I have been a fan of her since I first layed eyes on her in Shugo Chara Egg. I’ve gotten this cute little sister vibe from her. And I actually do like Kanon’s personality. Shockingly I have nothing against playing the whole “I’m the cutest ever” idol persona. It’s just to me Sayu’s seems less of an act and more real at times, and she’s said a few things that as a fellow female I was pretty annoyed by. I do like that when Kanon gets into her whole Cinderella/cute idol character her whole demeanor changes. She gets a lot more dramatic, and she even changes the way she speaks. Which is pretty funny. Which in a way is poking fun at her whole character completely. Or at least that’s how I take it.

Okamoto Keito:

Back when I first got into HSJ I did not see the appeal of Keito at all. He was the guy that was just there, and I always thought he was a little weird looking. But over the years I started to see Keito’s appeal. And pretty much the entire reason I love Keito is because he’s the most awkward idol ever. He seriously is, a lot of times he just sits there and doesn’t say anything. It seems like he’s never sure exactly what he’s supposed to be doing. Most of the time they just use him to be the guy that says things in English. He’s so socially awkward that he once said he’s not comfortable talking when there’s a large group of people around. He’s also fallen down while filming things like 3 times before. His awkwardness just makes him adorable and endearing.

And there you have it my favorite idols. I do want to point out these aren’t all of the idols that I love. I obviously love WAY more idols than this. I just didn’t include my favorite graduated idols or my number 2 idols because I didn’t want this post to be a mile long. I tried to rank just my number 1 idols from each group. Some groups like, S/mileage and Hey! Say! JUMP, have 2 idols, and that’s because those idols are tied for first place. I absolutely could not pick just one for those groups. All of the other groups have a clear number 1. If people honestly care about my my favorite graduated idols or my number 2 idols, I am make another one of these ranking posts sometime in the future.

Kisumai fail to shake things up

And just like that I’m back to blogging. So, hopefully my dear readers have really missed my blogging. I certainty hope they missed my PV reviews because since I missed so many PVs last year, I’m going to be reviewing the ones that either my readers wanted to see or my personal favorites that I missed.

And without further ado, onto the PV review.

Shake It Up by Kisumai may seem like an odd first choice, and it is. But a few months ago on twitter one of my followers, and obviously blog readers, asked me when I was going to review this PV. And I told them as soon as the full PV was released. Little did I know that never actually happened. I actually kinda feel bad for not living up to my word on that, so this PV became top priority.

Can I just start out by saying I am absolutely sick of this song? When I first heard it as the theme for the Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou drama I really loved the song. And when Bakaleya6 and Takaki performed it for the first time I thought that was perfect. But since then it’s become Bakaleya6’s basically theme song and they’ve performed it maybe 6 or 7 different times. And because I’m such a Kyomoto Taiga fan, I’ve probably watched them perform it like 30 times. Too much of a good thing, and now I’m sick of it.

As for the PV, I can’t say I’m a fan of it either. The PV has a club theme, which makes sense considering it’s a dance song. But that premise feels completely flat to me. Maybe because 70% of America videos have been filmed in night clubs over past 4 years or so. But it’s mostly because if you’ve seen one club video, you’ve seen them all. There’s not really much you can do with a club setting. You either go with Yamapi’s One in a Million PV where you fall in love in a club (cue Usher song here) or you go with Kisumai’s format for this PV which is nothing but dancing.

And honestly that’s completely stale, I’m over that. But not only that, if you’re going to make the PV focus heavily on dancing you should make sure the choreography isn’t awful. The choreography for Shake It Up is so simple that it borders on ridiculous. They’re basically swinging and shaking their hands the entire time. And sometimes lifting their leg. It looks like dancing I’d do in a club, not something idols trained in dancing would do. But hey, I can’t really complain they managed to lose the roller skates for at least one PV. That’s pretty much all I can ask from Kisumai.

I do have to give Kisumai half a point because they do attempt to shake things up (see what I did there?) and add some variety to the PV. Which would have worked if those elements weren’t borrowed from other PVs. First off, the the self filming/ panning of one person shot. I obiviously don’t make music videos for a living and have no idea what the correct term for that is, but if you’ve seen the PV you know what I’m referring to. It immediately makes me think of Yamapi’s Hadakanbo PV. But since I explained in my review of that PV how the entire PV was a complete rip off of Mike Posner’s Cooler Than Me video, it’s kinda become panning-seption now.

The other more obvious borrowed element is the brown chair. Now, if you’ve seen the PV for Face Down by Arashi you’ll remember that 90% of the PV focused on Arashi sitting in big brown chairs. While Kisumai do move more around in it than Arashi did, it’s still something I’ve seen before and therefore boring.

While I’m on the subject of copying PVs, this whole PV makes me think of Daikoku Danji’s Love Parade PV. I don’t know if my readers of this blog are familiar with this group, but Daikoku Danji are a Kpop crossover group which I do adore because of how, besides B1A4, they are the only male Kpop group who’s songs and PVs really sound and look like a male Jpop group. Most of the male crossover groups just look and sound like Kpop in Japanese. I might actually review their past PVs for fun sometime in the future. But I digress.

The Love Parade PV is hardly similar to this PV, so don’t start yelling at me that the PVs are completely different. It’s just the overall feel that is the same. Both groups are styled very similarly, both groups have a club setting, both groups even hold up the word love. Of course Kisumai has a club full of people while Daikoku Danji are alone. And a handful of other differences. I don’t know there’s just something about the Love Parade PV that immediately makes me think of this one.

I also don’t really like the outfits. There as flamboyant and almost embarrassing as most male idol outfits are. But there’s something about them that are almost cringe worthly. Maybe it’s Taisuke’s woman’s jacket, Tama’s puked up a nebula scarf, or Hiro’s wannabeee (I’ll stop with the puns soon, I swear) punk rock jacket. It might even be Yoko’s what-were-they-thinking pants, I don’t know. But whatever it is, at the very least these outfits deserve a silent head shake in disapproval.

Starting off with a Taisuke wink isn’t too shabby.

All the movements in this PV are way too intense. They really need to tone it down a bit.

I think my favorite parts of Kisumai PVs is how they continue to not make it too obvious who the popular members are.

Unoriginal brown hair. And let me just say I doubt Hiro even knows who Slayer is let alone listen to them. Lol.

Reminds me so much of Arashi’s face down PV.

I really like Taisuke’s jacket. But in the sense that it would probably look better on me.

It also really reminds me of the jacket Hyunseung wore in the Troublemaker video.

This dance. It’s just so simple.

Like ridiculously simple.

Taisuke is trying way too hard in this PV.

I almost can’t believe some of these dance moves.

That duck face.

Yup, definitely trying too hard.

Is that a dinosaur on his shirt? Also, self panning shots are unoriginal.

Reminds me too much of Yamapi’s Hadakanbo PV.

The faces in this PV man.

Like seriously.

Poor Miyata, if he wasn’t in the drama he probably would have never gotten a line in the song.

I’m a sucker for idol winks.

What is Yoko doing? Lol.

Still think this dance is pretty ridiculous.

Family portrait. (Get it? Rocky Horror reference. XD )

Too intense man.

Wink.

Lol.

Through it all Tama still manages to look cute.

Ok then.

It’s backwards there Hiro.

Still reminds me of this.

Hiro’s face. Lol.

Kis-My-Ft2 – My Resistance Tashikana Mono preview

The full radio rip for Kisumai’s My Resistance Tashikana Mono off their upcoming double A-side new single, My Resistance Tashikana Mono / Unmei Girl, was just released. My Resistance will be used as the theme for Tamamori Yuta’s new drama Nobunaga no Chef.

When the song first started I knew I wasn’t going to like it very much. And, honestly, I’m still on the fence about the song. The song starts off with very soft piano music and accompanied with equally sad background music. The entire song sounds very emotional and sad. It’s times like this I wish I understood Japanese.

What I do find odd about this song is that Taisuke seems to be rapping through most of it. Not only does it not really fit with the sad music, you’d figure there would be a much bigger Yuta part in the song since it’s for his drama. I mean a good chunk of the song is Yuta. I mean, come on this is unfair Kisumai of course he’s prominent in the song. I was just expecting Yuta to sing 3/4 of the song.

Midway through the song the whole tempo and feel changes. Which is why I can’t really decide exactly how I feel about the song yet. The music becomes very upbeat and it sounds like the message changes from sad to positive, and maybe even inspiring. I don’t know, I feel like I really have to wait for a translation because this seems like one of those songs that will have great lyrics.

Anyway here’s the preview. My Resistance Tashikana Mono / Unmei Girl will be released on February 13th.

Recent thoughts about Johnny’s

In my opinion one of the most fun things to do when you’re an idol is to overanalyze and speculate about every detail of idols. Since my over-analyzations /predictions usually turn out to accurate it fuels the fire and makes me want to overanalyze things even more. Sure, there have been a few times I actually wish I wasn’t right. Like when I said Yamapi leaving wouldn’t be the end of NEWS, or when I said something wasn’t right with Arihara Kanna missing so many C-ute activities she had to be leaving soon. But just the same, it’s still fun to try to figure what’s going on, or to just think about what you wish would happen.

Lately I’ve been really thinking about things going on with Johnny’s. They were seemingly small little thoughts that I’ve just tweeted or posted on tumblr. Nothing really major. But writing my yearly ranking posts really sparked some new ideas that I wanted to talk about. None of them are big enough to get their own blog post alone, so I’m going to compile them together in one post.

1. The curious case of Nakayama Yuma:

It seems they never really knew what to do with Yuma from day 1. Nakayama Yuma was the most popular Kansai Junior, one of the most popular Juniors overall, and one of the most talented Juniors at singing. So, it was pretty obvious to the people that pulls the strings at Johnny’s that they didn’t want to waste him and could make money off of him. But it seems like they never had a clear image of what to do with him exactly. Which is why the whole Nakayama Yuma w/ B.I. Shadow and NYC Boys fiasco happened in the first place.

Nakayama Yuma w/ B.I. Shadow immediately says that Yuma is a solo artist and the other members are just singing with him. Kind of like Diana Ross & The Supremes. Because Yuma got all the lines and B.I. Shadow sang harmonies. So, why not just make him a solo artist to begin with? Or why didn’t they have Yuma and B.I. Shadow form a group with a new name and equal lines? If they did that I feel like Yuma would be in a better less confusing place right now. Obviously we all know that NYC dropped the Boys, shafting poor B.I. Shadow completely, and have been releasing singles since. Which is fine no big deal. Get all that gravy money from a group made up from one of the most popular Juniors and the 2 of the most popular Hey! Say! JUMP members.

But lately another confusing piece of the puzzle came into place, Yuma made his solo debut. Yuma sang the theme for his drama Piece and released the song as a single. Does this mean they are priming Yuma up to be a solo artist? They did release his solo song, Glassno Mahou, as another A-side with NYC’s Wonderful Cupid single. So, this could mean this was the plan for Yuma all along. Because right now since he’s only part of a sub-group and not an official group. He’s in the awkward situation of having nothing to do when NYC isn’t releasing anything. He’s in that Henry and Zhoumi from Super Junior M postion. (Yeah, it’s a Kpop reference, but I’m sure most of you get it.) And if he did go solo where does that leave NYC? Sure Yuma could handle being both solo and being in NYC. But I’m unsure if Ryosuke could handle it.
Which brings me to my next point,

2. Is the most popular member’s inevitable departure the new norm?:

As you’re all aware Hey! Say! JUMP member Yamada Ryosuke is making his solo debut by releasing the theme for his drama, Mystery Virgin, as a single. This makes me both very confused and worried about Hey! Say! JUMP. For the longest time if you were a Johnny’s idol in a drama or movie your group would 9/10 times sing the theme. Regardless if you were the most popular or least popular member. Mostly because Johnny’s uses their popularity and/or exposure as pretty much free extra promotion for the group they’re in. This format added countless of single sales to groups like NEWS and KAT-TUN. And helped Arashi’s popularity skyrocket.

But having 1 member of the group promote the single puts 3/4 of the attention and exposure to that individual alone. Besides the special group Shuji to Akira (and The Monsters), to my knowledge they’ve only done this once before and that was with Akanishi Jin’s Bandage single. Yes, they’ve also done this when Yamapi’s Daite Senorita was the theme for Kurosagi, but that obviously does not count since NEWS was on hiatus at the time. And if you recall when NEWS was off hiatus NEWS’s Taiyou no Namida was used as the theme for the Kurosagi movie.

