Do male idols have it worse after all?

IdolWedding

Now, if you guys read my blog at all you’ll know that I have very conflicting feelings about the no dating rule in the idol world. I have made a few posts on their own about it. My most recent, and in my humble opinion my best piece on the subject was, The no dating rule and Johnny’s special treatment. In that post I was able to vent all my frustrations about how male idols have it a lot easier than female idols do in regards to relationships. And the post was partially fueled by all the anger I accumulated over the years from beloved idols that were ripped out of their groups because of scandals.

The deeper and deeper I venture into the idol fandom the more clearly I see things, and the stronger an opinion I form about certain things. While I do still believe that male idols are getting special treatment in the short-term, I’m also starting to think that male idols may be getting the short end of the stick in the end after all.

And this post is of course talking about marriage. Marriage is considered one of the biggest, and arguably most important, moments in someone’s life. Certain people have to fight for the right just to be able to get married, and it seems idols aren’t any different. Male idols anyway.

Think for a moment of some of your favorite former female idols. Chances are around half of them have gotten married already and in some cases even have children. Even Nakazawa Yuko’s time finally came. Now think about the ages of these former idols. And more specifically think about the ages these idols were when they got married. Female idols have gotten married anywhere from 20-40. Now let’s look at the ages of male idols. If you exclude the younger members of Sexy Zone, the ages of debuted Johnny’s members range from 18-50. And of those only a small few are actually married.

Let’s look at the youngest former idol that got married that I’m aware of. It’s of course former Morning Musume member Tsuji Nozomi. Tsuji got married when she was just 20 years old. Now let’s look at the roster of Johnny’s members who are around that age. Sato Shori and Kotaki Nozomu are 18 years old. Kikuchi Fuma is 19 years old. Nakayama Yuma and Nakajima Kento are 20 years old. Kamiyama Tomohiro, Hashimoto Ryosuke, Fujii Ryusei, Okamoto Keito, Nakajima Yuto, Chinen Yuri, and Yamada Ryosuke are 21 years. Shigeoka Daiki is 22 years old.

That’s a baker’s dozen of male idols who could technically get married any day now if they were allowed to. Now there are of course several things to factor in. Not every single person wants to get married, not every single person wants to have kids, and not every single person wants to get married that young. And that is true. But for the sake of this blog post let’s pretend that every single male idol does in fact want to get married.

The average age a person gets married is between 25-32 years old. In the United States it’s 27 for women and 29 for men. In Japan it’s 28 for women and 30 for men. But because that’s just the average age and people obviously get married above or below the average I’m going to use the 25-32 age range for the sake of argument. Now let’s see which Johnny’s members fall into that age range shall we?

Kiriyama Akito is 25 years old. Miyata Toshiya, and Hamada Takahiro are 26 years old. Fujigaya Taisuke, Tegoshi Yuya, Kato Shigeaki, Kawai Fumito, and Nakama Junta are 27 years old. Masuda Takahisa, Kamenashi Kazuya, Yokoo Wataru, and Tsukada Ryoichi are 28 years old. Yamashita Tomohisa, Taguchi Junnosuke, Okura Tadayoshi, Kitayama Hiromitsu, Totsuka Shota, and Goseki Koichi are 29 years old. Yasuda Shota, Koyama Keiichiro, and Nishikido Ryo are 30 years old. Maruyama Ryuhei, Ninomiya Kazunari, Matsumoto Jun, Ueda Tatsuya, and Nakamaru Yuichi are 31 years old. Takizawa Hideaki, Murakami Shingo, Sakurai Sho, and Aiba Masaki are 32 years old.

That’s a whopping 30 members of Johnny’s that are around the marrying age. Even if only half of them have any desire to get married and/or have a family that’s still 15 members. Seems like a rather large number if you ask me.

And these are just the male idols that fall into the standard marrying age. It has nothing to do with the members who are younger or older than this who also want to get married. And let me tell you Johnny’s of various ages have voiced their desires to get married. Johnny’s Junior member Kyomoto Taiga said that he wants to be married by the time he’s 30. Yasui Kentaro said he wants to be a father by the time he’s 30. And Iwahashi Genki mentioned how he wants to be a father as kind and understanding as his own father on an episode of Gamushara J’s party.

But I don’t think anything is more heartbreaking than the members who are older and desperately want to get married but can’t. I’m sure all the unmarried members of SMAP and Arashi have probably mentioned at least once that they want to get married. I know for a fact that Arashi members have. MatsuJun even joked that on Arashi’s 10th anniversary all the members should announce their marriages at once. But when it comes to members wanting to get married no member mentions it as frequently and as heartfelt as Sakurai Sho.

But since Sho knows that he’s an idol and the fans would be upset he almost always either downplays, or doesn’t even mention, the wife aspect. Instead he mentions how much he wants to have children. He’s mentioned that he doesn’t even care about having a wife, but he wants a family and he wants to bring a large blanket and have a picnic with them in the park.

He also mentioned that if he has anything else in life he wants to live to be old and have his grandchildren visit him on New Years.

And if that’s not the most heartbreaking thing you’ve ever heard your soul must be missing. We have a poor man who desperately wants to get married but isn’t allowed to because he happens to be an idol. And it’s especially impossible for Arashi since they are national idols. So I ask you dears reader which is truly worse, being a female idol that has to graduate at 25 but after that gets to have a life, family, and most likely a new career, or being a male idol and having the freedom to continue to be an idol for as long as they wish to, but in return has to give up on one of the most important moments of their lives?

And with each passing year it gets worse and worse for every older unmarried Johnny’s member. They are starting to be too old to have kids or at least starting to have it be too difficult to keep up with those kids. Now sure you can have kids whenever you want. There have been people who had kids in their 60s. And my Aunt didn’t have her first and only kid until she was 41. But going from personal experience it makes everything harder. My father turned 35 a month after I was born. I’m 22 now which makes my father 57 years old. And I was my father’s 2nd child.

Since my father was already 40 years old by the time I was a child he was already having a bit of trouble keeping up with me while playing. My childhood friend and I would also joke about how old of a man he was. And he was always the 2nd oldest father in my class. (He only lost because one kid’s father was 60 years old.) You also always hear older men say how much they don’t want a child at this point in their life because they’ll be 60 years old once they graduate high school.

Now of course you could have kids at any age if you’re really willing to, and I’m sure some people are thinking I’m being ridiculous to focus on the age thing so much, but let’s be honest having a child that old isn’t really ideal at all.

And it’s really sad when you think about this because in one sense Sho’s life is completely passing him by. He can have all the success in the world but it doesn’t really mean anything to him because he doesn’t have a family to share it with. He would probably be fine with any level of success just as long as he has a family. And I really feel for the man, I do. Sometimes I wish they would let him be the one Arashi member to get married already. But at the same time it seems unfair because I’m sure every other Arashi member wants to get married just as badly as Sho does.

That’s why no matter how big of an Arashi fan I am, and no matter how upset I’d be, I would understand 100% if they disbanded the group tomorrow so the members could go off and start families. I’ve actually kind of mentally prepared myself for that announcement to happen any day now. The members are always kind of vague when it comes to the future. They’ll say things like they don’t think much about what they’ll be doing in a years time, or they want to continue doing their best in the future. They even once said that Arashi will continue for as long as Ohno is able to keep up with the dances and that it all depends on him.

However, at the same time it’s absurd that male idols have to either give up on having a family or quit. It’s just like Kago Ai said, idols are puppets. They are alive but they are unable to feel or love. Sure, male idols might seem to have the good life initially, partying and having a different girl every night. But eventually you grow up and you realize you want something more substantial than that. But they can’t because someone is pulling their strings.

And the fans don’t make it any easier. They certainly treat idols like puppets, dolls, or another play thing. They wind them up and watch them dance. They dress them up however they like but they must never touch. They place them on a shelf until they gather dust and swiftly cast them aside for the latest model.

People seem to forget that even though they are idols they are still people. That beneath that hard porcelain is a live beating heart. And that honestly has to be the hardest part about being an idol, living for someone else other than yourself.

Being a non-Japanese speaker in the idol fandom

idols4

Yesterday the fandom was abuzz with everything SUPER GiRLS after the graduation of Yasaka Saori and the addition of 3 new girls into the group. And while I read people’s reaction to it, I sat there a little confused at what my own reaction was. To my surprise I didn’t feel anything I was expecting to feel, in fact I hardly felt anything at all. And the whole time I kept thinking to myself, ” Why?” I mean, I really like SUPER GiRLS. I’ve been following them since they released their very first PV, and I’ve been actively keeping up with them. So, why is it that I felt so apathetic? I then also started to think, did I even like them at all.

I have to say, first of all, I of course I do love the group. It’s just that at the same times it does feel like I’m not a fan at all. And I’ve been feeling that way about them for a while. And not really SUPER GiRLS alone, or in particular actually, I’ve been feeling this way about several groups. These feelings are surrounding by groups that aren’t, for lack of a better term, international fan friendly. And what I mean by that is, groups like SUPER GiRLS, Fudanjuku, YuiKaori, etc, that aren’t either insanely popular or are part of an established agency and therefore have a huge legion of foreign fans that subs and translate everything possible about a group or idol.

Fansubs and translations are basically the blood of the international fandom. I think it’s safe to say that about 7/10 (it maybe be more or less, it’s obviously impossible to know the real numbers) of the idol fandom doesn’t speak Japanese. Most of us, including myself of course, rely heavily on fansubs. But since there are way too many idols, not enough hours in the day, and not enough English/Japanese speaking fans, a lot of groups have hardly anything translated.

And because of that I kind of feel like I’m only 1/2 a fan of a lot of groups. When I like a group I like to absorb myself in them completely. I like to not only listen to their music and watch their concerts, but I like to know what each song is about. I like to know everything about them. I like to get to know a little bit about each member and then picked that one who’s got that something special that makes me go, “Yes, this is exactly my type of idol.” And then I like to put my full support in them.

As of right now a lot of my favorite idols are based on physical appearance or being drawn to how they perform in concerts or by the impression I get of them. And I really don’t like doing that because I think idols have a much broader appeal than cuteness. Take MomoClo for example, my initial oshi was Momoka. I thought she was this cute little spunky girl, and that was literally my basis for liking her. That was my oshi reasoning for a while. When I finally started to see some MomoClo subs happening I realized that Kanako was actually the member for me. I thought she was incredibly charming and I was drawn to her energetic and cheerful nature.

I think a much better example of this is with my Johnny’s initial oshis. With Johnny’s it was of course a lot easier to fall into picking members based solely on looks. And my initial oshis for each group were as follows: Ninomiya Kazunari, Akanishi Jin, Fujigaya Taisuke, Nakajima Yuto. And it was based on which  members I considered to be the most attractive. My favorites are now Aiba Masaki, Tanaka Koki (I know not a member anymore but he works for the point), Tamamori Yuta, Nakajima Yuto. My favorite member in JUMP is still Yuto but the point I’m making is really about my second favorite member Okamoto Keito. Now these are all members I never thought were even a little attractive. You don’t understand like I used to think a lot of silly things about them for completely shallow reasons.