But what’s the point of having Ryosuke release this solo single? Why isn’t it a Hey! Say! JUMP single? Especially since Hey! Say! JUMP released one single in 2012 all the way back in February. Sure maybe they want to gain more money since he’s the most popular member. But isn’t it enough extra money with him being in both NYC and Hey! Say! JUMP? And they would actually make more money releasing it as a Hey! Say! JUMP, or even NYC, single. Obviously mostly Ryosuke fans are going to buy a Ryosuke single. But fans of the other 8 members of Hey! Say! JUMP, or fans of the other 2 members of NYC, are going to buy the group’s single. Which would be an increase of anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 copies. So, what’s the point of him releasing a solo single? Surely this is stretching Ryosuke really thin. Being in 2 groups at once and releasing a solo single.

This is also going scarily into NEWS and Kanjani8 territory. If you’re an idol in 2 groups at once one of the groups always suffers. One group has to be more active than the other group so the idol who is in 2 groups isn’t too tired. NEWS seemed to always be on the short end of the stick. And this year Hey! Say! JUMP is. 3 NYC singles, 1 Yamada Ryosuke single announcement, (so close to being 2012) and 1 Hey! Say! JUMP single. And please don’t say, “well they were active because they released 1 single, 1 album, and 1 concert DVD.” That is not active, that’s a bad NEWS flashback. Before Ryo and Yamapi skedaddled from NEWS they released 1 single, 1 album, and 1 DVD that year. It’s so similar it’s creepy.

So, does this mean it’s simply the most popular member’s fate anymore to leave the group and go solo? Jin and Yamapi both did it. And Jin was the only one to decide on his own. Ryosuke said his solo single came as a surprise even to him, and Johnny set up Yamapi’s meeting with Warner Music while he was still in NEWS. While I don’t see Ryosuke, or even Chinen for that matter, leaving anytime soon I do still think it’s in the cards. Because don’t forget Ryo was a member of 2 groups for 7 years before he threw in the towel. Chinen and Ryosuke have only been doing it for 3 years. And it is slightly easier on them because NYC doesn’t have their own TV shows or concerts like Kanjani8 did. At least for now anyway.

3. What’s up with Bakaleya6?:

I’ve been wondering what’s up with Bakaleya6 for a while now. Bakaleya6 is obviously made up of the Johnny’s members, minus Takaki, who were in the Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou drama. It made sense to temporarily have these guys perform together on Shounen Club or appear together on variety shows while they are promoting the drama and movie. But the drama and movie came and went, but the group doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. They perform pretty much on every episode of Shounen Club, occasionally on Yan Yan JUMP, are lumped together in all the idol magazines, appear on more variety shows, half of them were in a Baskin Robins commercial, and some of the members are getting additional drama work. Drama work while you’re still a Junior is pretty rare. You either only get extremely small roles, or you have to be an extremely popular Junior to get a lead role. Bakaleya6 also has their own special performance at Hey! Say! JUMP’s Jump World concert and introduced Hey! Say! JUMP in the beginning of the concert. They even headlined their own summary concerts.

While I think all that is obviously awesome for them, I still can’t help but wonder what the plans for this group are. Bakaleya6 is made up of some of the most popular current Juniors, so it makes sense to keep them together as long as possible. But then why not have them debut, or at the very least make them an official Johnny’s Junior group? Currently none of them are in Junior groups. Juri and Jesse used to be in Hip Hop Jump before they disbanded. Taiga hasn’t been in a group since Kitty Jr, Shintaro hasn’t been in a group since he was in Snow Prince Gasshoudan, and Hokuto and Yugo were left groupless after Sexy Zone’s formation completely broke up B.I. Shadow. So, it makes perfect sense for them to make one. In idol magazines you have seen Bakaleya Gumi written under their names, but you never see anything written on Shounen Club.

I honestly don’t see why they are keeping them together unless they have something planned for them. In a perfect world that would be a major debut. Personally that’s what I’m hoping for. A lot of fans say that it’s impossible because the group is too new. And I honestly think that’s ridiculous. Just because groups like KAT-TUN and Kis-My-Ft2 were Junior groups for like 6 years before debuting doesn’t mean that’s the norm. Most of these Juniors have been members of Johnny’s since the members of Hey! Say! JUMP joined Johnny’s. And sometimes that doesn’t even matter. Tegoshi was only a Junior for something like 8 months before his debut and Marius wasn’t a Junior for that long either. (I have no idea the actual amount of time though. XD)

I actually think having the members debut as a group makes sense since they are well known and popular members. It would be a much more calculated debut than Sexy Zone. Besides Fuma and Kento the members of Sexy Zone were pretty unheard of before the group was announced.

Johnny’s Countdown 2012-2013

Well, I want to start off by saying Happy New Year my dear readers! And nothing brings in the New Year quite like the Johnny’s Countdown. As I’ve said before the Johnny’s Countdown is one of, if not the, most exciting part of being a Johnny’s fan. It’s seriously a highlight of my year. Most idol agencies usually have their idols come together frequently. They have jointed concerts, have TV shows together, or at least perform together on TV. But Johnny’s only ever comes together once a year. (Obviously excluding charity events.) And the Countdown holds a special place because if it wasn’t for the Countdown I’d probably still only be a NEWS fan right now.

I actually always wanted to makes these overview posts of the Countdown to be a yearly tradition on my blog, but last year I was unable to find a decent quality of the concert. I had some trouble this year as well. I almost had to 86 this entire post. But I luckily I found one, and here we are.

It seems like KinKi Kids are hosting again. Which doesn’t really bother me. I just wish Arashi wasn’t stretched too thin with Kohaku and could host it again.

I should really go back and listen to some of Matchy’s songs. He has a really good voice.

It’s weird to see Tackey & Tsubasa together. How come Tackey isn’t in the theater again this year?

Adorable Koki.

I hate that Hey! Say! JUMP are wearing their Boku wa Vampire outfits. I’ve never really care for them.

Why are they having Uchi stand next to Yamapi as if he’s a soloist too? I only point this out because, remember how everyone knew that Kis-My-Ft2 was going tomake their major debut because of how much they were being treated like a legit group instead of just Juniors? I wonder if this means a solo debut is in the cards? He has been doing his thing with Question for a while. And said he would love to debut again with them.

It just wouldn’t feel like a Johnny’s if the outfits weren’t so hideous so, over designed, and so brimming with blinding sequins that you wanted to punch the costume designer on the face.

I’m happy. Venus is probably my favorite Tackey & Tsubasa single.

That awkward moment when Tackey & Tusbasa are making your song more entertaining just by dancing then by you singing. Sorry Yamapi.

Can this even count as a debut? Since A.B.C-Z released this and nothing else since.

It’s cool that they had JUMP Band, but because of that you literally didn’t see any of the band members besides Keito.

Sexy Zone’s performance was hilarious. It was like, “Enjoy Sexy Zone, but please overlook the fact that only 1/5 of them is old enough to actually perform tonight.”

I really like KAT-TUN’s jackets. They have the least embarrassing outfits in the entire concert.

Wow, Taguchi looks really good here.

Happy New Year!

Keito looking good.

I love how they brought out all the rappers for this song. But Koki easily blows them away. I always thought Hikaru and Taisuke were kinda bad at rapping.

I haven’t seen Yuto tap in a while.

People said Arashi’s segment is prerecorded this year. Doesn’t really bother me. On a side not, I’m officially used to Nino’s hair.

Lolz at Nino’s face.

Yabu is such a cutie.

Really wish I could see the Juniors better. I can clearly see that Kochi Yugo, Sanada Yuma, and Yasui Kentaro are there but that’s it. I just want to know if my beloved Taiga is there.

Wow, this is really awesome.

Fumikyun managing to stand out.

Wow, I have no idea who any of the Kansai Juniors are.

Yes! They’re performing Aoppana. I was actually upset they didn’t perform it at Kohaku.

I’m so Ryo-chan deprived lately. I really need to get into Kanjani8 more.

Ryo literally almost fell here.

Rysouke looking as gorgeous as ever.

Tegoshi looks girly enough already, does he really need to keep doing his hair this way?

I’ve never heard V6’s Rock Your Soul before, but it’s seriously a great song.

Here’s the first part of the concert. This person does have the entire concert. But I didn’t want to put 10 videos on the bottom of this post. I suggest you watch it quickly before it gets take down.

Best Album Songs of 2012

Going right along with my ranking extravaganza is the final installment: Best Album Songs of 2012.

This was yet another extremely difficult think to rank. Not quite as hard as ranking singles, but definitely a close second. I think there were a lot of great albums released this year. Like really great albums.I would even label 4 or 5 of them as perfect albums.
Yet again all my favorite idol groups released an album. I shouldn’t say yet again as most idol groups release an album a year. But whatever.

Oh also, I really wanted to include the solos from NEWS’ best album. But I didn’t because even though that album was released this year the songs are years old. You know if I could have included them Shige’s Shalala Tambourine would have been really close to the top of the list.

Well, I won’t prelong this anymore. Here we go!

10. Mano Erina – Glory Days

I think every H!P fan was in love with this song when they randomly uploaded it to ManoEri’s youtube page. I know I was, I literally could not get enough of this song since then. I was super impressed by this entire album. It really was ManoEri’s best album. Lately her music was just flawless. Which really adds salt to her still fresh graduation wounds. I literally do not want her to leave now. It’s funny how just 2 or 3 years ago, I would have laughed at her leaving. This song is really incredible. The music is very intense and the slight effects they do on her voice fit it perfectly and add a nice element to the song. ManoEri sounds just perfect in this song. It doesn’t sound like she’s forcing her voice out.

9. KAT-TUN – One Day

In the past I never really gave KAT-TUN’s albums much of a chance because I personally thought they were terrible. But they’ve really picked it up over the past few years. And anymore I go out of my way to listen to their albums. And this album was just incredible, in my opinion it’s their best album to date. I of course love the dance feel of the music, but it has this interesting sound where it’s like a mix between dance and rock music. My absolute favorite part of the song is the chorus, it’s just so powerful and catchy.

8. C-ute – Kagayake! Houkago

If you would have told me last year that a Nacky solo would make it onto my list I wouldn’t believe you. Mostly because I don’t really care for her voice so much, she has one of the weaker voices in C-ute. But I’ve been absolutely in love with this song since I first heard it. And seeing her perform it when they live streamed C-ute’s concert, just really confirmed my love for it. It’s just such a happy and fun song. And one of those songs that are so upbeat that really forget about everything for a minute and are completely lost in the song.

7. Hey! Say! JUMP – Thumb & Pinky

This song came so close to be beaten out by Hurry Up. I’ve been addicted to, and have been listening to, Hurry Up practically nonstop for months. But I’ve been doing the same with this song. But when it came to the best song on the album it became obvious that I had to pick this one. It’s another song that was written by Hikaru, and you can immediately tell because it’s arranged extremely similarly to Ai Scream. But that’s what I love about this song. All of the background calls and sound effects are a big part of what makes this song so fun and catchy. I especially love Daiki’s random yell. Of course I also love the energetic music and the fast paced way that the song is. I also appreciate how this is one of the only songs on the album where you actually hear everyone sing.

6. SUPER GiRLS – Zettai Jibun Zenshin Sengen

This is a song I love because it’s the same idol fare that I absolutely adore. It’s sung cutely and the music is fun and energetic. What more can you really ask for from idol music? Not only is that song amazing, but the album as a whole was. It was really difficult to pick just one song. But ultimately this song one because of it’s infectious chorus.

5. Yamashita Tomohisa – Shiver

I have to say that I am extremely late in listening to Yamapi’s album. Since I’m not a gigantic fan of his I only heard his Ero album because I watched the concert DVD. And I’m starting to think that that’s a mistake, because this album was spectacular. 100 times better than I was expecting. One of the reasons I love this song is the gritty rock feel the music and the way its sung has. The music also reminds me Puffy AmiYumi music mixed with just great rock music in general. But of course the most obvious reason for loving this song is that it’s sung completely in English. And I am actually really impressed with Yamapi’s English. I can understand it 100%, and that really is saying something. Because despite being in America for months Jin’s English is still hard to understand. Remind me again why Jin is trying to break into the US and not Yamapi? Because this seriously blows any of Jin’s English song way out of the water. Besides it being English the song is extremely catchy in its own right. I immediately rewatched this performances about 4 or 5 times.

4. Morning Musume – Dokka~n Capriccio

What immediately drew me to this song is that is has the same spirit and sounds as their 12th album. This song is very similar to Ok Yeah. And that’s exactly what I love about it. It’s got that wonderful and really powerful dance music. The song is so intense and catchy that’s it’s impossible to not like it. The song leaves and incredibly deep impression and it really demands attention. Especially when the music booms after they say dokkan. I really love this song. It’s one of those songs that I could listen to for hours without getting bored.