But the thing is the moment I learned more about each group the more I could form actual opinions about the members and picked members for their personality. I was drawn to Aiba’s cheerful and playful nature, Koki’s funny side and the fact that he was incredibly sweet, Yuta’s airheadedness, and Keito’s awkwardness. Plus as I’ve said, I also do that thing where the more I like someone as a person the more physically attracted to them I become. I actually think all of my favorites are pretty gorgeous and can’t even believe there was a time that I didn’t.

To this day the only Johnny’s members that I liked initially that I am still a fan of are Nishikido Ryo, Nakajima Yuto, and Kawai Fumito. I’ve obviously always liked Ryo’s bluntness, it was perfect when I found out how energetic Yuto was, and the first time I came across Fumito was because of his impressions, so it’s always been personality from him.

And it’s because of this when people ask me who my favorite member of a certain idol group is a lot of the times I never feel 100% confident with my choice. Sure Maeshima Ami is probably one of the cutest idols that has ever existed, but does that mean she’d be my favorite SUPER GiRLS member? I do love how happy and energetic Mori Shiori is during Passpo concerts, but does that mean she’d be my type of idol? Hibi Mikoto has an incredibly adorable singing voice, but how do I know if she’s the best member of Dream5. And the list goes on and on.

And it’s not just not knowing everything about the members that bums me out, it’s not knowing what a song is about that also gets me down. When I hear a song on the radio for the first time it usually take me about 4 minutes to decide if I like it or not. But with idol songs it’s tricky, sometimes it takes me 4 months to decide if I like a song or not.

I obviously usually judge if an idol song is good initially by the music or how it’s sung. But that only really determines if the song is catchy or not, not really if it’s a good song or not. I have to wait for translations before I 100% can say, “hey, this is a great song.” There have been tons of times where I was super into a song and then read the translation and found out it was actually an awful song. Like I did with Berryz Koubou’s Ai no Dangan. Or how about the times where I was just not feeling the music or the way a song was sung and completely wrote it off until I read the lyric translation and found out it was actually a beautiful song? Like what I did with Passpo’s Sakura Komachi. Which is probably why I did not like Koisuru Fortune Cookie until I heard JKT48’s English version of the song. Since I instantly knew what the song was about I could make a connection to the song while I was listening to it.

And whenever I think of that I’m instantly transported back to school when I told one of my classmates that I like Japanese music. And instead of doing the first thing people usually do when you tell them this, which in my experience has been mocking, he did the second thing which was asking me, “How? You can’t even understand it.” My response was of course, “Yes, I can.” His retort was then a mocking tone of, “No you can’t.” The conversation then swiftly ended with me matter-of-factly saying, “Yes, I can.”

I of course didn’t have the time to explain to him, and quite frankly didn’t feel like explaining, that even though I couldn’t understand it I still could understand it. That you can find practically anything, within good reason, Japanese related you want either translated or subtitled if you knew where to look. And if you were willing to wait.

But having everything subtitled does make you a bit lazy to an extent, because my main complaint in this whole post could probably be solved if I just knew Japanese. I’ve been in the Japanese music fandom for many a years, September of this year actually marks my 10th year listening to Japanese music. You’d think I’d be able to speak it by now. But tons of circumstances have kept me from really attempting to. Most of my time was spent learning the language I was taught in school, which was Spanish, and because of that I had almost no motivation to learn another language. The fact that my mother would never allow me to have anything Japanese related for the longest time. Along with, of course, my own shear lazyness.

Nothing is really stopping me from learning it now, except the fact that it is an incredibly daunting task. Japanese is one of the hardest languages to learn. It’s a category V language, a language that is considered exceptionally difficult for native English speakers. And it apparently takes 88 weeks, or 2,200 class hours to learn. And that’s only to become proficient. I don’t dare to think how long it takes to become 100% fluent or native speaker level.

Maybe not knowing which idols favorite food is sweet potatoes, or not knowing which idol is funny, isn’t the biggest deal in the world. But at the same time it’s incredibly frustrating. I consider idol music to be one of my main hobbies. A hobby that includes many elements. I’ve got a new PV to watch practically every week, news to keep up with every day, dozens or so new concerts and albums a year, blogs and interviews to read, dramas, variety shows, movies, and miscellaneous other TV appearances. And I like that there’s so much going on that I’m never bored. But at the same time if I don’t understand what’s going on can I really enjoy it?

I know that there are a lot of fans out there that watch things raw and still enjoy it. That’s never been for me, and I don’t really understand how people can do that. If I don’t understand what’s going on it sucks all of the fun out. And it ruins it for when it does, if it does, get subbed. I’d honestly rather wait months or years for something to be subbed than to watch it without subs. Unless it’s something you don’t need subs for like music shows or Momusu’s recent Dokkiri.

I think being a non-Japanese speaker in the idol fandom is like being someone in the comic book fandom who has to read comics with half of the pages ripped out. It can certainly be done, and you can still wholeheartedly enjoy it, but it’s not really the same. And you never do get over the disappointment of knowing you’re missing out on something you see everyone else so easily enjoying. I guess for the time being us non-Japanese speaking idol fans have to just wait for the rest of the pages.

100Covers

Ok, guys I’m jumping right into part 2 of my end of the year ranking extravaganza. Bringing you numbers 70-41. This is more of the mediocre or average section of the rankings. Songs that are so ok that they barely stand out to me, but I still like them and will listen to every once in a while. But still aren’t good enough to be in the coveted top 20 or 10 positions.

Let’s get in this int full swing.

Top 100 singles of 2013 part 1

100Covers

Are you guys ready once again for JM’s year end of the year ranking extravaganza? I know that I am. As you may have noticed from the title I’m doing things a little differently than previous years. Instead of ranking top 10 best singles, top 10 worst singles, and top 10 album songs like I usually do, I will just be ranking the 100 idol singles that were released this year! I actually had no intention of doing a top 100 ranking, but while I was making a list of all the idol singles that were released this year I mentioned on twitter that there were nearly 100 singles released. And one of my lovely followers suggested that I just add in a few more singles and make it a top 100. And since I liked the idea, and always try to do posts that people suggest, I decided to go for it.

I added in a few graduated member’s of AKB48 singles to make it fit to be a 100. However, shortly after I finished writing this ranking I realized that I forgot to include Yamapi’s solo singles. And I apologize for that. But there was now way I was going to make this a top 102 just to include Yamapi in this. So the shorthand is this: is I absolutely loved Que Sera Sera. If it was included it would have probably been in the top 20 at least. Summer Nude ’13 was just ok. It would have probably floated somewhere around 43 or so. I didn’t include Akanishi Jin’s singles and not because I forgot, but because I don’t really care about them.

Obviously there were way more idol singles released in 2013 than just 100, but I only included idol groups that I either follow or post about on this blog. So the idols featured in this ranking are as follows: Morning Musume, C-ute, Berryz Koubou, S/mileage, Juice=Juice, Satoumi Movement units, AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, HKT48, Maeda Atsuko, Itano Tomomi, Kasai Tomomi, Watanabe Mayu, Kashiwagi Yuki, Takahashi Minami, Kuramochi Asuka, Not Yet, no3b, Arashi, NEWS, KAT-TUN, Hey! Say! JUMP, Tegomass, Kanjani8, Kis-My-Ft2, YuiKaori, Momoiro Clover Z, Passpo, SUPER GiRLS, Fudanjuku, Dempagumi.inc, Cheeky Parade, Fairies, and Dream5.

Ranking 100 singles was an extremely daunting task and took me days and days to write. Some days I regretted ever saying that I was going to do this and writing felt like such a chore. I lacked the creative juices to continue. But other days I had an absolute blast writing it. I was on fire a few times and knocked out 15 or 20 songs in a short amount of time.

So, it’s really up in the air if I will do this next year or ever again. I will tell you one thing though, if I do decide to do it again I will start writing it in November just so I won’t feel so rushed to get it done and posted before the end of the year. Don’t ever let me go on hiatus and come back near the end of the year again. Better yet, don’t ever let me go on hiatus again.

Anyway, on to what you’ve all been waiting for the actual ranking! Since 100 is such a large number I decided to post this ranking in parts. So please enjoy part 1 or 4.

Have yourself a very idol Christmas 3

Christmas47

Well, hello there readers long time no see. If you haven’t noticed I haven’t updated this blog in almost two weeks. But don’t worry I’m not leaving you guys again. I’ve already said that that’s not going to happen. No, instead I’ve been working on my end of the year posts. Which is a top 100 singles ranking, for anyone who doesn’t follow me on twitter. Since that was too time consuming I decide to 86 my album song ranking. Though if there’s outcry from my readers I will make that post after the holidays.

But that’s not what this post is about. I decided since tomorrow is Christmas Eve it’s the perfect time to post my annual idol Christmas spam. Which is actually only my 3rd Christmas spam in my blog’s 5 year history. But it’s a tradition now. I’ve been collecting pictures all month to make to make this my biggest and best Christmas post. I collected a whopping 152 pictures for you guys. Which is over double the amount from last year.

I’d also like to take this time to wish my readers a Happy Holidays. Merry early Christmas and Happy early Kwanzaa. Happy belated Hanukkah and Happy belated Winter Solstice. As well as everything and anything in between. Or even happy nothing at all.

Also, I’ll see you guys after Christmas where you can look forward to my end of the year posts. Though if you care about seeing how my Christmas is going you know I’m totally going to still be active and twitter and possibly tumblr.

So Happy Holidays again and enjoy the spam after the cut! Also credit to yoshiko_mama for all the Johnny’s scans.

MomoClo has Gounn all out in new PV

MomoCloGounn

So, once I made my comeback and got everything else settled about what I missed I thought long and hard about what PV I should review, since I’m jumping right back in. And I decided it made perfect sense to pick a PV I absolutely loved. Though maybe that’s a bad idea since my reviews for things I hate are usually way more well written. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it a 100 times easier to explain why I hate something than why I love something.

And once I thought like that it became so obvious that I had to review MomoClo’s newest single. Since I’m so in love with the song. And it’s the first time in a while I’ve really liked MomoClo’s singles. Not to say I’ve hated any of them, it’s just lately their singles have been just ok. They’ve been skating by without really making an impressions. So, sorry Amita and Arashi I’ll review your PVs soon.

Before I start this review I want to point out that I know absolutely nothing about Thailand or Thai culture. Except maybe Angkor Wat. But after googling it it’s actually in Cambodia, so I don’t even know that. Oh wait, I lied I know that Bangkok is a big party city. (Thank you Orange Caramel) But I certainly know absolutely nothing about their ancient history or current culture that they are referencing in this video. In fact for a hot second I thought this video was about India. As you can tell the education in America is as wonderful as you hear.

What I immediately love about this is how absolutely visually stunning it is. There are about 7 or 8 different sets for this PV. I use the term sets loosely because obvious everything in this PV is CG. But despite that you can barely even tell that the PV isn’t real. The special effects for this PV are so incredibly well done. It gives it such a polished and professional look. Which is funny because every idol group are professionals but with the budget of some of their PVs you can easily forget that they didn’t film it in the shed in their backyard, and then finish it up at home with Adobe After Effects.

No, it looks like some serious money was spent on this and it definitely shows. Each set is more vivid and vibrant than the last. The entire PV is eye catching from start to finish, and there’s so much going on in each scene that you don’t know exactly where to focus.

Not only is the entire PV itself a treat for the eyes, so are the members. Well, the members are always a treat for the eyes. But I mean the way they are dressed specifically. They are wearing pretty obvious traditional Thai garb. And I have to commend them for how much they stuck to what the actual outfits look like while still keeping their cute idol flare. But I must admit I don’t really like those outfits at all. They are a little much in my opinion. I prefer the outfits Berryz wore for Cha Cha Sing, but obviously since they already wore them MomoClo couldn’t turn around and wear the same thing. In this PV I actually prefer the outfits they are wearing that kind of look like plain white furisode, but are most likely some Thai outfit that I am unfamiliar with. The plain white gives them a very fresh, clean, and natural look. Well, that and the fact that we can actually see their hair in those outfits.

As a whole everything just works perfectly together. I think if any one element from this PV was missing it wouldn’t be the same. The PV is just spectacular and I can not get enough of it. I can honestly say with full confidence this is the best CG idol PV I have ever seen. And also maybe one of the best idol PVs I’ve ever seen in general. It’s fluid, it’s enchanting, and it transports you to Thailand for nearly 6 minutes. Just a phenomenal job all around.

Gounn

At first glance this reminds me of a circus tent.

Gounn2

I never knew they had gold mountains in Thailand.

Gounn3

Better stay away from hand island.

Gounn4

I can now see that they are in fact not hands. They’re….what are they?

Gounn5

How is possible for Kanako to look this pretty and cute at the same time?

Gounn6

What do turtles have to do with Thailand?

Gounn7

This is beautiful.

Gounn8

Wink.

Gounn9

Adorable.

Gounn10

I love these scenes, they remind me of a kaleidoscope.

Gounn11

I think Shiori has one of my favorite sets.

Gounn12

Reni combing her hair makes me think of Gift of the Magi. I don’t think that has anything to do with Thailand though.

Gounn13

Them dimples.

Gounn14

This is really cool.

Gounn15

Well at least they are authentic looking.

Gounn16

Ayaka is too cute, I’m definitely a Gounner. (All my puns are based on the assumption that Gounn is pronounced the way I think it’s pronounced. XD)

Gounn17

Look at how much effort they put into this set.

Gounn18

Just spectacular.

Gounn19

I was just thinking how Shiori looks a little mature in this PV and then she does this.

Gounn20

Cutie.

Gounn21

The dance isn’t much to look at is it?

Gounn22

Oh their hair is braided at the back! I thought their hair was just kinda shoved in the head piece.

Gounn23

I wonder what she’s writing.

Gounn24

Aren’t magic lamps from Middle Eastern cultures?

Gounn25

Now I prefer these headpieces a 100 times more.

Gounn26

All of these effects are just fantastic.

Gounn27

From this angle it kind of looks like a cake.

Gounn28

What is Kanako even doing?

What I’ve missed, how I feel, and what’s to come

SK

Now that I’m back to blogging you’d think I’d have everything perfectly thought out. And you’d be absolutely wrong. I’m like a chicken with my head cut off. I’m running around here in such a daze. I’m like a coma patient who’s suddenly woke up after 6 and a half months who is trying to catch up to all the news he’s missed in the time he was out. Except I was awake the entire time and remember everything, so I’m not like a coma patient at all. It’s like I was looking into a big window…you know what I can’t even get my metaphors in order how am I expected to quickly get my blog in order? Let’s just say it’s not as easy as you’d think.

I’m at this point where I’m not sure if I’m supposed to address everything I’ve missed or pretend nothing has happened and pretend this is a new blog and I start from day 1. Get your tissues ready, because I’m going to do the second one. Mostly because it’s the easiest option. But don’t fret I am still going to go over some important opinions on the big things that I’ve missed. But it’s going to be extremely watered down. because let’s be honest I can’t fully remember every emotion I was feeling at the time and I can’t remember absolutely everything I should have been blogging about. So, let’s break this down by agency.

Hello!Project:

H!P3

As you know H!P is my first great idol love and absolutely nothing or nobody can touch it or top it. Now, I’m sorry if that seems extremely biased. But at the same time I make no apologizes. EVERY idol fan has that one group or one agency they consider their number one. Since I personally follow about 20 idol groups and cover about 25 on this blog in total, give me a break.

That being said it’s mostly to say that I still have very fluffy warm feelings for H!P. However, I am starting to get extremely bored with H!P’s song being more and more interchangeable. For a while H!P groups had a distinct sound. C-ute was the group focused on intense dancing so you could expect great dances and dance numbers from them. Berryz Koubou was this quirky, funky group that got the songs you’d never expect them to get because of their age. It was the group where H!P really went all out and took risks with their music. S/mileage was this full dose of sugary idol cuteness and fun. And perfectly balanced things out and is also my personal favorite type of music. Buono was this interesting rock sound. Morning Musume is this unique entity where there sound is usually constantly changing. You could have a ska song, a mature song, and a dubstep song in close proximity and for some reason it worked. And then Juice=Juice stepped on the scene and we got this jazzy adult themed group which was a breathe of fresh air.

Now, that’s H!P at it’s best to me. But the current state of H!P is nowhere near that glory. Instead every single group is making the same song. It’s danceable, it’s electronic, it’s probably got some autotune, and it’s absolutely mature. Where’s the variety in that? Every once in a while Berryz will throw us a fun song. But it’s not really enough. And S/mileage’s fun songs like Yattaruchan and Ee ka even sound too mature for a fun song. And who’s bright idea was it to give J=J a bland and too sweet song like Hajimete wo Keikenchuu? And don’t even get me started on how they really need to bring Buono back already.

That’s how I feel about the music. And I honestly feel like everyone else loves the overall sound. But why? Hasn’t the dance thing been done to death in H!P? Sadly, I think we’ve got a few more years of this. So, there’s not much I can do about that. I just have to hope when the 12th gen comes or that other Kenshuusei group were promised ever gets formed they’ll inject some much needed young flare. But H!P and Tsunku like to screw us around because they know where in too deep to really make a stink about it.

MM2

That being said my love for Morning Musume has skyrocketed. Morning Musume has always been my favorite H!P group and lately my love for them has been on full blast. Just because I am so incredibly proud of my girls. They are working so hard and it really shows in their improved singing and dancing. They are also slowing clawing their way back to their former glory. They are getting consecutive number one singles, they are getting more opportunists to perform on music shows. They were on Music Station for God’s sake. They are even singing the theme for the Japanese Olympic team. Like wow they are doing so well. And honestly just thinking about this makes me so so happy for them. That I’ve loved this girls for years, and loved them during what’s considered their lowest point in history, and the masses are finally starting to see what’s so great about them. And I honestly couldn’t be happier or more proud.

Johnny’s:

Arashi2

I honestly can’t remember the last things I said about Johnny’s before I took my “hiatus.” But I can say that my love fro Arashi has exploded, but I’m not sure when it started. But Arashi is my absolute top Johnny’s group now. Standing well above the rest. Completely smashing former NEWS to pieces. Though anyone that has ever read my blog is well aware why that wasn’t exactly a hard thing to do. But I love Arashi so much now that it’s hard to ever think of a time when I didn’t. I have so much love for them that it’s impossible to think of how there was ever a time I liked another group more than Arashi. If this 6 month break did anything it was give me enough time to watch a good chunk of Arashi’s variety shows. Way more than I’d seen before. And that’s where the attachment formed. I now consider Arashi to be on the same level as Morning Musume. And if you don’t know anything about me just know that that is HUGE. I’ve said a few times before if I could only listen to 2 idol groups for the rest of my life I would be completely satisfied with Arashi and Morning Musume being them.

Koki

KAT-TUN, oh KAT-TUN where do I even start about? Did you know they actually lost a member? Imagine that? Oh, it was Tanaka Koki, totally not a big deal at all. Except this was the absolute worst thing to happened to KAT-TUN ever. This was the most devastating lose that Johnny’s has experienced since I became a fan. Who cares if Eggplant, dead fish eyes, poison tongue, and smoke stacks left or where fired from their groups. They all stayed within the agency. Except for chimney but hey we still have his brother who was obviously the real golden boy within the Morimoto brothers. This is Koki we’re talking about. Koki, my beloved Koki. Also known as Tanaka the absolute only reason I’ve ever listened to or cared about KAT-TUN in the slightest Koki. This is a gigantic heartbreak. Koki was one of my favorite Johnny’s members of all time.

And I’ll say it when he was officially fired I did cry. Not full water works. More like I teared up and maybe had a Crybaby moment. (Remember cause he could only cry one tear? No? Go watch the movie then.) It all started with me finding his newest penis pictures released scandal hilarious. Of course right after that legions of fans were whining that this meant the end for him. And with my usual flippant attitude I went, “Nah, that’ll never happen.” Well, someone please remind me to never say that because I’ve never been right about anything ever. (Except calling that Akanishi Jin was leaving KAT-TUN and Arihara Kanna was getting the boot from C-ute)

His firing hit me like a ton of bricks. So, I’m at this weird moment where I have absolutely no reason to listen to KAT-TUN anymore. As you’ll recall I said the same thing about NEWS when Ryo and Yamapi left. But I can honestly say that this time feels different. With NEWS I loved NEWS as a whole first and Ryo second. With KAT-TUN I loved Koki first and KAT-TUN second. So, I don’t know anymore. Hearing his rap cut from the recent episode of Music Station hurt. A lot.

HeySayJUMP

I actually don’t really have anything important to say about the other Johnny’s groups other than: NEWS’ Seven Colors is mediocre and release a new single already! And Hey! Say! JUMP is finally getting a new single, and my beloved Keito actually has a line. Stop the world.

AKB48 and sister groups:

AKB48

I’m gonna be honest with you if I’m not blogging about these groups I don’t pay attention to them that often on my own. I blog about them 90% for my dear readers. As I’ve said 100 times now. However, I do admit I’ve become increasingly addicted to Kitagawa Kenji for the past couple of months. I always thought I just liked SKE48 more than AKB48. But I’ve come to the conclusion that every other group is just better than AKB48. I’m sorry but AKB48 is too used sitting on the female idol throne that they don’t even try anymore musically. It’s SKE48 and NMB48 that have the interesting and fun songs now. Since they are working hard to forge their own name and get out of AKB48’s shadows.