3. AKB48 – Iede no Yoru

What I love about this song is that it sounds very powerful while still having that unique AKB48 sound. The song as a whole is very passionate and very inspiring actually. And it has a real roughness to it that you don’t immediately expect from AKB48. Well, from their singles anyway.I really love that the song is about leaving home even though they have no where to go, just to be free. I’m just really drawn to those lyrics. They’re amazing in my opinion.

2. Passpo – Dear My Friends

This is just a perfect song in my opinion. Passpo is one of those idol groups that very rarely disappoint. And when you listen to the One World album you’ll hear just how strong of a group they are. It was so hard to narrow it down to just one song. But I ultimately picked it because of how at the same time it was both intense but still fun. Which isn’t really an easy thing to do, but Passpo pulls it off with such seamless ease. This song is just so powerful that it’s beautiful. It really is just a beautiful song. And my girl Shiori sounds absolutely incredible in this song. It just seems so effortless and natural. When I listen to Passpo’s songs, especially their album songs, I’m just reminded of how much of a travesty it is that they sell so low.

1. Arashi – Welcome to Our Party

This song, OMG this song! You cannot imagine how hard it is to put into words how much I love this song. I love absolutely everything about this song. It is absolutely perfect in every single way. No, seriously it is. Can I just start by saying Popcorn was an absolutely amazing album. It was one of their best albums to date. It just has that fun-loving old school Arashi feel. This song is everything great about Arashi rolled into one. What I really love about this song is it has a very Attack It feel. In the sense that all the members are rapping just like in Attack It. And I’m not sure if my readers know this, but Attack It is one of my absolute favorite Arashi songs. What else is great about this song is how energetic and fun this song is. I mean, this song literally grabs you by your shoulders, shakes you, and demands that you party. I implore anyone who is not an Arashi fan to listen to this song, you will not regret it. This song is just so addicting and catchy from basically the first note.

Worst Singles of 2012

Continuing with my yearly ranking extravaganza we’ll find out the same thing we find out most years, Aim doesn’t like slow songs. But on a more serious note, this was literally the hardest year to pick a top ten worst single list. Most years I have a somewhat clear idea of what singles I didn’t enjoy that much and I only have to scramble to pick the last song or two. But this year it was completely different. I only had about 3 songs this year that I knew for a fact I just didn’t care for that much. And this year I was frantically trying to think of about 7 songs to pick.

I know I say this every year that I don’t really hate any idol song, and the worst of the year list aren’t songs I hate just my least favorite songs. Well, that sentence has never been more true. This year I had to pick songs that were in the middle for me because barely any songs this year dipped lower than a 5/10 for me this year. In my opinion, this was a really spectacular year for idol music. Or maybe I was incredibly lucky and it was just a great year for the type of idol music I like. Either way, this year in music was just great, which made things a hundred times more difficult for me. If you ever get personally offended with my lists for worst songs because your favorite song is on the list, well this year you’re in luck because I don’t consider most of these songs to be deserving of the worst label. So you don’t have to say I have horrible taste in music. Well, you don’t have to think that anyway. I say think because no one has ever literally commented on my year ranking posts and said that. But I’m sure at least some of you may have been thinking it.
10. Momoiro Clover Z – Saraba, Itoshiki Kanashimi-tachi yo

This song is number 10 because I’m walking a thin line between liking this song and not liking it at all. The song itself isn’t completely awful. In fact if it was done by any other group I probably would have liked it more. But when it comes to MomoClo I expect over the top energetic and cutesy music from them. This song just feels too mature for them. Or rather it’s just not the music I personally prefer to hear from them. It’s the same reason why I never really liked Roudou Sanka. The chorus is still a little catchy and there are some cool effects done tot heir voices, but the song just isn’t for me.

9. Berryz Koubou – Be Genki Naseba Naru!

This is one of those songs I just did not like at all when I first heard it. I just thought all the nai nais were pretty annoying. And I think the bridge sounds completely awkward. The way that it slows down and turns into this weird fanciful music just sounds really out of place. The one thing I always did like about the song was the chorus.I think the chorus is fun and catchy. It’s really about the only redeeming quality of this song. Because honestly this song sounds more like 3 different songs pieced together than one complete song. And I think the lyrics are quite stupid. The entire song just lists things that you shouldn’t do or shouldn’t let happen. Like sleeping during examsor leaving your wallet in the taxi. I think those are all pretty obvious things and don’t really need a song written about them.

8. Mano Erina – Tasogare Kousaten

I’ve said it once I’ll say it again, I am not a fan of slow paced songs or ballads. I don’t know, I just need a fast paced song to hold my interest. And that’s of course what I don’t really like about this song. I’m sure it’s pretty in its own way, but I just find it boring. Which is a problem I’ve had with ManoEri since the beginning. How ironic that her music finally starts to get good an she’s graduating. For me to like a slower song the lyrics have to be really beautiful and meaningful, and I feel like this song also misses the mark. While this song does have some meaning, something about painting their future in the blue sky and always shining by the same light. But I’ve heard tons of songs like that before. It’s just not enough for me.

7. Kis-My-Ft2 – She! Her! Her!

I was never this song’s biggest fan when it first came out, and that has changed much over this past year. Especially since the other songs they released this year were a lot better than this one. There are a few reasons why I don’t like this song, the first being how annoying the random she her her chants are. First of all, they don’t match the flow of the rest of the song. And second of all, she her her doesn’t have an actual meaning. I also think that the amount of English in this song makes it sound pretty awkward. The song itself is mediocore at best and barely good enough to be an A-side.

6. AKB48 – Give Me Five

When this song first came out there was a bit of commotion about it because they were playing instruments. At least I think they were actually playing them during the lives. Whatever the case may be, I just do not like this song. I think it’s boring and it didn’t take any risks at all. It feels like one of those songs that AKB48 makes that they don’t even try with because they know whatever they produce will sell well just because of who they are. Also, it is yet another graduation song. I get that there have been a lot of Japanese graduation songs out there, (personally I think ZONE’s Sotsugyou and Buono’s Last Forever are some of my favorites.) and idols in general make a lot of gradution songs, but this is literally like the 6th graduation themed single AKB48 has released in their career. It’s boring, it’s just absolutely boring. I really don’t need to hear yet another graduation single from them. Please stick with the cheesy idol songs I love.

5. Arashi – Your Eyes

Slow idol songs bore me to no end, but no slow idol songs bore me quite like Arashi’s slow songs do. And the reason for that is anymore all of their slow songs from 2010-present day sound exactly the same and have nearly the same lyrical content. Where are Arashi’s slow songs that lyrically made up for it being so slow paced?Your Eyes is definitely no Beautiful Days were the lyrics are so heartfelt and beautiful that you could tear up listening to it. The absolute only thing this song has going for it is how the chorus sounds. The chorus is actually really great. It has like this rock sound to it and it’s completely catchy. However, once the song switches over from the chorus to the verse it loses all its appeal. The verse is sung so monotonically and the music is so simple and soft, that it literally sounds like they are speaking over light music rather than singing a song.

4. Passpo – Kimi wa Boku wo Suki ni Naru

I was completely underwhelmed by this song the very moment it came out. And unlike most of the other songs on this list, I haven’t really grown to like it. I think this is not only Passpo’s weakest singles to date, but one of their weakest songs overall. I mean, their entire indie album is better than this song. The entire song just sounds so stale. It’s way too toned down for Passpo. I expect either happy upbeat pop-rock or intense serious rock from them. Either way I expect a song that leaves a deep impression. And this song, sadly, just isn’t it. It’s not a terrible song, I feel like there could be occasions where you’re in the mood to hear this song. But for me those time are few and far. To me the song is boring and doesn’t push things far enough. They played it way too safe with this single.

3. Watanabe Mayu – Otona Jelly Beans

This song had all the elements for a great song going for it. Mayu’s adorable voice and very cutesy and fanciful music. However, there’s just something about the song that I just don’t like. To me the song is just boring and doesn’t leave a deep impression at all. I also find the lyrics to be mediocore at best. It’s about wanting a kiss on the first date and for some reason eating jelly beans. It’s also supposed to be about having an adult birthday. So, I guess the jelly beans are supposed to represent that she’s still innocent even though she wants to be an adult. That’s what I got from it at least. Regardless, there’s just something about this song I don’t really care for.

2. NMB48 – Junjou U-19

When this song came out I was so impressed with it. I thought the song had a great instrumental and it was extremely catchy. I even loved how elaborate, interesting, and fun the PV was. So, naturally once I saw someone had subbed the PV I was really excited to find out what the song was about. And once I finally understood the lyrics of the song I was completely turned off. The entire theme of the song is a girl wanting to wait until she’s 19 to lose her virginity. And that she doesn’t want to become an adult too quickly so let her stay pure a little longer. The entire song is catering to the fanbase that gets off on their idols being virginal and untouched. While that itself doesn’t really bother me because every idol group has this type of fanbase. Even male idol fans have something vaguely similar to this. Male idol fans seem to be delusional and convince themselves that idols in their mid-20’s, or ones pushing 30, are still virgins despite being photographed with girlfriends. Another slice of male idol fans have even been brazen enough to start petitions for their idols to break up with their girlfriends. (I’ve actually only seen this happen once, but once was enough to be honest.) I accept that both of these fanbases exist and are a huge chunk of who buys their music and merch, and therefore keep my favorite idols going. But I’m also not here for either of those fanbases, so this particular song is lost on me. I still do listen to this song occasionally because it is still a catchy song. It’s just not, and never will be, one of my favorites.

1. NYC – Wonderful Cupid

This song, this song! Listen to this song once and you’ll clearly see why it’s the perfect choice for number one. I have a real indifference to NYC, so it’s natural for me to have bad things to say about their songs initially. With most of NYC’s singles I usually hate them at first, but slowly realize that they’re actually great songs. Especially with Haina. When Haina came out I literally though, “This is terrible. What garbage are they trying to push on me now?” But after hearing it about 15-20 times I actually really love the song. Funny how that happens, right? But with Wonderful Cupid there is absolutely nothing to love. The song is so slow and boring that it sounds like a lullaby. No wonder it put me to sleep. It seems like the whole reason that NYC continued in the first place was to release singles so Hey! Say! JUMP could mature as a group. Since Hey! Say! JUMP used to be both the newest group and the group with the youngest members some of their songs for a while seemed to cater to not only Johnny’s usual niche market of teenage girls but the children market as well. Which is why to this day you see children at their concerts. I mean, at the end of Hey! Say! JUMP’s JUMP World concert DVD they thanked all the parents in the child-parent seats.
It’s obvious that Wonderful Cupid is marketed for children, which is a main factor of why I dislike the song so much. It’s too immature for me. I frequently listen to idol songs from girls who are or were 15 years old or younger in the song. But the difference there is even though they were children at the time the songs aren’t children’s songs. C-ute’s Massara Blue Jeans is more mature than this song!

Best Singles of 2012

I’m kicking things off in my annual best and worst ranking extravaganza, with my personal favorite ranking: Top Ten Best Singles of 2012.

2012 has been quite an eventful year in my personal life with tons of ups and downs, and some outright devastation. It really was a year that I won’t soon forget. And like most years it feels like it was over in a blink of the eye. I could have sworn that just yesterday it was only March or June. With this year coming to a close we can also finally say that we’ve successfully survived our 3rd apocalypse. Well, 3 in my lifetime anyway. I don’t know how many you dear readers have been alive for. And personally I get to stop hearing my dad saying it’ll all be over on December 21st. Literally for the entire year whenever something didn’t go his way or anyone in my family complained about anything he would legit say,”What does it matter anyway? You only have to the 21st.” But I digress.

2012 also marked yet another exciting roller coaster ride that is being an idol fan. One filled with more joy and heartbreak than you could really count or really measure. Personally for me the highs were: 1. the addition of Morning Musume’s 10th and 11th gen. 2. The first NEWS singles after Yamapi and Ryo left signaling that there was no stopping them. 3. My favorite Johnny’s Junior Kyomoto Taiga’s drama debut. And that the drama gave them an excuse for him to spam Shounen Club even more than usual. 3. Morning Musume selling 100,000 singles for the first time in like 8 years or more. (Obviously not counting commemorative 40th and 50th singles.) 4. MomoClo performing at Kohaku for the first time. I’m so proud of my girls. It just shows how their popularity keeps increasing.

And my personal lows were: 1. My beloved Mitsui Aika graduating from Morning Musume. 2. The cancellation of Himitsu no Arashi-chan. While I do agree the Arashi Sharehouse segment was boring, I don’t think they needed to lose the whole show. Especially since that means no more manequin 5. 3. Hello!ProTime ending. I still don’t get the point of this one. I’ve said it a hundred times now, but that was H!P’s most interesting show in years.