Other idol groups:

Dream5

I have to admit I find it pretty difficult to keep up with the other groups I follow if I’m not blogging about them. Usually I’d have to make sure I checked up on them frequently so I could immediately make a post for my lovely readers. But left on my own I don’t find out about new singles until the PV is out. And I don’t find out about new PVs until about a week or two after they were released. Which is not really good.

MomoCLo

So how do I feel about some of these groups? I’m glad you asked. Momoiro Clover Z is back to impressing me. Coming off of their pretty disappointed 5th Dimension album, their newest single Gounn blew me away. I am in love with absolutely everything about SUPER GiRLS newest singles. I think the songs they chose to cover were perfect, and I of course love that my beloved Ami got her own solo.

Fudanjuku

Surprisingly I’ve been pretty addicted to Dream5. If you recall before I stopped blogging I said how I discovered 3 new idol groups to love, Dream5 being one of them. Well I am absolutely enamored by them. Their music is fun, upbeat, energetic, and happy. I feel completely at ease and in high spirits just listening to them. Hibi Mikoto has become my favorite member because of her adorable voice and her adorable face. She kind of looks like a mouse, but in a cute way. Fudanjuku has become another one of the new groups that I have been following pretty closely. Danso Revolution has be come one of my favorite songs lately. And I am still having confusing and conflicting feels about Seto Kouki.

So, that’s very quickly my thoughts and feelings on some things. So, what’s o come you ask? Well you can still look forward to the same PV reviews, news pieces, over analyzations, and thought out blog entries you’ve come to love and expect from JM over the years. You can also look forward to my December staples, my idol Christmas picspam and my end of the year countdown. This year may be different, but keep in mind I make no promise. Someone on twitter suggested I do a top 100 singles countdown.

IdolSongs

Since there are close to 100 idol singles of groups that I follow released this year. Let’s see if I’m crazy enough to take the challenge.

I also had a good rant about Sakurai Sho and Johnny’s marriage on twitter. I feel like I can expand that a bit and make it into a really thought out blog post. So, if you’ve read the main points already on twitter I’m sorry. But if you haven’t read it yet, come on man don’t seek it out and spoil it for yourself.

So many idols so little time

TIF

It’s blatantly obvious to anyone that stops by and reads my blog for 5 minutes that I am a gigantic idol fan. But you’d have to be a daily reader of my blog, or someone who just stumbled upon it and reads more than one post, to really get a grasp of just how many idol groups I follow. I cover somewhere in the range of 17 different idols/ idol groups on my blog, not counting sub-groups. Of those 18 I’m extremely dedicated to around 14 of them give or take. Sorry, I just can’t seem to bring myself to be anything more than a casual fan of AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, or HKT48. I actually do follow a few more groups, but as I’ve said before I prefer to only cover major idol groups over indie ones. Mostly because indie groups like Up Up Girls don’t release PVs, so what am I really going to blog about?

You can tell which idol groups are my favorite because they are the groups I blog about the most. And despite promising my readers to cover nearly every idol group out there I only end up covering the groups I have a real attachment towards. That’s why I haven’t really made good on my word to cover Kanjani8, Sexy Zone, Fairies, or AAA. Maybe one of these days I’ll have a KAT-TUN moment with them when I go, “No, this group is amazing now. Their music has gotten heaps better, I’m officially a fan now.” But then again, who knows? I actually do like Fairies, but I seem to always forget about them. Maybe I should stop doing that? On the other hand, things seem pretty grim when it comes to Sexy Zone. I almost like Sexy Zone’s Real Sexy, but then I hear Bad Boys, and after I’m done cringing it pushes me 8,000 feet away from the fan side of the invisible line that separates fans of the group from people who could care less.

So, if I make a post about an idol group on this blog it’s serious business. No, really it is. I think the main reason I’m so critical about idol groups is because I follow so many already. You might think it’s an easy task, but it actually isn’t. I’ve seen idol fans out there who literally follow just about every idol groups there is. Which is just mind boggling to me since there’s 30+ idol groups if not more. I’m actually not sure since I don’t keep proper tabs on indie groups. I seriously cannot fathom how people do it. Since I follow so many idol groups following them evenly has become something of well oiled machine. Where I go, “Ok, I’ll watch this DVD magazine now, and save those variety shows for another time. I’ll watch this TV apperance now, and save this one for later. This idol group has a new concert so I’ll watch this today and wait to watch this drama later.” Ironically, I even give up idol time to blog about idols.

But it’s not only that, I feel like I can’t really consider myself a true fan of the group unless I know absolutely every thing about each member’s personalities, know all of their songs, and can recall the entire groups history from memory. But I blame that 100% on blogging. I feel like if I don’t know all of that about a group I have no business blogging about them, which is maybe 85% of the reason I don’t blog about the 48 groups that often. I also feel my readers, as well as potential readers, will write off this blog off entirely if I don’t know enough about the groups. After all I’m blogging about them so shouldn’t I have all of this knowledge down pat?

Since I have so many idol groups I follow it’s always tricky to start listening to new ones. I have to make sure they are idol group I really want to follow, because I can’t just add any old group to the chunk of time I have dedicated to idols. Sadly, I don’t have 24 hours in a day to dedicate to idols, so I get my idol time whenever I can. It’s a sporadic mess really. So, I then think, shaves off a little Arashi time for this groups. A little less Morning Musume attention now so I’ll have time for that group. And I start thinking if I have the time, or want to spare the time, for this group. Which is another reason why I can’t imagine how people follow like 30 groups at a time. Where do they get the time? It feels like I’m drowning in my 14 or so groups sometimes. So, any new groups has to be pretty special.

And that’s really what this blog post is all about. I can confidently say I think I found a few new special groups. And they are special because my interest was sparked in groups like Sakura Gakuin, Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, LinQ, Dream5, and BiS, and I decided I don’t have time for them now and can go back to them later. It is sad because I’m participatory fond of all of them, but I simply do not have the time to follow every idol group in existence.

That being said, the first group is Fudanjuku.

Fudanjuku

Now Fudanjuku are hardly a new group, or hardly a group no one knows about. I mean, I’ve been aware of them for a few years now. I even made a blog post about them a couple years ago saying that I was fooled and thought they were men and also saying that I didn’t really get the appeal of a danso group, and didn’t really undestand what type of fans were fans of Fudanjuku.

Well, it’s safe to say that I do get the appeal now. I’ve always been meaning to give them another shot coming from a more open minded mindset since I always see people mention them on twitter, tumblr, and idol blogs. And after listening to songs I was suggested on twitter, everything just started to click. For one, their music is good. I mean really really good. So, good that I honestly regret not listening to them sooner. Kaze Ikki is slowly becoming one of my favorite idol songs of all time.

And two, they are seriously one of the best male idol groups without even really being a male idol group. A lot of the time they make everything I want Johnny’s to make but don’t. I like that some of their songs have this gruff/tough sound to them. Don’t get me wrong I do prefer happy upbeat idol music regardless of the gender, but sometimes I do want to hear a tougher, sexier song from Johnny’s. KAT-TUN and Kisumai are in charge of that, but with both groups there’s always a 50/50 chance that their songs are gonna end up being good.

Thirdly, girl crush overload. I guess it’s because they got better wigs and better outfits, but I get their danso appeal now. Because I have such a girl crush on 2 of the members because of how boyish they are. It’s the same girl crush on have of f(x)’s Amber. And probably the reason I’ve been so into Sudou Maasa lately. My interest peeked a lot after her danso H!P Time episode.

I have to say that Akazono Kojirou and Seto Koki are my type, and if they were actually guys I’d probably be a way bigger fan of them. Especially Seto Koki, I probably wish she was a real guy more than I should. Koki also apparently likes conspiracies which makes him (is it better to refer to them as him when they’re in danso?) go up a few points.
I also really appreciate the Onaji Jidai ni Umareta Wakamonotachi PV. Where they are all scruffy and dirty running through dirt and water. It’s a PV I wish Johnny’s would make. Because honestly it’s a lot manlier than a lot of the PVs that come out of Johnny’s.

Also, props to them for being able to sing like men and still sound amazing. I’m a terrible singer with my natural voice, so it’s basically sorcery to me that they are able to sound good singing in both types of voices.

The second group is Cheeky Parade.

CheekyParade

Cheeky Parade is another Avex idol group that debuted right after SUPER GiRLS on their idol sub-label. So, it makes absolute perfect sense why I’m so attached to them already. I absolutely love everything about SUPER GiRLS I think they are a perfect idol group. If you’re an idol fan and aren’t a fan of SUPER GiRLS all I have to say is, “Why not? And you’re really missing out.”

What I like about Cheeky Parade is that they are similar to SUPER GiRLS, but at the same time they are completely different. While Cheeky Parade is a very cutesy idol group image wise, musically they have a more mature and polished sound to them. And I am completely impressed at how talented the girls are at singing. And the girls have a deeper tone compared to most idol singers. Which gives them a very distinct, unique, and maybe even a little harder sound. Which makes Cheeky Parade’s songs this combination of cutesy idol songs with a slightly harder edge. And they are such a joy to listen to.

Out of all the girls I am most impressed with Marin. Let’s be honest she’s like the goddess of Cheeky Parade. She’s absolutely gorgeous and she has the best singing voice in the group, in my opinion. Her voice is just pleasant to listen to and like butter to the ears. It’s hard to decide if I’m captivatedby the perfect idol that is Marin or if I’ll completely fall into the spiral of cuteness of that is Yuria or Seran.

What else is great about Cheeky Parade is that they’ve only released 3 singles, and no album, so it’s incredibly easy to catch up to them. And even easier to follow them.

The third and final idol group is Dempagumi.inc.

DempagumiInc

I’m still not 100% sure how I discovered Dempagumi.inc in the first place. I guess there one of those idol groups that I just stumbled upon. Bit however I did come across them I’m glad I did because they are just so weird, over the top, and ridiculous. And I love every last second of it.

You know how I love the weirdness that MomoClo throws our way, it’s that same weird spirit that draws me to Dempagumi.inc. Their outfits are very elaborate and each PV by them just looks like a hot mess of crazy.

The only real draw back of them is that their singing isn’t exactly that great, even for an idol group. Sometimes their singing is so bad it’s almost hard to listen to. But I’m hoping that their crazy antics and costumes make me overlook that.

It’s really difficult to really find anything on this group. But so far I seem to be drawn to Mirin because of how adorable she is.

MomoClo fail to bring enough crazy in their new PV

MomoiroCloverZ5thDimension

A PV for Neo Stargate, a track off of Momoiro Clover Z’s upcoming second album, 5th Dimension, was released. And I have to say released unexpectedly released because they didn’t release any PVs to promote their first album.

I’m a little disappointed and underwhelmed with this PV to be honest. I usually revel in MomoClo’s unique brand of crazy, but with this PV there’s hardly anything weird going on I am left wanting more, a lot more. this PV is tame and lackluster to compare to what MomoClo usually releases. The song itself isn’t even high energy enough for me. Which is probably another reason why the PV seems so flat to me. With a tamer song they can’t really go all out with this PV.

This PV starts off with MomoClo locked in some sort of container or possible alien pod. Hey, the song is called Neo Stargate after all. Seeing them in that container flashes me back to Lady Gaga. And I would just like to point out, before any disgruntled MomoClo fans jump down my throat, that this PV is 1,000% nothing like Lady Gaga’s videos. Just the fact that they are in pods in a white room reminds me of how Lady Gaga and the other Lady Gaga clones, for lack of better word, woke up in pods in the Bad Romance video. Obviously the Bad Romance video is about Lady Gaga being prepped to be sold as a sex slave, which is nothing like MomoClo’s video. But that’s just what the pod scenes made me immediately think of.

The rest of the video is then just the girls dancing in front of the pods. While I do love the dance for this song, that’s boring. Completely boring and uneventful. Sure they do magically change their outfits, which is kinda cool. But they change their outfits into this hideous mix between a ballerina and a figure skater. They also wear these weird pointed masks I guess to add that weird element that MomoClo is so fond of using, but once weird gimmick is not enough. It honestly seems like a lazy after thought. And since this PV is a whopping 7 minutes long it feels never ending.

The PV only gets mildly interesting when they are randomly dancing in that white tunnel. The dance becomes so weird at this point that it looks like the girls are having a mild seizure. Which actually isn’t a bad thing in this case.

Their intense dancing causes a system overload and destroys what I’m now guessing are probably stargates. Right? I mean they could be. To me stargates are now synonymous with those giant circles from, well, Stargate, or even the giant machine Jodie Foster used in Contact. But I guess they could be pods. It’s never really explained how or why MomoClo destroy those pods. It probably has something to do with that phantom lightning. Or maybe if I could understand Japanese that crazy scientist in the beginning most likely explained it.

NeoStargate

Ok, Momoclo are some test subjects.

NeoStargate2

Oh come on with this guy! He looks like Albert Einstein’s and Colonel Sander’s Japanese love child.

NeoStargate3

This is supposed to be all of MomoClo’s vital signs, but instead of red there’s blue. Did Akari rejoin and not tell anyone?

NeoStargate4

I don’t get the reason for having random White people in this PV.

NeoStargate5

Boy, that looks likes like some top of the line technology. How long is Japan going to keep this secret?

NeoStargate6

Ok, this mask disappearing thing is pretty cool.

NeoStargate7

These have to be some of the most boring close-up shots I’ve ever seen.

NeoStargate8

What’s even worse is they are wearing the exact same outfits that they are too matchy and completely blend together.

NeoStargate9

At least something mildly interesting is finally starting to happen.

NeoStargate10

On no, their life liquid is seeping out.

NeoStargate11

Or I guess that was supposed to happen.

NeoStargate12

Ayaka does not like being trapped in there.

NeoStargate13

See they look way too similar now. Give them a little something to make them unique.

NeoStargate14

I love how they’re rising up like they’re vampires.

NeoStargate16

And the weird dancing begins. Though if I was cooped up in there for God knows how long, I’d probably do the same thing.

NeoStargate17

Look at Momoka’s spaghetti arms.

NeoStargate18

This dance is weird but I like it.

NeoStargate19

Like what is this move even? Lol.

NeoStargate20

It’s fun to stay at the YMCA.

NeoStargate21

It’s about to get real now.

NeoStargate22

Those masks, those outfits, everything about them is just horrible.

NeoStargate23

It literally looks like someone just hot glued tacky jewels onto a leotard.

NeoStargate24

Even though their faces are covered, at least you differentiate each girl, and they don’t look so identical outfits wise anymore.

NeoStargate25

More weird dancing.

NeoStargate26

Dancing so strangely they broke the machine.

NeoStargate27

Sorry Momoka I can’t kiss you with that mask on, I might poke my eye out.

NeoStargate28

Z project huh? I wonder if they were willing participants.

NeoStargate29

So how are there 2 different MomoClos at once?

NeoStargate30

It’s cool that they are on a spaceship.

NeoStargate31

MomoClo sure like to be in space.

NeoStargate32

Wait what is Kanako doing? What’s that weird orb thing?

YuiKaori are positively shinning in their new PV

YuiKaoriShinyBlue

After waiting for what feels like forever the full version of the PV for YuiKaori’s new single, Shiny Blue is finally out.

I’m always excited to review my favorite current idol duo because they never fail to impress me. And that’s because YuiKaoi encompass everything I love about idols. Cute girls in frilly outfits singing happy music on a vibrant set. And that pretty much describes this PV and every single PV YuiKaori have ever released.

And in these PV we’re treated to just that in the form of YuiKaori looking so adorably cute I could cry, in five different outfits on four sets. Now that alone is extremely impresses. Most idols are lucky if they get two outfits on one set. But I suppose since there are only 2 members of YuiKaori they can afford it. Each set and each outfit is more adorable than the last one. And these things for a fan are of course very exciting. This PV leaves me completely satisfied because there’s just so much going on in it. Each scene is completely unique and there’s so many cute scenes that it’s impossible to hate this PV or get bored.

This video in my opinion is the best idol PV year so far and full-stop one of the best idol PVs I’ve ever seen. It’s a simple PV with so much going on. But there’s not too much going on that you don’t notice how gorgeous the girls are. This PV very much still relies on the charms of the girls to sell the PV. But at the same time there is a distinct, albeit almost subtle, storyline throughout the PV. It’s just seriously the perfect balance between the girls being charming and cute and an actual storyline.

This PV also mainly uses natural lighting for the PV and the girls styled in a very natural way. While still having the scene with them on a set dresses as gorgeous fabulous idols. And there’s also has an interesting and cute dance, in which the girls are wearing beyond adorable outfits in the dance scenes.

There are just no words to describe how perfect this PV is to me. Every single thing I want and love from a PV is included. What I just described above is what I also say I want idol PVs to be like. Maybe I was always asking for way too much, but maybe not because YuiKaori delivered that to a T. To an absolute perfect T, to such an extent that if I didn’t know any better it feels like the director personally read my blog and then made a PV from there.
I can’t get over or properly form words for the perfection that is this PV. Just everything about it is beautiful. I feel downright emotional over this PV. So, I will just sum up as best as I can what I love about this PV.

I love that the storyline in this PV is YuiKaori being architects and/or interior designers because that main plot is beautifully carried out and connected to the entire PV. It’s connected to the scenes in the bedroom where they feel defeated and adorably sad. It’s connected to the main scene of them at the table having a lot of fun sketching out exactly what they want to do. There are scenes with them just sitting near the windows which have nothing to do with the main plot, but I can forgive that because they look absolutely gorgeous there.

There are also scenes where YuiKaori are painting a blue sky which are my favorite scenes because they are so natural and playful there. They look like they had a lot of fun filming those scenes, so those scenes are juts downright a lot of fun to watch. I even love how that painting scene is connected to the main dance. Even though YuiKaori just painted a blue sky in their living room area I think it’s cute that it looks exactly like the blue sky on the set they are dancing on. And for a while I was convinced that throughout the PV YuiKaori were trying to build the set that they are actually dancing on in the PV. Which still might be the case, but since they just painted the sky in the living groom I’m not 100% about it anymore.

ShinyBlue

Nice outfit Kaori.

ShinyBlue2

They look beyond adorable in these outfits!

ShinyBlue3

However, I am a little annoyed that Yui always gets the slightly better outfit.

ShinyBlue4

Pretty baby.

ShinyBlue5

Wish I could tell what they are trying to build.

ShinyBlue6

Yui looks absolutely perfect here! That outfits, that hair, her adorable face, natural lighting! Just super super perfect.

ShinyBlue7

So cute.

ShinyBlue8

Kaori is so beautiful. I love how they both balance each other out, Yui being the cute one and Kaori being the pretty one.

ShinyBlue9

Too intense a smile there Kaori, it’s looking a little creepy.

ShinyBlue10

Still can’t tell if they’re supposed to be building the set they’re on.

ShinyBlue11

Cutie.

ShinyBlue12

Dead.

ShinyBlue13

I’m gonna make a bold statement and say Yui is one of the cutest, if not the cutest, idols out there. She’s at least in the top 5.

ShinyBlue14

Adorable.

ShinyBlue15

This dance is incredibly simple, but at the same time really cute.

ShinyBlue16

It looks like they are making dressers and a few tables maybe? I have no idea. XD

ShinyBlue17

They’re really accentuating Yui’s loli-ness here.

ShinyBlue18

I really love the parts of YuiKaori’s dances where they touch hands.

ShinyBlue19

Kaori even looks cute when she’s defeated.

ShinyBlue20

Another example of this dance playing off being simple but cute.

ShinyBlue21

Ok I give up, wtf is this supposed to be?

ShinyBlue22

Kaori just needs to stop being so cute and pretty.

ShinyBlue23

Cute.

ShinyBlue24

I love how Kaori’s making this, “what’s wrong with you?” face.

ShinyBlue25

How adorable!

ShinyBlue26

Why is she acting like she’s never seen painting before?

ShinyBlue27

They’re not even remotely painting this correctly. Lol.

ShinyBlue28

They still look like they’re having fun though.

ShinyBlue29

So cute.

ShinyBlue30

That’s not even the same shade of blue they were using 5 minutes ago.

ShinyBlue31

Yui is just so adorable!

ShinyBlue32

I don’t get it. Whatever they were building was too hard, so they just decided to pain the sky instead?

Passpo aren’t the belles of this ball

PasspoSakuraKomachi

Continuing with the late PV that left me uninspired before I bring you Passpo’s latest single Sakura Komachi. Which by now is a little over a month old.

I have to say I’ve all but given up on a decent PV for Passpo. They haven’t released a PV that really wowed me since ViVi Natsu. Wing was kind of cool, but I miss the fun flair and energy that Passpo’s first PVs after going major had. But I guess it’s too be expected since their music has gotten much heavier since then. I do dig their hard rock sound, but I would love to hear a lighter pop rock sound from them again. And I would obviously love a bright and happy PV again.

Sadly, I am not impressed with this PV at all. To be honest it’s boring, it’s lackluster. There’s hardly anything I like about it.

The main thing that sticks out to me are the outfits. What I always thought was cute about Passpo was that they always put each members image colors on their single outfits. While Passpo hasn’t completely stopped doing that, this is still the third PV where they haven’t. The outfits in this PV are actually kind of pretty. I just wish all of the black accents on the dresses were their image colors.