2012 was also a year filled with great idol music. I don’t know if it was the best year in terms of music in idol history since I’ve only been a serious idol fan since 2007. But at the very least I personally think the music released this year was better than the music released last year. And that is so exciting. It’s like further confirming why being an idol fan is worth every second of ups and downs.

So, without further ado let’s just get to the ranking already. Which by the way, was incredibly easy to pick this year. With so many great songs released this year it was very obvious which singles were the very best.

10. NMB48 – Kitagawa Kenji

This is a song that was hard to pick. Not only was it hard to pick because it’s the last song I could add to my ranking, but it was pretty difficult to pick between this song and Nagiichi. But in the end I picked this based on lyrics. While Nagiichi is catchy I wouldn’t say a song about the cutest girl on the beach is one of my favorites this year. However, the lyrics to KItagawa Kenji are completely adorable. While I don’t think I’ll ever personally be in a situation where I’m fighting a guy for a girl’s heart, especially since this song is most likely sung from a guy’s point of view, I do think the lyrics are cute. It’s so sweet that the person in this song is jealous and won’t lose to their current significant other’s past lover. But my absolute favorite part is the last line that says thanks to Kitagawa Kenji you became this beautiful. That is such a sweet, if not a little cheesy, and beautiful line. Of course the extremely catchy chorus also adds for my love of the song. I don’t know for some reason I just love singing along to the look at part.

9. Not Yet – Sukina Baby

Have you noticed a theme with this ranking already? What can I say, pretty much every idol song I like sounds exactly the same. Happy, upbeat, energetic, and super positive. If it didn’t sound like that idol groups would be no different from any other music out there. And of course that’s what’s great about this song. It’s sugary sweet sound with cutesy lyrics is absolutely addicting. This song would probably be higher on the list if the girls didn’t force their voices to sound cute at times. I really love the lyrics though. I think the whole story line of holding a candle for a childhood friend is incredibly cute and endearing. It’s also a little bit bittersweet.

8. KAT-TUN – To The Limit

This is Johnny’s song I love this year because they returned to their old sound. In KAT-TUN’s case they returned to not only their older sound but their original sound. Once Jin left the group KAT-TUN’s music continued to get heavier and they seemed to experament with different genres. To be honest their music without Jin is about 50 times better than the music with Jin. Their songs this year were so good it was hard to pick between this and Fumetsu no Scrum. But in the end this won because of how heavy it is and how gruffly it’s sung. I also appreciate the amount of Koki in this song. But as I’ve said before this song is just phenomonal. The chorus is sung so intensely and with so much power, it’s just really great. The lyrics are also just as intense

7. SUPER GiRLS – Puri Puri Summer Kiss

This is a song that I unfortunately have’t been unable to find the translation to. But that doesn’t really stop me from loving every minute of this song. Oh SUPER GiRLS borrowing the most popular elements of the most well known idol groups out their to form a pretty solid group on their own. This time it was a summer song for a shameless bikini PV. While idol groups release these songs & videos in the hopes of selling more singles, I do enjoy every minute of these songs. The songs are almost always exclusively about summer love and because of that the songs are always extremely fun and happy, this song included. As soon as the song starts it already sounds like an explosion of energy and cutesy idol music. The lyrics are kind of simple so that even with my poor Japanese skills I can translate roughly about 1/2 of the song. They seem to just be saying what they’re doing at the beach. Regardless of whatever they are actually saying the song is fun and adorable.

6. Arashi – Wild At Heart

I was absolutely in love with this song from the first moment I heard it. I just love the overall sound of this song. It has that same sillyness and energy as songs they released in past. It has a real Kitto Daijoubu mixed with Happiness feel. It’s a welcomed change from the somewhat serious songs they’ve been releasing for the past few years. The lyrics themselves are cheerful and somewhat uplifting. It’s a song about not being afraid of living in the moment. To just throw away trouble and worries and just roll with the punches. They’re not so inspiring that you’ll burst into tears, but they’re cute and I can see listening to this song when you need some encouragement. Personally, I’ve pretty much always taken this carefree approach to life. So, the song really resonates with me.

5. Momoiro Clover Z – Moretsu Uchu Kokyokyoku Dai 7 Gakusho ‘Mugen no Ai’

MomoClo is one of those groups I love for how energetic they are. Now, this song doesn’t have the same energetic flare as their past songs, but I love it because of the heavy rock music. It still makes me laugh that the dude from Megadeth did the guitar work. The song also still retains that same personality and charm that is MomoClo. But I mostly love this song because I’m a pretty big space nerd (and alien nerd. XD) so I love all the space and star references in the song and PV. It also helps that the song is incredibly catchy. I also love the choir in the background doing the harmonies. It gives the song a very elaborate and dramatic feel.

4. Passpo – Wing

I actually haven’t been able to find a translation of this song, so my love for this song is only based on the overall sound alone. I really love how this year Passpo’s singles have had a more hard rock feel to them. Passpo’s past songs have had more of a pop-rock sound. But this year it actually sounds like I’m listening to a Jrock band instead of an idol group. And since I’m a big Jrock fan that’s just perfect to me. And this song is the song they’ve released his year that has the most distinct Jrock sound. I mean, this song is having like an Alice Nine moment. It’s absolutely fantastic. And my god Ai and Shiori sound incredible in this song. It’s like this song was made perfectly for just their voices.

3. Kanjani8 – Aopanna

I really need to get over my love-hate relationship with Kanjani8, because their music is actually really great. But since I’m such a casual fan of them I tend to overlook their music until months after it’s released. And I do admit since Ai Deshita was a little boring I didn’t really bother with them this year. And that was obviously a mistake because this song is amazing. It’s got that upbeat music I love sprinkled with a little bit of weirdness that I’ve come to expect from Kanjani8. What immediately draws me to this song is the ska beat. Ska is a genre that I wasn’t really familiar with a few years ago, but ska music is really upbeat and fun. It almost sounds like tropical music. But what makes me really love the song is the lyrics. Despite the chorus being about snot it’s oddly uplifting. It’s about treasuring the past and to never stop trying to achieve your old dreams, while continuing to have that innocent spirit of your youth. It’s actually really pretty and sentimental.

2. Morning Musume – One-Two-Three

From the moment that they first performed this song at Girls Award 2012, I’ve been absolutely addicted to it. Since their 10th album had some great electronic songs, and even before that because I still don’t understand why SONGS wasn’t a single, I’ve been wishing for them to release an electronic song as a single. While their electronic effects may have been a little heavy handed this year I still think One-Two-Three is an amazing song. The instrumental stands alone as an incredible dance track. That mixed with just the right amount of auto-tuning makes for an incredibly fun and catchy song. The lyrics themselves are another reason why I love the song. I think they are adorable. I like that it’s about a girl not wanting fancy gifts just having love is enough. It’s sappy and overly sweet, just up my ally.

1. SKE48 – Aishiteraburu

This is actually the second year in a row that SKE48 has come in first place. Despite being lazy and hardly ever getting around to reviewing their PVs, I actually really love SKE48’s music. As I’ve mentioned before on my blog, for the last few years in my opinion SKE48’s music has been better than AKB48’s. I love this song because of how positive the song is. The second the song starts it’s already overflowing with energy. The infectious upbeat music makes it impossible to not crack a smile while listening to. It’s songs like this that make me continue to listen to idol music. It’s carefree happy music like this that is pretty much unique to idol music. The lyrics might be a little cheesy being about summer love, which is probably one of the most cliched story lines in pop music history. But at least for me the happy and uplifting lyrics add to the charm of the song.

And as always here are my Honorable Mentions:

1. Berryz Koubou – Cha Cha Sing
2. NEWS – Chankapana
3. AKB48 – Gingham Check
4. DIY – Forest For Rest
5. YuiKaori – Wake Up
6. Arashi – Face Down
7. S/mileage – Chotto Matte Kudasai
8. Buono – Hatsukoi Cider
9. Hey! Say! JUMP – Super Delicate
10. Kis-My-Ft2 – Wanna Beeee
11. Kis-My-Ft2 – Shake It Up
12. Berryz Koubou and C-ute – Cho Happy Song
13. Mano Erina – Song For The Date

KAT-TUN to release new single

It was recently announced that KAT-TUN will be releasing a new single.  The new single is entitled Fumetsu no Scrum and will be released on September 12th. Fumetsu no Scrum  will also be the theme song to Yasuda Shota’s drama Dragon Seinendan. And if that wasn’t enough the first press regular edition will come with a Tanaka Koki solo song and solo PV. But KAT-TUN fans don’t need to worry, because other members will get their own solos and PVs in future KAT-TUN releases.

Can I just say, I am super excited. Not so much about a new KAT-TUN single really, but the fact that Koki gets to start this off with his solo and PV. I think I’ve mentioned a few hundred times on this blog that Koki is my absolute favorite KAT-TUN member, and pretty high on my overall Johnny’s ranking. So, of course I’m happy about this. Fellow Koki fans, let us rejoice now.

I really wanna know what song it’s going to be. Koki currently has 2 unreleased solos: Anarchist and Shorty. But people are saying it’s a new song. It’s really anyone’s guess at this point. And my got if it’s another Make U Wet song I’m gonna be angry. I love Koki and all, but I hate those songs. They try so hard to be hot with oversexualized lyrics, but they’re actually awful. And hilarious and embarrassing to be honest. I actually wouldn’t mind if it was Anarchist. Just because I actually like that song, and I don’t really like the other one.

Kis-My-Ft2-Wanna Beeee PV preview

Recently the short version for Kisumai’s PV Wanna Beeee was released. Wanna Beee is from Kisumai’s upcoming double A-side 4th single, Wanna Beeee/Shake It Up, which will be released on August 18th.

I have to say, so far, this looks like Kisumai’s best PV yet. Avex seems to really give Kisumai a fairly large budget. With each release the PVs keep getting more elaboration and jut plain better. The theme for the PV is pretty simple: the members of Kis-My-Ft2 are looking for buried treasure. But it’s all the little details the make the PV look amazing. The sets are really well made, and at times over decorated which makes the overall PV extremely eye catching. I just think pirate themed PV are really cool. An Cafe just had their pirate themed Amazing Blue, which was equally awesome.

Even thought the full version of the PV is probably only another 2 minutes max, I’m still looking forward to see the finished results.

KAT-TUN-To The Limit PV preview

The PV preview for KAT-TUN’s new single, To The Limit, is out.

I am absolutely in love with this song and I am also pleasantly surprised that the PV matches up to the amazingness of the song. It’s not the type of PV you really expect from an idol group. It’s not even the type of PV you’d expect after hearing the song. But at the same time I think it really works. There’s a lot of effort put into this PV. It seems to have a big budget and a clear storyline. And it’s so different from past KAT-TUN PVs. KAT-TUN usually has pretty decent PVs, but they hardly ever have storylines.

The previews so far show the members of KAT-TUN all being in a bank during a robbery. Kame, Maru, and Koki work there, while Taguchi and Ueda are hostages. It’s a bit of a darker theme compared to the realativly happy or mature PVs KAT-TUN usually makes. And I’m assuming the lyrics of the song work well with the theme. Since they’re most likely about being stretched to the limit in some way. But I don’t speak Japanese, so I have no idea.

The only drawback of this PV are that it’s probably supposed to be taken more seriously then it seems. There are parts of this PV that I can’t help think are adorable or hilarious. Which probably wasn’t the intention at all. Also, I kind of wish Koki worked in the bank itself instead of being a security guard. Him in a suit and glasses would have been pretty sexy. Ridiculous hair or not.

Yamapi-Love Chase PV preview

The PV preview for Yamapi’s 2nd solo single since leaving NEWS, Love Chase, has recently been released.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s hilarious how little effort is being put into Yamapi’s career post NEWS. Well, PV wise anyway. I don’t care enough to know if he’s doing concerts or appearances. He leaves NEWS just to have this medicore solo career. And it’s not even like he’s doing more once he left NEWS. His solo singles are being released just as frequently as when he was a part of NEWS, and he was in a drama. Pretty much just like he would be doing with NEWS. Sorry, but I’ll never stop being bitter about this.

But moving on to the topic at hand, I have to admit I actually do like his solo singles. But it’s more of a love/hate thing. His singles are really danceable and catchy. However, no matter how much he’s been pushing himself into the role, his voices has never suited dance music. He’s better suited for soft ballads. So, he’s in this weird place where the overall sound of his music is good but he’s voice sounds out of place. At least for me anyway.