The PV itself is incredibly cheap it seems to be going into Hello!Poject territory. What I mean by that is there are only 2 sets. The main set is were the dance is being filmed and they really cheat with the set to save money. The set is either in the dark with spotlights shining on them or the set is light up like a normal stage. You know to make it seems like the dance is being shot on two completely different sets. It’s lazy technique that I’m honestly bored with. Since over half of the PV is dancing is really brings down the entire PV.

The rest of the PV consists of the girls laying under a cherry blossom tree wrapped up in a blanket giving the appearance of them being naked. Giving a dash of fanservice so the fans forget how the entire PV is garbage  Wow, even I thought that was a little mean to say about the PV. But you know what, I stand by that statement. It’s just not a good PV at all.

I do like the cherry blossom scenes though. I think they are really beautiful. The girls looks natural and gorgeous, which, as I’ve said, natural is always a plus for me. They are practically bathed in cherry blossom petals and just look so beautiful. They also look sexy, but in a very classy way. I am just in love with these scenes.

The only thing I’m not sure of is why Makoto is crying throughout the PV. At one point she even cries onto a cherry blossom. I’m just gonna guess it has something to do with the song.

On the subject of cherry blossoms, my absolute favorite part of the entire PV involves them. With a PV as simple as this it is a little hard to find positives about it, but I thought it was such a cool effect that while they were dancing blue colored cherry blossom petals rained down on them. How cool and subtle was that?

SakuraKomachi

Mako, why so sad?

SakuraKomachi2

Even though she’s supposed to be sad she still manages to look gorgeous.

SakuraKomachi3

I don’t really like the lighting of this set.

SakuraKomachi4

I actually prefer this set.

SakuraKomachi5

Gorgeous Ai.

SakuraKomachi6

Sako really stands out in this PV.

SakuraKomachi7

Lovely Morishi.

SakuraKomachi8

Adorable.

SakuraKomachi9

Mio’s hair is weird.

SakuraKomachi10

Lolz at Anna’s slightly arrogant face.

SakuraKomachi11

Makoto is super pretty here.

SakuraKomachi12

Just beautiful.

SakuraKomachi13

Gorgeous Yukky.

SakuraKomachi14

Such a cool effect.

SakuraKomachi15

Mio is such a cutie.

SakuraKomachi16

Awkward dance move.

SakuraKomachi17

Wink.

SakuraKomachi18

Adorable.

SakuraKomachi19

Haters to the left.

SakuraKomachi20

Sako really is such a standout.

SakuraKomachi21

Morishi looks so pretty.

SakuraKomachi22

Poor Naomi gets hardly any screen time.

SakuraKomachi23

I’ve never seen Mio look this natural.

SakuraKomachi24

Cutie.

SakuraKomachi25

Love how you can really see the petals here.

SakuraKomachi26

Lolz.

SakuraKomachi27

She just cried on that cherry blossom petal.

My favorite idols

A while ago on twitter I mentioned that I wanted to do an idol ranking. But I also mentioned that I was a little unsure of how to set it up. Should I just rank every member of every group that I follow, or should I just try to put my favorites in order of least favorite to favorite? Well, I decided to not do either. Since I follow so many different idol groups ranking every single member would be such a hassle and take so long. I also couldn’t do the second option because it would be absolutely impossible to really rank the idols, since I pretty much love my favorites evenly. Instead I’m just going to name my favorite idols and why. It’s not immediately what you think of when you hear the word ranking, but it is still technically a ranking since I am listing my favorites and excluding others.

So, without further adieu I present my ranking. I just want to note, that yes I am skipping all the 48 group members. Just because I am still such a novice  and haven’t had the time to properly watch their variety shows, so I don’t think I can properly judge a favorite yet. (Wow, I sound like a broken record with this. But I seriously do not have enough time to watch their variety shows. And it’s hard to say when in the foreseeable future I will have time. :/)

Aiba Masaki:

Now, this might be surprising to readers of my blog because I never really mention Aiba all that much. Mostly due to the fact that I really only review their PVs and not like dramas or variety shows. And during PVs reviews I mainly point out who looks good in the PV. Which is mostly Nino, since I think he’s the best looking member. And honestly I’m not that attracted to Aiba. He’s not really that good looking. However, when it comes to personality, and overall just how awesome the idol is, in Arashi for me it’s all about Aiba. He is my absolute favorite Arashi member hands down, no question. I just think everything about Aiba’s personality is appealing. I just love his bright and cheerful personality, because of that I think he’s the most entertainig member. He also seems like an all-around sweet and genuine person. On an episode of Himitsu no Arashi-chan a guest said something like, “You can always trust, or see how good a person is, if they like animals.” That’s pretty much how I feel about Aiba.

Suzuki Airi:

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned my love of Airi either. This is why I needed to write this post. I’ve always had a pretty strong attachment to Airi because of Buono. I’ve been a fan of Buono since they formed. But the reason that I love Airi is because she’s absolutely adorable and completely charming. Airi is just so entertaining to watch she’s fun and dorky, but more importantly she’s hilarious. She constantly makes me laugh with her puns. Everyone used to think it was both Airi in Yuuka who were like the pun queens, but to be honest there was never really any competition for me. There’s just a quality about Airi that makes me want to run up to her and hug her.

Tanaka Koki:

When I first became aware that KAT-TUN existed I did not get the appeal of Koki. I didn’t think his whole image and rapping fit in with KAT-TUN’s sorta rockish sound. And I didn’t really think he was that easy on the eyes. But that all changed when I watched Cartoon KAT-TUN. I saw Koki’s true personality and I loved it. He was funny and charming. I noticed him the most during Cartoon KAT-TUN. And he was always pretty blunt, and always said exactly what was on his mind, but more in a joking way than a mean way. I do think Koki is pretty cute now. But that’s due to good hair mixed with liking his personality so much it formed a physical attraction. Am I the only one who does that?

Suzuki Kanon:

My beloved Zukki, what can I really say about her? She’s an idol I was drawn to immediately. After her bright smile and comedy sketch at the auditions I wanted her to join so badly. And of course she did. Zukki hasn’t really bored me yet. With her signature bug imitations and her funny personality I’m completely captivated by Zukki. I love that everything she does is done with her bright smile. She’s just so adorable and still seems so innocent. I mean, she still carries around her stuffed bear Cha-chan. She’s just fun personified.

Nishikido Ryo:

I’ve already said in detail how I feel about Ryo-chan in my 30 day idol challenge day 1 post. So, I’ll just very briefly again go over why I like him. I like Ryo for his slightly aggressive, “I’m so cool” persona. I think he’s hilarious and I love all his signature poison tongue jabs. I also like that he also shows his insecure and embarrassed side from time to time as well. I just find everything about Ryo appealing.

Nakanishi Kana:

Kana was one of those girls that I did not want to join the group, but once she did join it all made sense. The reason I love Kana is because she’s another funny girl like Zukki. With her gorilla loving attitude. To me she also seems to be a little KY. She seems to goof off whenever even if it’s not the right time for it, or other people are annoyed be it. She just seems to be so loud and fun. And I like that she tries to make her charm point that she’s the only H!P member from Osaka, but I honestly haven’t seen her mention that much since a little after she joined.

Momota Kanako:

Now, I do admit that I don’t know all that much about Kanako since the lack of Momoclo subs. But the little I do know about her I love. My favorite used to be Momoka, I do still like her but after watching some clips I was more drawn to Kanako. Kanako seems to be so happy-go-lucky and bursting with energy, which I love. I also love her signature high jumps. And her overall gymnastic skills are pretty impressive. I don’t really get why Reni is the electrifying one, I can totally see that suiting Kanako more.

Tamamori Yuta:

Tama is another member that I don’t know everything about. Mostly because I just became a fan when they debuted in 2011. And I’m honestly still on the fence about them, some of their songs are great, but some are awful. What I like about Tama is no matter what he’s doing he seems to overreact more than he needs to. Whether that’s just the way he is or not, it’s still pretty hilarious. He’s just got this sort of endearing charm about him. Where he just seems so sweet and sorta naive, and dorky, and weird that you just want to hug him. That’s exactly how Kamei Eri was, and is probably the main reason I like him so much. He also seems to be a little wimpy which I find appealing. Yeah, I said it, don’t judge me.

Mori Shiori:

Passpo is one of those groups that I love, but has nothing, besides a few songs, translated into English. It is so hard to try to like an idol you know nothing about. So, everything I like about Shiori is based on the impression I get from her. Of course what drew me to Shiori instantly was her bright smile. But what I like about Shiori is that she just exudes happiness and energy. Whenever I see her in PVs or concerts she’s just like a bouncing ball of positive energy.

Masuda Takahisa:

When Ryo left NEWS I had to find a new favorite member, and I was sure if would be KoyaShige. But pretty unexpectedly I realized I was paying more attention to Massu, but at the same time it made sense. When Ryo was a member I didn’t really pay attention to Massu because their personalities were on such opposite sides of the spectrum that Massu always seemed kinda immature in compassion. But Massu’s fun loving spirit and childish nature is what I love about idols. Which is why slowly over the years I did start to pay more attention to Massu. Massu really is adorable, and cuteness has been his main image for years. Well, that and being gluttonous. He’s almost like Ogawa Saki in male form.

Tokunaga Chinami:

I’ve said on my blog before that the reason I love Chinami so much is because she reminds me a lot of myself. (Well if you took Chinami’s energetic side, Zukki’s funny side, Airi’s bad puns, and Sayu’s bluntness you’d get pretty close to my personality.) I love Chinami because of how energetic, upbeat, and generally happy she is. It’s just such an infectious and lovable quality. Chinami is also a girl after my own heart as she loves to sleep as much as I do.

Nakajima Yuto:

Yuto has been my favorite Hey! Say! JUMP member since I became a fan. There’s just something I’ve always liked about Yuto. What really draws me to Yuto is how energetic Yuto is. He’s always bursting with energy and acting over the top. Ryosuke even said that backstage out of nowhere he’ll be yelling even if he’s by himself. Yuto also just seems so easy going and carefree. Which is what I really like about him. Yuto is also very dorky and quirky. And he’s never never cared about basically make a fool of himself. He just seems so innocent and genuine to me. He’s also an all around nice guy and is good friends with most of JUMP.

Fukuda Kanon:

You know I couldn’t forget my beloved Kanyon. I have been a fan of her since I first layed eyes on her in Shugo Chara Egg. I’ve gotten this cute little sister vibe from her. And I actually do like Kanon’s personality. Shockingly I have nothing against playing the whole “I’m the cutest ever” idol persona. It’s just to me Sayu’s seems less of an act and more real at times, and she’s said a few things that as a fellow female I was pretty annoyed by. I do like that when Kanon gets into her whole Cinderella/cute idol character her whole demeanor changes. She gets a lot more dramatic, and she even changes the way she speaks. Which is pretty funny. Which in a way is poking fun at her whole character completely. Or at least that’s how I take it.