And his PVs aren’t much better. This PV so far looks just awful. It’s basically nothing but Yamapi dancing in different outfits, sometimes with a girl, on a plain gray backdrop. Really cutting edge there Warner. There is absolutely no effort in this PV at all. It seems like the director is just hoping you won’t care boring the PV is and just focus on the fact that there’s 3 Yamapi’s.

And I might me able to if his new haircut wasn’t so hideous. It looks fine went it’s styled a bit, but when it’s just laying flat it’s terrible. And the outfits he’s wearing aren’t helping much either. One of them looks like he’s ready to play golf or teach high school English. The other one is him in a trenchcoat. Which is ridiculous because no one wears them indoors unless they’re Columbo. And the last outfit is supposed to be the idol outfit for the fans. Since he’s wearing an effeminate parka and a skin tight shirt. Which I do admit I kind of like. Except for the ripped pants.

I’ve just so over Yamapi to be honest. When he was in NEWS he was never anything more than the guy who could sing and was eyecandy. That hasn’t really changed much now, except you add the animosity I still have towards him.

KAT-TUN-To The Limit preview

A preview for KAT-TUN’s upcoming new single, To The Limit, was recently aired on Kame’s radio show.

Anyone and everyone who happens to be reading this post absoultely MUST listen to this radio rip, whether you’re a KAT-TUN or male idol fan or not. This is by far the greatest KAT-TUN singles I’ve ever heard. And it’s easily one of their best, if not the best, songs period. I have listened to this song about 15 times now. I litererally cannot express in words just how completely phenomenal this song is. I mean, the song is so intense that at one point in the song Koki actually says fucking my mind. Now, normally that would be hilarious, but for some reason it actually works in this song.

If I was to describe this song it’s like old school rockish KAT-TUN, but a hundred times better. It’s like if you somehow mixed Real Face, Gold, Taboo, Lips, and Don’t You Ever Stop and played them simultaneously. The song is just absoultely incredible. It just has this amazing blarring rock music but still sort of heavy dance music mixed in at the same time. I have never been this impressed with a KAT-TUN song ever.

I also really love the way it’s sung. Most of the verse is rapping. But it’s not the usual just Koki rapping. Of course Koki does lead the rapping, but everyone else is also rapping. Which actually sounds better than you would expect. Especially since Koki always tries to get the members to rap in concert and only Taguchi could ever really keep up. But of course like most songs the best part is the chorus, but not really by much because the verse and bridge are seriosuly just as good. It’s just that the chorus is sung extremely powerfully. It’s just just amazing. And it sounds like Koki has some solos in the chorus which is amazing. Featuring Koki so much in the song really adds a nice roughness and gruffness to the song. And Koki bias aside, he’s absoultely perfect for this type of song. Of course Kame does have a lot of solos too, he has this big solo part towards the end of the song. But even during group parts you can hear Koki’s voice the most.

Kanjani8-Ai Deshita PV preview

Recently a PV preview for Kanjani8’s upcoming single Ai Deshita was released. The song is currently being used as the theme for Nishikido Ryo’s drama Papadoru.

Now, even before Ryo-chan left NEWS I’ve been saying how I want to get into Kanjnai8 more. But that never really happened. And after Ryo left NEWS obviously that feeling intensified. However, when I was finally going to get into Kanjani8 I put all my effort into Arashi instead. Which is a little sad because I genuinely do want to get into Kanjani8, especially since it’s now the only way I get to see my beloved Ryo-chan.

Since I don’t really follow K8 that closely I never really know about, or care about, when their new single is coming out. So I kind of miss all the excitement of a song and PV preview. But since I’ve been watching Ryo’s drama, Padadoru, Ai Deshita has really grown on me. Just like watching Zenkai Girl made Tsubasa ni Koi grow on me. So, I’ll bite and see what this single is like..

First off, I really like what I see of the PV so far. Kanjani8 always put a lot of effort into their PVs. Whether that effort is a nice storyline or general crazyness. The Ai Deshita PV doesn’t seem to be any different. Most of the PV so far seems to be Kanjani8 playing their instruments in the middle of the road at sunset. Which, in itself, isn’t really any spectacular. But at the end of the PV we do see that the sky continues to get darker until it’s night, which is actually pretty cool. I’m impressed by that. And can I just say that I love the outfits. I have to say that varsity jackets and school cardigans definetly peak my interests.

The rest of the PV is the standard close-up shots and scenes of the members in a house. But you can tell that they are setting up for more elements in the full PV. And is it just me or does that house look like the same exact that they filmed the Glorious PV in?

There is one thing about this song/PV I don’t get. If this is the them for Ryo’s drama why does Subaru get most of the lines and most of the focus in the PV? It’s a little unfair. But my bias towards Ryo is probably making it a bigger deal than it really needs to be.

Arashi-Face Down PV preview

A few days ago the PV preview for Arashi’s upcoming single, Face Down, was released.

The PV seems to be yet another realatively simple PV from Arashi. A majority ofthe PV is nothing more than Arashi either sitting in business chairs or standing in a mirror room that reminds me a lot of Hey! Say! JUMP’s Super Delicate PV. This is also yet another PV without dancing. Which is honestly really sad because Arashi usually has the best and most fun choreography in all of JE.

And you know even thought the PV is completely simple I can’t help, but still like what I’m seeing of the PV. Maybe it’s because the sets are interesting with the colored ceiling or abstract walls, or maybe it’s the colorful outfits they are wearing half the time, or the fact that nearly everyone looks incredible in this PV. I say nearly because I absolutely hate Sho’s hair. It’s too short and it doesn’t work for his face at all. But most likely the real reason I like the video is because the song is really great that I’m looking past the fault of the PV. Then again it could also be the borderline annoying flashing camera angles to make the PV seem more dynamic. Even though it is a little bit annoying I do have to admit I actually think it really works for the PV.

Another plus for the PV is of course that MatsuJun and Nino are looking amazing per usual. But the most surprising thing is how well Ohno looks. He stands out the most to me in this video. It’s probably since the song is for his drama they put him more prominently in the PV.

Hey! Say! JUMP to finally release second album

After almost two years since the release of JUMP No 1, it has been announced that Hey! Say! JUMP will be releasing their long awaited second album. The album is currently untitled, but it will be released on June 6th. The album will of course come in a Limited Edition and Regular edition. The LE will have a DVD that includes footage of the album recording and the jacket shooting. The RE will come with a 3D booklet and messages from the memebers, much like the messages both editions of JUMP No 1 had.

But what’s different about this album from their last one, and most Johnny’s releases, is that the the final 3 songs on each edition will be different. The LE will get 2 old songs: Spicy by Hey! Say! BEST and Endless Dream, as well as new song Uta Utau by Hey! Say! 7. The RE edition will 2 new songs: SNAP by Hey! Say! BEST, and Hana Egao by Hey! Say! 7. The RE will also include another single medley, probably much like the one at the end of Thank You Bokutachi Kara Kimi E, so I don’t really count that as a new song.

Well, I can’t say that I’m shocked by this announcement. After 1 year passed with no new album I was pretty much expecting the announcement to come any day. And once it got to be a year and a half, then almost two years, I started to get pretty annoyed and impatient. I don’t really understand what the management is doing with Hey! Say! JUMP. First they had that whole year of not releasing a single, and then almost 2 years inbetween album releases. NEWS also had this kind of waiting period, but for good reason. There’s absolutely no reason for Hey! Say! JUMP to have these long stretches of nothing.

That small complaint aside, I’m obviously really excited for Hey! Say! JUMP to be releasing another album. HSJ is one of my top 3 favorite JE groups, and I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this release. This album already seems to be a lot better than their first album already since the only difference between LE and RE was the jackets and member messages. I’m glad that they put a lot more effort into each eddition. I can’t really comment on anything else though because most of the albums are new. But I can comment on the old songs. I really love that Hey! Say! JUMP has slowly been releasing old songs as B-sides because as it is right now nearly all of their unreleased songs have been officially released. As for Spicy though I’ve never been a huge fan of the song and I think I’ve only really heard it once ot twice. But relistening to it now it’s actually not that bad of a song. But for the unreleased songs I am way more excited for Endless Dream. I’ve been a huge fan of this song since they first sang it on Shounen Club back in 09. And it was actually one of the unreleased songs I wanted them to include in JUMP No 1. Endless Dream is really a great song. The music is great and the line distribution is almost good. 7/9 of JUMP get a decent amount of lines, but per usual Keito and Inoo are left with nothing. But quite honestly I’m just happy that Yuto has a nice chunk of lines.

And for any new JUMP fan out there, or anyone who just wants to refresh their memory, here are clips of Spicy

and Endless Dream.

NEWS are finally coming back!

After days of a mysterious countdown on Johnny’s special website, Kei-chan’s radio show, K-chan NEWS, has officially announced that NEWS Will be making their comeback. NEWS is set to release a new single, best album, and a concert tour. As of right now the official date has not been set for any of these. Also, the best album is very hands on as fans can vote for their 4 favorite news songs and the 2nd disc of the best album will consist of the top fan voted songs. I’m not entirely sure how that will work. If it will just be the songs in their original form or not. But I’m guessing they will most likely rerecord the songs like they did for the singles on the Pacific album.

I have to say that I am beyond excited that NEWS is finally making their comeback. And I have to admit after months of us fans being strung along I actually did start to think that NEWS would really just fall by the wayside. But I am of course thrilled that, that wasn’t the case. And I felt such a mixture of shock, surprise, excitement, and was generally overwhelmed, that I actually teared up by this news. I have been sticking by NEWS through all of this. Through them not releasing anything for a year, through the rumor of them breaking up, through losing two members, and through the wait of their comeback announcement. I feel exactly like the NEWS fans who waited for NEWS to comeback after their year long hiatus after the Uchi and Kusano scandals. So yes, as a pretty emotional person I was completely overcome with sheer happiness that one of my favorite idol groups are coming back, and teared up. Tears of joy though, akin to the tears of joy I shed when Kago Ai announced her comeback with her Hong Kong movie Kung Fu Chef.

To anyone that reads my blog reguarly I’m sure you’re aware of the posts I made throughout this whole NEWS ordeal, where I was skeptical about the breaking up, and the post where I raged over Ryo’s departure in general. And if you’re not, I suggest you read them if you care. Anyway, in the first post I voiced how I was devastated by my favorite member leaving, and I even said that I wasn’t sure if I was even going to continue to listen to NEWS. But that was all said in the heat of the moment and written a mere 40 minutes after finding out about it. And I have to say over the months I cooled down. I started to be able to listen to NEWS without feeling sad and I realized I could never abandoned NEWS. NEWS is my first JE group, they opened the doors to so many other artists. And I had a lot of good times with NEWS. And NEWS, in my opinion, releases some of the best music in JE. With other JE groups I feel let down by releases, but with NEWS that hardly ever happens. Pretty much the only single I’m disappointed with is Sakura Girl and the only other songs I really don’t like are Let’s Go To The Planets and Stardust, which is pretty good. And NEWS is still NEWS, no matter what change they go through. They stated off with 9 and are now 4, and I’m honestly just as excited for this lineup as I was for the lineups that included Kusano and Ryo. I could never stop listening to them. I know that there are some fans out there that do abandon idol groups when their favorite members leave. But I think that’s just silly. And if I did that I wouldn’t listen to half the idol groups I listen to now, because I’m super unlucky and my favorite members always leave before their time.

I was also really excited that fans get to vote for their favorite songs. I love fans can participate in things like this. A few years ago I voted for Miyavi’s Fan’s Best album. Though it did suck that pretty much every song I voted for didn’t make it into the album. It was still fun to pick nonetheless. I hope my picks fare better this time. The lovely news-jpop livejournal community have translated instructions for voting located here. Voting ends 12/04/30 23:39 JST, so get your votes in while you can.
And if anyone is curious here are my 4 picks.

I gotta tell you it was incredibly hard to pick just 4 songs. But I definitely picked my favorite songs. And I think these 4 songs really show the full spectrum of NEWS songs.

1. Fiesta. Fiesta has been my favorite NEWS song for as long as I can remember. I remember hearing the song right in the beginning of becoming a fan and was instantly in love with the song. There are 2 reasons I love this song. The first being just how catchy and danceable the song is. And the second reason is honestly because Ryo has a lot of lines in the song. But I still really do love the song. I seriously can’t get enough of it. The lyrics aren’t exactly deep. They’re pretty much just about banging someone, but I love this song because of how fun it is. This song really shows NEWS’ dance side.

2. Mafuyu no Nagareboshi. Now, I picked this song 100% because of the lyrics. I absolutely love them they are sapppy and adorable. “The midwinter shooting star is the afterimage of your smile” Whoever doesn’t think that’s sweet must not have a heart. And I love how bittersweet the song is. It’s about the end of a romance, but still wishing the other person happiness. I also really love how the song is sung. It’s very soft and everyone sounds really amazing. Even Shige’s voice doesn’t sound too out of place. It really shows NEWS’ soft ballad type songs.

3. Koi Yake. Koi Yake was so close to losing to Say Hello. Touch is a great album and I really wanted to include a song from it. Koi Yake has always been one of my favorite songs from this album. And after I listened to it again and remembered I loved it because of it’s undeniably catchy chorus, it became obvious to pick Koi Yake. I love this song because it has a nice rock feel to it, which is rarity in NEWS songs.

4. Minna ga iru Sekai wo Hitotsu ni Ai wo Motto Give & Take Shimashou. I’ll never forget when I first heard this song I was absolutely disappointed. I was actually disappointed by the entire Color album when I first heard it. And while I did give the songs a second chance and have grown to love nearly all of them, Color is still my least favorite NEWS album. But I really love this song. I really emcompasses everything I love about NEWS. The song is super upbeat and the lyrics have a postive message. It’s music like this that is the reason I love NEWS in the first place.

Here are my other favorites I unfortunately had to leave out: Beach Angel, Chiraizumu, Say Hello, D.T.F., Alibi, Baby! Be My Baby!, Gan Gan Ganbatte, Smile Maker, Kirameki no Kanata e, Nantoka Naru Sa, Wonderland, and Why. And of course many more secondary favorites I couldn’t vote for either. XD

Arashi go hog wild in new PV

About a month ago the PV for Arashi’s new single Wild at Heart was released.

After seeing the PV preview for this song I had high expectations for this PV. I’m not sure if the PV is really as amazing as I was expecting it to be, but I definitely enjoyed it. It’s one of those idol PVs that are relatively cheap, but make up for it because it’s overflowing with personality. And I’ve come to the conclusion that Arashi are the kings of this format. As I was writitng this PV I was thinking of past Arashi PVs to compare it to, and I’ve realized that nearly every Arashi PV had a pretty low budget or was even on a cheaply made set. But most Arashi PVs are exciting to watch otherwise, which shows just how much you can really over look those things is the PV is good enough.

And this PV is no different, there’s only 4 different scenes with 2 different outfits. The main scene in this PV is Arashi standing around in a circle just lip syncing the song. Their also wearing the main outfits for this PV, which I actually like. They’re simple black suits and everyone looks pretty good in them. The only think that irks me about them are the cut of the pants. They’re awful slight capri, or should I say Aiba-length, and who really wears that length with a suit? This scene is pretty much the same format as the Troublemaker PV and even the Happiness PV. Where they were just told to stand and pretty much do whatever they wanted to. There are a lot of cute and funny scenes because of that. And true to form Aiba’s are the most interesting to watch. But Ohno is also really bringing his A game, which is a bit out of character.
Another main part of the PV is the dance scenes. They are probably my least favorite parts of the entire PV. Mostly because the outfits are god awful. They’re wearing this metalic purple jackets with what looks to be leopard print on them. And they’re just disgusting. Let’s be honest those are the jackets that elderly men wear when they go play slots or golf. And pairing that jacket with equally metalic gold pants just doesn’t work, it clashes completely. It’s the same exact color scheme they wore for NTV’s Best Artist 2010. The sunglasses don’t really bother me though, I kinda like them. They remind me of the booklet for their Boku no Miteiru Fuukei album. But I do have to admit the glittering beaded curtains they are standing in front of scream Arashi.
This PV also contains some, what I guess JE considers, fanservice. It’s basically Arashi is trapped in some sort of suitcase, which by the way doesn’t match the rest of the entire PV. I mean, what’s the whole point of these scenes? And the Arashi members are squeezed so tightly in the suitcase that they are all over each other and on top of each other. I’m sure  there’s some Arashi orgy joke in there somewhere, but I leave that up to you.
And though all of that none of those scenes even remotely compare to my favorite, and hands down the best, scenes in the entire PV. Which are: Arashi trying to fit thought a hallway they don’t quite fit into. This is nothing more then brillant camera angles, because at a couple of points you can see they fit perfectly fine. But these scenes are just the best, filled with the members overacting trying to squeeze and push through the walls. Maybe a Indiana Jones-esque scene with the walls closing in would more a little more exciting. But I’d honestly prefer corny overacting any day of the week.

I love how the PV starts out looking old fashioned.

Super awkward Sho dance. It actually looks like he’s falling. Lol.

So, MatsuJun gets to wear a hat as a nod to this drama. Yeah, that’s much better than Aiba’s solo and focus in the Lotus PV.

I’m digging Nino’s two-toned hair.

He looks cute in the hat though.

Overacting already, I love it.

Lol.

Invisible maracas.

Ok, maybe Nino needs to tone it down a bit.

Aiba owning the close-ups per usual.

And you know, whatever Ohno is doing here.

Seriously Sho, a hula move? Lol.

This is familiar somehow.

Oh that’s right, it looks like the same walls from their Believe PV.

Ohno looks cute here for some reason.

Adorable.

Try to be less creepy Jun.

Love it.

WTF is Aiba doing?

Lol.

What? I can’t even with this. Ohno is perfect in this PV.

Oh Aiba.

I’m not quite sure why Nino looks scared, but he looks absolutely adorable.

I do not like this outfits.

I mean, I didn’t realize it was 2010 again.

Oh, trapped in a box?

Miyavi did it first. XD

Nino, what are you doing?

Bit of a Sakurabia moment.

Nino just taking over, and poor Aiba getting a knee to the face.

Go ahead, brush your shoulder off.

How low can you go?

Cute.

Now it’s a complete Sakuraiba moment.

Aiba finally getting into it.

Hot.

I love Nino wants in on the action.

He really does.

Lol.

Sexy Zone-Lady Diamond PV preview

A PV preview for Sexy Zone’s second single, Lady Diamond, was just released.

I’m actually really impressed with the PV. There seems to be a lot more effort put into this PV then for their first single. The set for this PV is amazing. There is so much going on with it, that it almost seems cluttered, but it’s extremely vibrant and adorable. The PV is very cute, childish, and fun. And I can’t help but pay more attention to the Juniors in the background as they are wearing various costumes they don’t really match each other.  I mean what does a Musketeer, a clown, and Uncle Sam really have to do with one another? But they still add an extra fun element to the PV. I’m certainly into Sexy Zone much more when they are doing the age appropriate cute songs instead of trying to be super serious. But I do admit that Fuma and Kento seem a little out of place in this group. But it sure beats staying a Junior.

Arashi to release new single

It was recently announced that Arashi will be relasing a new single. The single is entitled Face Down and will be released on May 9th. The song will be used as the theme to Aiba’s upcoming drama Mikeneko Holmes no Suiri.

I’m always happy to see Arashi release a new single, especially after how amazing Wild at Heart was. And I was pretty much expecting a new single since Aiba and Ohno are starring in spring dramas, it was pretty obvious Arashi was going to do the theme for at least one of them. I really hope that this means Arashi will be keeping us this pace release wise this year. Last year Arashi only released 2 singles 9 months apart. Which was a huge drop from the staggering 6 singles they released in 2010.

Kis-My-Mint2 releases new ad with music

Recently the PV for Kis-My-Ft2’s new single She Her Her, was released.

I think Kisumai has successfully made one of the weirdest idol PVs I’ve probably ever seen. I can’t really think of another idol PV that matches it on the “WTF did I just watch?” scale. The PV starts out with an unnecessarily long intro and the members dressed as druids inside of a prison. The prisons then shart chanting She Her Her in their man in the iron mask looking masks as a yellow gas comes out of their mouths. There are also this random numbers and math equations floating in front of Kisumai for no apparent reason. And you’re really left asking yourself why are they there. The PV never really explains it. Taisuke holds up, then eats, a piece of gum and all is right in the world because after that the PV actually starts.

The PV starts out with white glittery sparkles flying out of Kisumai’s mouths, making it incredibly obvious that we’re watching a Johnny’s PV. Then loads more of sparkles and white floating balls fill the air, giving me so much second hand embarassment from watching and a good laugh. They PV is also supposed to feature fanservice, but Johnny’s lame attempts at fanservice don’t really even deserve to be called that. In one scene Taisuke and Yuta kiss the same flower and their faces almost touch. Seriously? That’s all we get? Indirect kisses like this and Ryo and Yamapi drinking out of the same cup in the Summer Time PV are not really what I have in mind. I can’t stand thatt female idol groups parade around in bikinis and kiss each other in PVs and at concerts, but male idols hugs and have their faces really close to each other. It’s ridiculous. Where’s the male idol equivalent? I feel like I’m the lone fangirl in this, because there are people out there that think this level of fanserivce is unnecessary. But I digress.
The main theme of this PV is Kisumai trying to relieve the iron masked prisoners bad breathe. In they do so with such high tech approaches as collecting their breathe as they ride a bike. And of course when they are in this super serious sciene lab they do so in style on their roller skates. Which is exactly what you want to be wearing in a lab. Rolling at high speeds with all that glass and chemicals around, and I can’t fathom what could possibly go wrong. Kisumai also collects data by having them breathe on mannequins. Which makes perfect sense because we all know how mannequins have an extremely low tolerance for bad breath. But it’s all worth it for the scene where Taisuke is all up on a mannequin. I’m pretty sure at one point he even kisses it. You can’t ask for anything better than that.
The finally at towards the end of the PV the toughest prisoner come out with chains, flies, and a giant cloud of bad breath, who by the way is some random guy who isn’t Japanese. You gotta wonder what he was thinkinh of while filming this. But have no fear that guy is no match for Kisumai’s rainbow colored breath.
The PV then tries to end on some high notes with the newly freed prisoners flalling behind the king of bad breathe, which is pretty stupid. But the realy highlight is when Kisumai dance in front of a rainbow filled sky, which immediately reminds me of Arashi’s Kitto Daijoubu PV.

I actually really like this PV. It’s the perfect mixture of WTF and humor. But there is one aspect of this PV that I don’t like, and that that fact that this PV is nothing more then one giant Watering Kissmint commercial. And would you look at that Kisumai were recently in a Watering Kissmint commercial, imagine that. I know JE boys always get endorsements because of how popular they are, but they don’t need to pimp those products in their PVs. They have shamelessly pimped the products they are endorsing outside of a commercial before, but it’s usually done at concerts. Like when Kame ate what I think was Crunky chocolate at one of KAT-TUN’s concerts, and when Hey! Say! 7 danced with fruit at one of their concerts. But I can’t really think of a time it was shamelessly featured in a PV. And that honestly throws the whole PV off. The whole moral of the PV is chew Watering Kissmint it relieves bad breath. Why didn’t they just hide Watering Kissmint in ever other frame too?

Totally getting a man in the iron mask feel, even though this one is made of leather.

Druid Kisumai.

Don’t get why they’re trying to make this all dark and serious.

Why the floating numbers?

The gum, it solves everything.

Now it feels like a Johnny’s PV.

Roller skates, now it feels like a Kisumai PV.

So dazzling that he knocks him over. Seriously?

Intense Hiro face. Lol.

The bird’s eye view kiss is kinda cool, I have to admit.

Taisuke is adorable.

Oh, the big fanservice. It sucks. :/

Taisuke looks pretty hot afterwards though.

Hiro always trys way too hard to look good. And it never works. Though he is growing on me personality wise.

Let me just randomly skate across the lab.

Love Hiro’s reaction. Hate how he’s the only one reacting while everyone else has a blank stare.

The dance is terrible.

And Hiro has the most genuine reaction when the flowers bloom.

Wow, they actually showed the other members for longer than a second. Senga has the best reaction by the way.

This dance, there’s just nothing good about it.

So, Taisuke who’s the hot girl you’re with?

That’s right, you kiss that mannequin.

Is this seriosuly a scene in the PV?

Lol.

Doing the moon walk on roller skates.

Hot.

WTF is with this move?

Swing your partner round and round.

Oh it’s serious now.

He doesn’t really look that tough.

Of course he has to be American or European.

I like how they eat the gum in beat to the song.

Of course rainbow beams! But where have I seen those before?

Oh yeah, in the Watering Kissming commercial.

Cool effect.

Cheap effect.

I don’t even know what to say about this.

They’re free. Hooray I guess.

Miya nose beam. I couldn’t resist. Though I think this is lost on my JE readers. XD

Taisuke looks so good.

Ok then.

Chu.

Is Jin’s song really a hot-button issue?