Okamoto Keito:

Back when I first got into HSJ I did not see the appeal of Keito at all. He was the guy that was just there, and I always thought he was a little weird looking. But over the years I started to see Keito’s appeal. And pretty much the entire reason I love Keito is because he’s the most awkward idol ever. He seriously is, a lot of times he just sits there and doesn’t say anything. It seems like he’s never sure exactly what he’s supposed to be doing. Most of the time they just use him to be the guy that says things in English. He’s so socially awkward that he once said he’s not comfortable talking when there’s a large group of people around. He’s also fallen down while filming things like 3 times before. His awkwardness just makes him adorable and endearing.

And there you have it my favorite idols. I do want to point out these aren’t all of the idols that I love. I obviously love WAY more idols than this. I just didn’t include my favorite graduated idols or my number 2 idols because I didn’t want this post to be a mile long. I tried to rank just my number 1 idols from each group. Some groups like, S/mileage and Hey! Say! JUMP, have 2 idols, and that’s because those idols are tied for first place. I absolutely could not pick just one for those groups. All of the other groups have a clear number 1. If people honestly care about my my favorite graduated idols or my number 2 idols, I am make another one of these ranking posts sometime in the future.

Best Album Songs of 2012

Going right along with my ranking extravaganza is the final installment: Best Album Songs of 2012.

This was yet another extremely difficult think to rank. Not quite as hard as ranking singles, but definitely a close second. I think there were a lot of great albums released this year. Like really great albums.I would even label 4 or 5 of them as perfect albums.
Yet again all my favorite idol groups released an album. I shouldn’t say yet again as most idol groups release an album a year. But whatever.

Oh also, I really wanted to include the solos from NEWS’ best album. But I didn’t because even though that album was released this year the songs are years old. You know if I could have included them Shige’s Shalala Tambourine would have been really close to the top of the list.

Well, I won’t prelong this anymore. Here we go!

10. Mano Erina – Glory Days

I think every H!P fan was in love with this song when they randomly uploaded it to ManoEri’s youtube page. I know I was, I literally could not get enough of this song since then. I was super impressed by this entire album. It really was ManoEri’s best album. Lately her music was just flawless. Which really adds salt to her still fresh graduation wounds. I literally do not want her to leave now. It’s funny how just 2 or 3 years ago, I would have laughed at her leaving. This song is really incredible. The music is very intense and the slight effects they do on her voice fit it perfectly and add a nice element to the song. ManoEri sounds just perfect in this song. It doesn’t sound like she’s forcing her voice out.

9. KAT-TUN – One Day

In the past I never really gave KAT-TUN’s albums much of a chance because I personally thought they were terrible. But they’ve really picked it up over the past few years. And anymore I go out of my way to listen to their albums. And this album was just incredible, in my opinion it’s their best album to date. I of course love the dance feel of the music, but it has this interesting sound where it’s like a mix between dance and rock music. My absolute favorite part of the song is the chorus, it’s just so powerful and catchy.

8. C-ute – Kagayake! Houkago

If you would have told me last year that a Nacky solo would make it onto my list I wouldn’t believe you. Mostly because I don’t really care for her voice so much, she has one of the weaker voices in C-ute. But I’ve been absolutely in love with this song since I first heard it. And seeing her perform it when they live streamed C-ute’s concert, just really confirmed my love for it. It’s just such a happy and fun song. And one of those songs that are so upbeat that really forget about everything for a minute and are completely lost in the song.

7. Hey! Say! JUMP – Thumb & Pinky

This song came so close to be beaten out by Hurry Up. I’ve been addicted to, and have been listening to, Hurry Up practically nonstop for months. But I’ve been doing the same with this song. But when it came to the best song on the album it became obvious that I had to pick this one. It’s another song that was written by Hikaru, and you can immediately tell because it’s arranged extremely similarly to Ai Scream. But that’s what I love about this song. All of the background calls and sound effects are a big part of what makes this song so fun and catchy. I especially love Daiki’s random yell. Of course I also love the energetic music and the fast paced way that the song is. I also appreciate how this is one of the only songs on the album where you actually hear everyone sing.

6. SUPER GiRLS – Zettai Jibun Zenshin Sengen

This is a song I love because it’s the same idol fare that I absolutely adore. It’s sung cutely and the music is fun and energetic. What more can you really ask for from idol music? Not only is that song amazing, but the album as a whole was. It was really difficult to pick just one song. But ultimately this song one because of it’s infectious chorus.

5. Yamashita Tomohisa – Shiver

I have to say that I am extremely late in listening to Yamapi’s album. Since I’m not a gigantic fan of his I only heard his Ero album because I watched the concert DVD. And I’m starting to think that that’s a mistake, because this album was spectacular. 100 times better than I was expecting. One of the reasons I love this song is the gritty rock feel the music and the way its sung has. The music also reminds me Puffy AmiYumi music mixed with just great rock music in general. But of course the most obvious reason for loving this song is that it’s sung completely in English. And I am actually really impressed with Yamapi’s English. I can understand it 100%, and that really is saying something. Because despite being in America for months Jin’s English is still hard to understand. Remind me again why Jin is trying to break into the US and not Yamapi? Because this seriously blows any of Jin’s English song way out of the water. Besides it being English the song is extremely catchy in its own right. I immediately rewatched this performances about 4 or 5 times.

4. Morning Musume – Dokka~n Capriccio

What immediately drew me to this song is that is has the same spirit and sounds as their 12th album. This song is very similar to Ok Yeah. And that’s exactly what I love about it. It’s got that wonderful and really powerful dance music. The song is so intense and catchy that’s it’s impossible to not like it. The song leaves and incredibly deep impression and it really demands attention. Especially when the music booms after they say dokkan. I really love this song. It’s one of those songs that I could listen to for hours without getting bored.

3. AKB48 – Iede no Yoru

What I love about this song is that it sounds very powerful while still having that unique AKB48 sound. The song as a whole is very passionate and very inspiring actually. And it has a real roughness to it that you don’t immediately expect from AKB48. Well, from their singles anyway.I really love that the song is about leaving home even though they have no where to go, just to be free. I’m just really drawn to those lyrics. They’re amazing in my opinion.

2. Passpo – Dear My Friends

This is just a perfect song in my opinion. Passpo is one of those idol groups that very rarely disappoint. And when you listen to the One World album you’ll hear just how strong of a group they are. It was so hard to narrow it down to just one song. But I ultimately picked it because of how at the same time it was both intense but still fun. Which isn’t really an easy thing to do, but Passpo pulls it off with such seamless ease. This song is just so powerful that it’s beautiful. It really is just a beautiful song. And my girl Shiori sounds absolutely incredible in this song. It just seems so effortless and natural. When I listen to Passpo’s songs, especially their album songs, I’m just reminded of how much of a travesty it is that they sell so low.

1. Arashi – Welcome to Our Party

This song, OMG this song! You cannot imagine how hard it is to put into words how much I love this song. I love absolutely everything about this song. It is absolutely perfect in every single way. No, seriously it is. Can I just start by saying Popcorn was an absolutely amazing album. It was one of their best albums to date. It just has that fun-loving old school Arashi feel. This song is everything great about Arashi rolled into one. What I really love about this song is it has a very Attack It feel. In the sense that all the members are rapping just like in Attack It. And I’m not sure if my readers know this, but Attack It is one of my absolute favorite Arashi songs. What else is great about this song is how energetic and fun this song is. I mean, this song literally grabs you by your shoulders, shakes you, and demands that you party. I implore anyone who is not an Arashi fan to listen to this song, you will not regret it. This song is just so addicting and catchy from basically the first note.

Worst Singles of 2012

Continuing with my yearly ranking extravaganza we’ll find out the same thing we find out most years, Aim doesn’t like slow songs. But on a more serious note, this was literally the hardest year to pick a top ten worst single list. Most years I have a somewhat clear idea of what singles I didn’t enjoy that much and I only have to scramble to pick the last song or two. But this year it was completely different. I only had about 3 songs this year that I knew for a fact I just didn’t care for that much. And this year I was frantically trying to think of about 7 songs to pick.

I know I say this every year that I don’t really hate any idol song, and the worst of the year list aren’t songs I hate just my least favorite songs. Well, that sentence has never been more true. This year I had to pick songs that were in the middle for me because barely any songs this year dipped lower than a 5/10 for me this year. In my opinion, this was a really spectacular year for idol music. Or maybe I was incredibly lucky and it was just a great year for the type of idol music I like. Either way, this year in music was just great, which made things a hundred times more difficult for me. If you ever get personally offended with my lists for worst songs because your favorite song is on the list, well this year you’re in luck because I don’t consider most of these songs to be deserving of the worst label. So you don’t have to say I have horrible taste in music. Well, you don’t have to think that anyway. I say think because no one has ever literally commented on my year ranking posts and said that. But I’m sure at least some of you may have been thinking it.
10. Momoiro Clover Z – Saraba, Itoshiki Kanashimi-tachi yo

This song is number 10 because I’m walking a thin line between liking this song and not liking it at all. The song itself isn’t completely awful. In fact if it was done by any other group I probably would have liked it more. But when it comes to MomoClo I expect over the top energetic and cutesy music from them. This song just feels too mature for them. Or rather it’s just not the music I personally prefer to hear from them. It’s the same reason why I never really liked Roudou Sanka. The chorus is still a little catchy and there are some cool effects done tot heir voices, but the song just isn’t for me.

9. Berryz Koubou – Be Genki Naseba Naru!

This is one of those songs I just did not like at all when I first heard it. I just thought all the nai nais were pretty annoying. And I think the bridge sounds completely awkward. The way that it slows down and turns into this weird fanciful music just sounds really out of place. The one thing I always did like about the song was the chorus.I think the chorus is fun and catchy. It’s really about the only redeeming quality of this song. Because honestly this song sounds more like 3 different songs pieced together than one complete song. And I think the lyrics are quite stupid. The entire song just lists things that you shouldn’t do or shouldn’t let happen. Like sleeping during examsor leaving your wallet in the taxi. I think those are all pretty obvious things and don’t really need a song written about them.

8. Mano Erina – Tasogare Kousaten

I’ve said it once I’ll say it again, I am not a fan of slow paced songs or ballads. I don’t know, I just need a fast paced song to hold my interest. And that’s of course what I don’t really like about this song. I’m sure it’s pretty in its own way, but I just find it boring. Which is a problem I’ve had with ManoEri since the beginning. How ironic that her music finally starts to get good an she’s graduating. For me to like a slower song the lyrics have to be really beautiful and meaningful, and I feel like this song also misses the mark. While this song does have some meaning, something about painting their future in the blue sky and always shining by the same light. But I’ve heard tons of songs like that before. It’s just not enough for me.

7. Kis-My-Ft2 – She! Her! Her!

I was never this song’s biggest fan when it first came out, and that has changed much over this past year. Especially since the other songs they released this year were a lot better than this one. There are a few reasons why I don’t like this song, the first being how annoying the random she her her chants are. First of all, they don’t match the flow of the rest of the song. And second of all, she her her doesn’t have an actual meaning. I also think that the amount of English in this song makes it sound pretty awkward. The song itself is mediocore at best and barely good enough to be an A-side.