So, I’ve really been neglecting blogging lately. And I do apologize for that. But in my defense there haven’t really been all that many blog worthy posts, just some general posts that can really be made any time. And because of that I’ve been in full procrastination mode. But when I read about Jin’s new song from his first album, I just had to make a blog post about it. This news is already a day old so you probably have heard about it already. But apparently people have already gotten digital copies of Jin’s debut US album Japonicana and one song in particular has gained a lot of attention. And that song is That’s What She Said featuring Uffie. And can I for a moment say I was pretty interested in hearing their collab. I first heard Uffie’s Pop The Glock around 05 or 06 on myspace and liked it, but I honestly haven’t given her much thought since.
Now the reason this song is getting so much attention is because of the lyrics of the song and how awful they are. Because they are. They are also extremely laughable. And hearing him sing the song made it even more hilarious, especially the chug it part. But you all know I would never make an entire blog post just to point out something as obvious as the lyrics being terrible. No, instead this post is all about my opinions on the fans reactions to the song.

And the fans reactions have been. “The lyrics are awful.” “Go back to Japan and make decent music again.” “The lyrics are misogynist.” “OMG the song is about rape.” “Just because there’s American music that sounds like this doesn’t mean it’s ok for this song to exist.” All I can say to this is, my god everyone takes absolutely everything so seriously. Now, let me explain why I don’t agree with nearly all of this and why it’s all wrong.

First off, this song is not about rape. I know that arama is exploding over the fact that it’s about rape or actually alludes to rape.  Which it does, it’s kind of alluding to it. But he’s also trying to be funny by adding the, now well over used, phrase that’s what she said to the end to imply that the lyrics aren’t really about what you think they are. Just like the lyrics of Trey Songz’ Say Ahh are about drinking even though they seem to be about something else. And Trey Songz lyrics are also basically forcing the girl too, but I’ve never heard anyone complain about that song ever! This is simply Jin trying to be “hard” and emulate the dozens upon dozens of rap and hip hop songs that are about male dominance over women. Now, do I personally like or agree with the fact that songs with such lyrics exists? Absolutely not. But the fact of the matter is they do exist and about 95% of all hip hop artists have a song with similar lyrics. And Jin is merely trying to appeal to that fanbase. This song could be far worse and far more graphic. It’s actually tame compared to some rap songs. And Date Rape by Sublime is a song actually about rape, go complain about that song. (But it’s actually against rape in the end, but whatever.) And before you cry misogyny remember that it’s the 21st century and there is of course equal opportunity. Go listen to My Neck My Back by Khia, How Many Licks by Lil Kim, or Nicki Minaj’s verse in Bedrock. The theme of the lyrics are pretty much the same if you ask me. Why isn’t anyone complaining about those lyrics being offensive to men? Probably because men don’t care nearly as much as women do. It’s just the type of lyrics that hip hop artists make. And if you don’t like it hip hop obviously isn’t the genre for you.

But the fan’s complaints really come from the fact that fans can’t accept that Jin is actually making this type of music. I know this might be hard for some fans to comprehend and you might not realize what’s going on, but brace yourself, Jin is actually selling out for fame. I know it’s so shocking and unbelieveable and I know this is a new concept to grasp, but please try to hold back your gasps. Can you imagine that Jin would actually care more about worldwide recognition, fame, and money instead of being this person who is only loved by really one region of the world with small amounts of fans scattered sporadically across the globe? That he would actually rather make meaningless dribble than meaningful lyrics just to gain acceptence and recognition? Clam down Jin fans I know this is such an utter betrayal to you. I mean it’s like he’s been lying to you all these years. Surely he must be the first person in the history of the world to do this, there’s no way fans should respect him anymore after this.

Now maybe I’m a jaded American, but am I really the only one who doesn’t care at all whatsoever that he’s selling out? Am I the only one who actually excepted this and realizes it is a bit necessary? That I actually would rather seem him succeed here by whatever means necessary? I can’t possibly be! Especially when a lot of Jin fans are from the US or the West. But then, why are they reacting like this? American artists sell out ALL THE TIME. Seriously they do. Remember when Usher was singing about having it bad and now he’s singing about daddy being home? Or when Enrique Iglesias wanted to be your hero but now tonight he’s fucking you? Or how about when Gwen Stefani was just a girl but then was suddenly a hollaback girl? There are probably TONS more but those are just the ones that I remember off the top of my head. I’ll never forget when I first heard Yeah but Usher and being appalled. And I’ll never forget the first time I heard Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake, my sister and I both said, “Why is he trying to soud black?” Or how about today’s popular music in general? Club music is popular so every artist is making that type of music just to sell records and stay relevant. Lately most of the popular American music is about drinking, clubbing, sex, drugs, and how awesome they are. Nearly ever song is about one of those things. And before you cry that not all American music is like this, please note that I said POPULAR music. And yes there is the occasional meaningful song. And we al know that Bruno Mars and Adele are quite popular. But this isn’t about them. This is about the majority of dance music that is flooding the airwaves.

Now, huh, why is it that Jin’s music is club themed with lyrics about having sex that are completely vacuous? It almost seems like he’s trying to make a name for himself by copying whatever is currently popular. No, he couldn’t be doing that. That would mean that Jin is just as manufactured as the American artists that are the reason elitist Japanese music fans stopped listening to American music in th first place. Which I might add is hilarious. I love that Japanese music is meaningful and it honestly is a nice change and a breath of fresh air. But don’t think for one second that means I have abandoned music from my native country and in my native tounge. Absolutely not! And you better believe I gobble up pretty much whatever Pitbull puts out because it is catchy and danceable. Obviously Jin should make the same type of music he made in Japan just to please his Japanese fans and fans of his Japanese music. Obviously most fans would rather have him crash and burn in the US completely as long as he is making music they approve of. That’s completely arrogant and ridiculous. And it makes no sense. You’d think these fans would have their hipster shades all ready for when he becomes popular in the US just to say they knew about him WAY before he was popular. And especially since he was making music in a completely different language you can’t get more underground that than. Obviously that should give you 500 hipster points!

Now I’m going to say something that Jin fans will not agree with but it is 100% true and this is something I’ve said before on this blog, this song is awful but it’s exactly the kind of music he has to make. What is so hard to get?  He’s trying to crack the US market. The US not Japan. Obviously what’s popular in Japan is NOT popular in the US. I think that’s painfully obviously by the fact that if any male idol group performed as is in the US as their debut they would be laughed out of the country! And Jin knows that, he said himself that Japan tends to like ballads while the US likes more upbeat music. Which is why he’s not releasing English versions of Eternal, Seasons, or Murasaki in the US. That’s why you’ll never see him sing songs like care in the US it will ALWAYS be Test Drive. We are talking about a country where songs about being sexy, being licked like a lollipop, and making love in a club were all hits! You have to realize the fact that Bruno Mars, Adele, and Taylor Swift being so popular is really a fluke and not really the norm. If you still don’t believe me go on youtube and watch BillboardGoddess’s videos of the top 50 songs on the US billboard charts, then tell me I’m wrong. (Obviously besides the country music!) Jin even tries to cover up the way he looks. People are saying it’s so people don’t know that he’s Japanese. But I honestly think it’s so people don’t notice how soft the features of his face are. Jin’s a pretty boy and that doesn’t really fly in the US so much, well with acting it does but not with music so much. I think that’s also why Jin has expressed he wants to cut his hair. After reading articles about Jin’s US album it really makes me think that Jin knows exactly what’s up and what he’s doing. I mean Jin has always liked American music. So, of course he has an example of what his music is supposed to sound like.

I’m sure this post is going to get a lot of negative comments, and all I can say is come at me. I firmly stand by everything said here. And let me point out that I am not even a Jin fan, never have been. He’s easy on the eyes that’s about it. And honestly if he wasn’t making an album in the US I probably wouldn’t really care about him at all.

Arashi-Wild at Heart PV preview

Recently a Dwango commerical for Arashi’s new single started airing, giving us fans out first glimpse at Arashi’s new PV for their new single, Wild at Heart.

When I first heard this song I was hoping for an extremely fun and old school Arashi style PV. So, I’m really excited that the PV preview so far is leading in that direction. The PV preview is only 15 seconds longs, so the finished product could essentially be anything. But most JE PVs are pretty much exactly like what the PV preview show. Which means we can asume that this is what the majority of the PV is going to look like. Which is honestly fine by me. The PV shows Arashi dancing in ridiculous semi-colorful and semi-shiny outfits. Doing a dance that is in what looks like a disco style. Which will forever remind me of NEWS’s Koi no ABO PV. And they are dancing in front of these shiny beads. Which even though they are extremely cheap, they really work for the PV because the way the lights hits them, at one point it makes it look like glitter is raining down on them. Which is just perfect.
The second half of the PV preview is a little more serious. It shows Arashi dancing in a white room in all black suits on a track that’s moving in a circular motion, ala the Troublemaker PV. It also briefly shows the guys doing stupid and completely unserious dancing, which I absolutely love. And I gotta say, the guys look great in these scenes. Especially MatsuJun looking great in that hat, and Nino looking gorgeous as always showing off his new hair.

Hey! Say! JUMP’s new PV leaves me super impressed

The full PV for Hey! Say! JUMP’s upcoming new single, Super Delicate, has recently been released.

After watching the full PV it seems that the PV is just as cheaply made as the PV preview from ZIP showed. The entire PV only has 2 equally simple sets. And yet, I cannot find one fault for the PV. Yes, it’s a cheaply made PV, but it’s done in such a way that you don’t even really notice. The PV is still very interseting and entertaining. And that’s mostly due to the fact that they really used the main set to their full advantage. The main set isn’t really much to look at. It’s basically a giant white runway with these weird abstract, I’m going to call them towers, periodically placed throughout the set. On an all black background with dozens of white lights. And the background and lighting are pretty much cheap sets 101. H!P has done several sets just like that when they can’t afford anything better. And Hey! Say! JUMP probably would have been able to have a better set if they didn’t insist on making horribly cheap PVs for Wonderland Train and Su.Ri.Ru which are have the same awful fanmade feel to them that the Aing – Aishiteru PV did. The set is white so I guess it does have a very crisp and polished feel to it. And it makes the brightly dressed Hey! Say! JUMP pop. But at the same time it’s all white which is bland and boring in itself. But like I said they really do take full advantage of the set by using it in two other ways. The first way is obviously the members walking down it like a runway. Which I actually like because it shows off the members. But it is a little silly when you think about it because it has absolutely nothing to do with the song. And the other way is used for group close-ups. And I gotta hand it to them they really try to fool the viewer into thinking it’s a different set by lowering the lighting. I also really like the close-up set. It kinda of looks like funhouse mirrors but done in a better way.

The dance for this is also incredible. It’s perfectly in synch and the moves are really dynamic. However, this PV doesn’t really show too much of the dance which is kind of sad. And they mainly focus on the worst part of the dance which is the stupid eyes over the face move. And they don’t show the Yamajima move, what’s up with that? I seriously recommend watching their Shounen Club performance of this song if you want to see the dance, they totally killed it. I posted it on tumblr a few weeks ago, hopefully it didn’t get deleted yet.

But much like with any cheap PV the best parts of the PV are the members themselves. They look absolutely incredible. Well, most of them do. I have no idea what they were thinking when they did Hikaru’s, Keito’s, and Inoo’s hair. They look ridiculous. And the guys are wearing 2 outfits that are really great. Suits and more casual outfits. And they are styled pretty nicely for the most part. Expect Chinen’s casual outfit makes him look like a clown, Hikaru’s pants are disgusting in each outfit, and who really wears ascots ever? But besides that they look incredible. Especially my beloved Yuto. He looks amazing in both outfits, and he co-leads the PV with Ryosuke. The amount of Yuto screen time in this PV is amazing. Yes, Inoo and Keito only get like 3 seconds of screen time to compensate for it. But I’m not going to even pretend that I care about that. Yuto hasn’t gotten this much screen time since Mayonaka no Shadow Boy, and I’m going to relish every second of it. Especially since he’ll most likely be taking his usual postion in PVs for their next single, lurking in the back or just off to the side.

They focus way too much time on the title screen.

Ryosuke tries too hard to make and intense face, but it just looks awkward.

He should just focus on looking pretty.

I’m always impressed by this move.

What a great scene. Who doesn’t want to just see their pants?

Ryosuke’s conceited pose.

I don’t get why Hikaru keeps doing his hair like this, as if it looks good.

Cheap lighting 101.

No, seriously it is.

Work it Yuto. XD

Modeling in a PV will forever remind me of Morning Musume’s Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai PV.

I absolutely love the close-up scenes set.

Yuto. *O*

Nice outfit, but I cannot stand Chinen.

I like Hikaru’s outfit from the waist up. But what’s going on with the rest? Baggy pants tucked into boots, I can’t even with this.

Cute.

I love Yabu.

Takaki has the best outfit.

Stupid move.

Yuto looking adorable during the dance scenes.

Chinen’s outfit is just awful.

Adorable.

Hot.

Intense close-ups of the towers. It’s hilarious that these abstract pieces get more screen time than Inoo and Keito do. Lol.

Daiki looks so good here.

The sitting down reminds me of

NEWS’s Hoshi wo Mezashite PV.

Yabu’s a cutie.

That hair. o_O

Cute.

And that hair. o_O

At least Keito does have normal hair at one point. He looks cute here, too bad you hardly see him.

Can I just laugh that the group close-ups are split by having Hey! Say! 7 in one group and Hey! Say! BEST in another, like they should be, and that instead they are split by popularity? This group features the most popular members.

What’s up with Hikaru’s pants? Are we in the 80’s all of a sudden?

Adorable.

Oh, Yuto. I love how the mirrors shows a different expression.

Hot.

Hikaru is still cute under all that ugly hair.

Oh look, they finally show the least popular members group full on.

Why do they insist on showcasing their worst move?

Cute.

I don’t get why they show the set floating at the end.

Kis-My-Ft2-She Her Her preview

Recently the full radio rip for Kisumai’s 3rd single, She Her Her, was released.

You know, before Kisumai debuted I had this misconception that they only released rock songs like FIRE BEAT. But after they debuted and I started to go back and listen to their old songs I found out that they have pretty much always released the same type of upbeat songs that all Johnny’s groups release. And She Her Her isn’t really any different. But I can’t really say that I mind, because I love this type of idol song. What really draws me to this song is that is sounds like something NEWS would release. The song is really nice. The music is pretty slow paced, but does have a bit of low dance music in the background. Overall it’s really soothing to listen to. And sounds like a sweet sappy love song we’ve come to expect from JE. I also really love Taisuke’s rap parts in the song. I like that the music changes up a bit and adds a guitar riff.

But I absolutely do not like the She Her Her chants throughout the song. The breathy way they are sung come off as awkward instead of sexy and throw off the whole song. They only appear in the beginning and after the instrumental break, but there’s such a disconnect from the rest of the song.

While I do love the happy and sweet sound of this song I don’t really think it’s strong enough to be an A-side. I could see this song much better suited as an album song in their debut album. Especially following their first 2 singles which had strong dance beats.

Yamapi-Ai, Texas PV preview

Recently a PV preview for Yamapi’s upcoming new single, Ai, Texas, was released.

After watching the PV preview I have mixed feeling about the PV. The first half of the PV preview shows Yamapi walking in front of some really cheap and poorly done GC backgrounds. You should never watch a PV and have your first impression be, “Well, that’s obviously fake.” The PV also doesn’t have any dance scenes so Yamapi makes up for that with some really ridiculous hand movements. I was literally waiting for him to throw up the Daigo cross rock hands, but then I remembered that was Tegoshi’s thing.

The PV isn’t really all bad, towards the end of the preview we see Yamapi in a bar setting. It’s not really super interesting, but I actually couldn’t tell that it was fake. And I do like the filter effects on that scene. It reminds me a lot of his Hadakanbo PV. And of course he’s looking as gorgeous as ever. But he really needs to work on his English, I had no idea he was saying don’t you think so until I watched this video. Perhaps he should spend time actually studing English with his random French chick.

KAT-TUN-Lock On PV preview

Recently a PV preview for KAT-TUN’s Lock On, a track from their upcoming album Chain was released.

Can I just say that I wasn’t expecting this album to get a PV. Mostly because JE groups don’t really release PVs for album songs unless they are Arashi. I know KAT-TUN did release a PV for No More Pain, but it seemed like they only did that so they could garner more interest in the album since the album didn’t feature Jin. He was off doing his pre-departure solo concerts. They did also make a PV for the album song You, but that was done to also sell more copies since it was the last album Jin was featured in before he left to study in the US. Obviously KAT-TUN has always revolved around Jin.

I wish I could say that I was impressed or even interested in this PV, but I’m not, not even a little bit. The PV is just so simple and unimaginative. KAT-TUN has released a lot of similar looking PVs in the past, but lately they are taking it to a whole new level. And it honestly feels a bit like deja vu. This is the 3rd PV to feature KAT-TUN dancing in all black with a basically solid white background. The other 2 PVs are of course Ultimate Wheels and Run For You. This is the 5th time they danced with a white background, they other 2 PVs not mentioned before are Signal and Ultimate Wheels. And again with the black outfits! Am I the only one who is sick of KAT-TUN always wearing black in their PVs? This is the 10th time KAT-TUN has worn all black in their PV. Those PVs are: Bokura no Machi de, Star Rider, No More Pain, Run For You, Birth, Ultimate Wheels, Change UR World, Rescue, and One Drop. Not to mention the PVs who’s outfits are nearly all black: Lips, White Xmas, The D-Motion, and half of the Real Face PV. I guess JE really wants to emphasize that KAT-TUN has a cool image. But black in nearly ever single PV they’ve ever released is a bit much. And frankly, I’m sick of it. Surely there’s another way to get their image across clearly. But even though they are dressed exactly the same that they always are, I admit I do like the outfits. But that’s because they’re wearing suit jackets. A pretty straightforward polished look.

The PV also does try to have a storyline, but it’s a little strange and a lot stupid. It focuses around the members of KAT-TUN being in love with robots. But I’ll go deeper into my comments about that aspect of the PV when I do my review of it. The only real plus for this PV so far is how fine Koki looks in it.

Yamapi-Ai, Texas preview

Recently the full radio rip for Yamapi’s upcoming singles Ai, Texas was released.

I’m really surprised with the way that this song sounds. It’s so not like something Yamapi would make. And not even because lately he’s been releasing electronic dance music. The song is just so unYamapi, if that even makes sense. It just doesn’t really fit his voice. But I actually do really love the overall sound of the song. The music is this very soft sort of ballad like rock music. But the whole reason I love the music is because it sounds like something Buono would do. It sounds fairly similar in style to Take It Easy by Buono or even 1/3 no Junjou na Kanjou. (and yes, I am well aware that Buono’s version is a cover.) Also the last line’s of each verse where he changes the pitch and extends the lines sounds exactly like what Momoko does at the end of her lines in the verses of Buono’s Independent Girl.

But, I think the chorus of this song throws off the flow of the song entirely. It’s one of the only times in a song where the chorus isn’t the best part. It just sounds really awkward. There’s this weird echo effect on his voice that makes it sound really odd and creepy. And the same time it makes the chorus sound super serious and corny.

But favorite part of this song by far is Yamapi’s speaking parts. I’m just a sucker for when he speaks in songs. His speaking parts have always been my favorite parts of NEWS’s Bambina and Akaku Moyuru Taiyou. What can I say, Yamapi has a hot voice.

Akanishi Jin to wed Kuroki Meisa

It was reported in today’s issue of Sports Nippon that Akanishi Jin is set to marry Kuroki Meisa. It is also said that Meisa is two months pregnant. I want to also point out, before fans jump down my throat, that this is technically still a rumor since neither agencies has released an official statement. But since this news is being reported on this morning’s news, we can pretty much assume, with good reason, that this is true.

Now, this is something I did not see coming at all. Of course I’m sure fans are familiar with the article that Sports Nippon reported a few day ago that said Jin and Meisa were seen on a date at Tokyo DisneySea. I’m sure most fans like myself really thought nothing about that rumor. I didn’t really take it as anything more as Jin going out with yet another random chick. I didn’t really think Jin would end up marrying her. I didn’t expect Jin to marry anyone for a while to be honest. Jin’s partying and playboy ways are pretty much all over the place. I mean, his partying with his group of friends is so infamous they are dubbed the Akanishi Troop by tabloid magazines. Not really the person I’d expect to see running off and getting married. Jin seemed to really enjoy the single life. But I guess we all gotta grow up sometime.

While I am a bit shocked, just because how unexpected and shocking the news is, I can’t really say I didn’t see it coming. Because honestly I did. Jin might love to party and bang random chicks, but he still really wanted to be a father. Which he has expressed before. Most recently, and maybe the only time, in this tweet.

So, what’s my personal responce to this? Quite honestly, I don’t care so much. I wish I could say I’m such a dedicated and delusional Jin fangirl that I cried buckets of tears over the fact that he’s actually with a woman that isn’t me. Well, I don’t really wish that because that’s embarassing. I would have written it regardless though, because I don’t care one ounce what anyone thinks. The reason I don’t care at all is because I’m just not a Jin fan. Yes, he’s one of the best looking male idols in all of Japan, but I’m just not really a fan of his. I have absolutely no attachment to him other than the fact that he’s pretty to look at. Maybe if it was Ryo or Koki or someone else, I’d care. But even then I don’t really think I would. I’m not really delusional and I don’t really care about anyone in JE at that obsessive of a level. I do admit, I have had my moments of being an embarassing and semi-delusional fan. When my idols graduate or leave groups I usually cry, and cry a lot. But at least that is something to be upset about. But on the other hand, when Miyavi announced his shotgun wedding I do admit I cried. A lot more then I’m proud to admit. Mostly because this meant I officially had no chance with Miyavi, and a little because he did complain to fans he was super lonely all while he was really married. But mostly because of my delusional moment of weakness. But in my defense I was 16 at the time, and I have been following Miyavi since I was 12. He was one of the first Japanese artists I liked. And I spent 4 years following him in a pretty obsessive manner. But I like to think I have grown up substantially since then. I do get fangirls reaction of crying or being really upset on some level. But I still think it’s completely absurd. Miyavi is the only celebrity I’ve ever really cared was married. Jackson Rathbone announced a few days ago his girlfriend was pregnant, and I didn’t care at all. I didn’t cry a river. I said, “Oh man!,” and that was it. And I do think fangirls reacting like it’s the end of the world because he is married is outrageous. Almost as outrageous as male fans thinking female idols shouldn’t date. But that’s a whole nother subject completely.

I also have to ask the question, where does this leave Jin. I wish I could say where does this leave Meisa too, but this is an idol blog and not a Meisa blog. That and the fact that I don’t care about Meisa. She’s extremely pretty but I have not seen or heard anything by her ever. So, what happens to Meisa does not effect or bother me at all. A lot of people are saying that this is probably the end for both of them. But I seriously don’t see that happening for Jin. But there is apparently a marriage ban within Johnny’s. Apparently when Kimura Takuya announced his marriage 4 people commited suicide and since then you have the marriage ban. I wonder how JE is handling all of this? Jin might be trying to make it in America, and signed to Warner Music but he is still very much affiliated with Johnny’s. He’s still listed on Johnn’s Net and still makes vidoes for Johnny’s Net. Apparently fans take things like this very seriously. But Jin is pretty popular, maybe not SMAP popular, but popular nonetheless. And I don’t see this hurting him all that much. Especially since his next release is his full length American album in March. And that obviously wasn’t halted or anything. It might also be being released in Japan, but it is mainly targeted for the US. So, he’s not going to be promoting much in Japan anyway to really hurt sales. Female fans also seem to react differently than male fans. If female fans really cared about their idols dating then everytime they were caught dating they’d get kicked out like female idols do. And male fans are caught extremely often. The fact that they are not proves that female fans don’t really care all that much. They obviously do care, but not really enough to cause a substantial drop in sales. And it’s happened time after time. Arihara Kanna and Hashimoto Ryosuke scandal, Kanna got kicked out. Takaki Yuya and Kato Rubi scandal, Rubi got kicked out. And those are just two examples.

There is one aspect I do find strange and that is how MIA Jin has been lately. If you follow him on twitter you might notice that he hasn’t posted since October. And his last tweet was him announcing his official youtube channel. I guess you can blame it on him being too busy with Meisa now. But not entirely. If you follow him you might also know that a few days ago Jin tweeted on his brother’s twitter. Which was apparelty done on his brother’s phone, so maybe he was just too lazy to get his own phone. But with this piece of news I wonder if that really was the case. Maybe I’m just over analyzing things per usual.

All in all, I’m happy for Jin. Genuinely happy for him. It seems like he really wanted to be a father and because of that I’m happy he finally is going to be one. I’m not going to be petty and say he’s making a mistake because it’s his life. Yes, the timing sucks as he’s right in the middle of trying to conquer the US. But like I said on twitter, this isn’t really going to change anything because it’s not. Shortly after his daughter was born Miyavi went on a world tour. It didn’t exactly make him father of the year, but it is what it is. And apparently Jin is friends with Miyavi, maybe he can get some tips from him.