6. AKB48 – Give Me Five

When this song first came out there was a bit of commotion about it because they were playing instruments. At least I think they were actually playing them during the lives. Whatever the case may be, I just do not like this song. I think it’s boring and it didn’t take any risks at all. It feels like one of those songs that AKB48 makes that they don’t even try with because they know whatever they produce will sell well just because of who they are. Also, it is yet another graduation song. I get that there have been a lot of Japanese graduation songs out there, (personally I think ZONE’s Sotsugyou and Buono’s Last Forever are some of my favorites.) and idols in general make a lot of gradution songs, but this is literally like the 6th graduation themed single AKB48 has released in their career. It’s boring, it’s just absolutely boring. I really don’t need to hear yet another graduation single from them. Please stick with the cheesy idol songs I love.

5. Arashi – Your Eyes

Slow idol songs bore me to no end, but no slow idol songs bore me quite like Arashi’s slow songs do. And the reason for that is anymore all of their slow songs from 2010-present day sound exactly the same and have nearly the same lyrical content. Where are Arashi’s slow songs that lyrically made up for it being so slow paced?Your Eyes is definitely no Beautiful Days were the lyrics are so heartfelt and beautiful that you could tear up listening to it. The absolute only thing this song has going for it is how the chorus sounds. The chorus is actually really great. It has like this rock sound to it and it’s completely catchy. However, once the song switches over from the chorus to the verse it loses all its appeal. The verse is sung so monotonically and the music is so simple and soft, that it literally sounds like they are speaking over light music rather than singing a song.

4. Passpo – Kimi wa Boku wo Suki ni Naru

I was completely underwhelmed by this song the very moment it came out. And unlike most of the other songs on this list, I haven’t really grown to like it. I think this is not only Passpo’s weakest singles to date, but one of their weakest songs overall. I mean, their entire indie album is better than this song. The entire song just sounds so stale. It’s way too toned down for Passpo. I expect either happy upbeat pop-rock or intense serious rock from them. Either way I expect a song that leaves a deep impression. And this song, sadly, just isn’t it. It’s not a terrible song, I feel like there could be occasions where you’re in the mood to hear this song. But for me those time are few and far. To me the song is boring and doesn’t push things far enough. They played it way too safe with this single.

3. Watanabe Mayu – Otona Jelly Beans

This song had all the elements for a great song going for it. Mayu’s adorable voice and very cutesy and fanciful music. However, there’s just something about the song that I just don’t like. To me the song is just boring and doesn’t leave a deep impression at all. I also find the lyrics to be mediocore at best. It’s about wanting a kiss on the first date and for some reason eating jelly beans. It’s also supposed to be about having an adult birthday. So, I guess the jelly beans are supposed to represent that she’s still innocent even though she wants to be an adult. That’s what I got from it at least. Regardless, there’s just something about this song I don’t really care for.

2. NMB48 – Junjou U-19

When this song came out I was so impressed with it. I thought the song had a great instrumental and it was extremely catchy. I even loved how elaborate, interesting, and fun the PV was. So, naturally once I saw someone had subbed the PV I was really excited to find out what the song was about. And once I finally understood the lyrics of the song I was completely turned off. The entire theme of the song is a girl wanting to wait until she’s 19 to lose her virginity. And that she doesn’t want to become an adult too quickly so let her stay pure a little longer. The entire song is catering to the fanbase that gets off on their idols being virginal and untouched. While that itself doesn’t really bother me because every idol group has this type of fanbase. Even male idol fans have something vaguely similar to this. Male idol fans seem to be delusional and convince themselves that idols in their mid-20’s, or ones pushing 30, are still virgins despite being photographed with girlfriends. Another slice of male idol fans have even been brazen enough to start petitions for their idols to break up with their girlfriends. (I’ve actually only seen this happen once, but once was enough to be honest.) I accept that both of these fanbases exist and are a huge chunk of who buys their music and merch, and therefore keep my favorite idols going. But I’m also not here for either of those fanbases, so this particular song is lost on me. I still do listen to this song occasionally because it is still a catchy song. It’s just not, and never will be, one of my favorites.

1. NYC – Wonderful Cupid

This song, this song! Listen to this song once and you’ll clearly see why it’s the perfect choice for number one. I have a real indifference to NYC, so it’s natural for me to have bad things to say about their songs initially. With most of NYC’s singles I usually hate them at first, but slowly realize that they’re actually great songs. Especially with Haina. When Haina came out I literally though, “This is terrible. What garbage are they trying to push on me now?” But after hearing it about 15-20 times I actually really love the song. Funny how that happens, right? But with Wonderful Cupid there is absolutely nothing to love. The song is so slow and boring that it sounds like a lullaby. No wonder it put me to sleep. It seems like the whole reason that NYC continued in the first place was to release singles so Hey! Say! JUMP could mature as a group. Since Hey! Say! JUMP used to be both the newest group and the group with the youngest members some of their songs for a while seemed to cater to not only Johnny’s usual niche market of teenage girls but the children market as well. Which is why to this day you see children at their concerts. I mean, at the end of Hey! Say! JUMP’s JUMP World concert DVD they thanked all the parents in the child-parent seats.
It’s obvious that Wonderful Cupid is marketed for children, which is a main factor of why I dislike the song so much. It’s too immature for me. I frequently listen to idol songs from girls who are or were 15 years old or younger in the song. But the difference there is even though they were children at the time the songs aren’t children’s songs. C-ute’s Massara Blue Jeans is more mature than this song!

Best Singles of 2012

I’m kicking things off in my annual best and worst ranking extravaganza, with my personal favorite ranking: Top Ten Best Singles of 2012.

2012 has been quite an eventful year in my personal life with tons of ups and downs, and some outright devastation. It really was a year that I won’t soon forget. And like most years it feels like it was over in a blink of the eye. I could have sworn that just yesterday it was only March or June. With this year coming to a close we can also finally say that we’ve successfully survived our 3rd apocalypse. Well, 3 in my lifetime anyway. I don’t know how many you dear readers have been alive for. And personally I get to stop hearing my dad saying it’ll all be over on December 21st. Literally for the entire year whenever something didn’t go his way or anyone in my family complained about anything he would legit say,”What does it matter anyway? You only have to the 21st.” But I digress.

2012 also marked yet another exciting roller coaster ride that is being an idol fan. One filled with more joy and heartbreak than you could really count or really measure. Personally for me the highs were: 1. the addition of Morning Musume’s 10th and 11th gen. 2. The first NEWS singles after Yamapi and Ryo left signaling that there was no stopping them. 3. My favorite Johnny’s Junior Kyomoto Taiga’s drama debut. And that the drama gave them an excuse for him to spam Shounen Club even more than usual. 3. Morning Musume selling 100,000 singles for the first time in like 8 years or more. (Obviously not counting commemorative 40th and 50th singles.) 4. MomoClo performing at Kohaku for the first time. I’m so proud of my girls. It just shows how their popularity keeps increasing.

And my personal lows were: 1. My beloved Mitsui Aika graduating from Morning Musume. 2. The cancellation of Himitsu no Arashi-chan. While I do agree the Arashi Sharehouse segment was boring, I don’t think they needed to lose the whole show. Especially since that means no more manequin 5. 3. Hello!ProTime ending. I still don’t get the point of this one. I’ve said it a hundred times now, but that was H!P’s most interesting show in years.

2012 was also a year filled with great idol music. I don’t know if it was the best year in terms of music in idol history since I’ve only been a serious idol fan since 2007. But at the very least I personally think the music released this year was better than the music released last year. And that is so exciting. It’s like further confirming why being an idol fan is worth every second of ups and downs.

So, without further ado let’s just get to the ranking already. Which by the way, was incredibly easy to pick this year. With so many great songs released this year it was very obvious which singles were the very best.

10. NMB48 – Kitagawa Kenji

This is a song that was hard to pick. Not only was it hard to pick because it’s the last song I could add to my ranking, but it was pretty difficult to pick between this song and Nagiichi. But in the end I picked this based on lyrics. While Nagiichi is catchy I wouldn’t say a song about the cutest girl on the beach is one of my favorites this year. However, the lyrics to KItagawa Kenji are completely adorable. While I don’t think I’ll ever personally be in a situation where I’m fighting a guy for a girl’s heart, especially since this song is most likely sung from a guy’s point of view, I do think the lyrics are cute. It’s so sweet that the person in this song is jealous and won’t lose to their current significant other’s past lover. But my absolute favorite part is the last line that says thanks to Kitagawa Kenji you became this beautiful. That is such a sweet, if not a little cheesy, and beautiful line. Of course the extremely catchy chorus also adds for my love of the song. I don’t know for some reason I just love singing along to the look at part.

9. Not Yet – Sukina Baby

Have you noticed a theme with this ranking already? What can I say, pretty much every idol song I like sounds exactly the same. Happy, upbeat, energetic, and super positive. If it didn’t sound like that idol groups would be no different from any other music out there. And of course that’s what’s great about this song. It’s sugary sweet sound with cutesy lyrics is absolutely addicting. This song would probably be higher on the list if the girls didn’t force their voices to sound cute at times. I really love the lyrics though. I think the whole story line of holding a candle for a childhood friend is incredibly cute and endearing. It’s also a little bit bittersweet.

8. KAT-TUN – To The Limit

This is Johnny’s song I love this year because they returned to their old sound. In KAT-TUN’s case they returned to not only their older sound but their original sound. Once Jin left the group KAT-TUN’s music continued to get heavier and they seemed to experament with different genres. To be honest their music without Jin is about 50 times better than the music with Jin. Their songs this year were so good it was hard to pick between this and Fumetsu no Scrum. But in the end this won because of how heavy it is and how gruffly it’s sung. I also appreciate the amount of Koki in this song. But as I’ve said before this song is just phenomonal. The chorus is sung so intensely and with so much power, it’s just really great. The lyrics are also just as intense

7. SUPER GiRLS – Puri Puri Summer Kiss

This is a song that I unfortunately have’t been unable to find the translation to. But that doesn’t really stop me from loving every minute of this song. Oh SUPER GiRLS borrowing the most popular elements of the most well known idol groups out their to form a pretty solid group on their own. This time it was a summer song for a shameless bikini PV. While idol groups release these songs & videos in the hopes of selling more singles, I do enjoy every minute of these songs. The songs are almost always exclusively about summer love and because of that the songs are always extremely fun and happy, this song included. As soon as the song starts it already sounds like an explosion of energy and cutesy idol music. The lyrics are kind of simple so that even with my poor Japanese skills I can translate roughly about 1/2 of the song. They seem to just be saying what they’re doing at the beach. Regardless of whatever they are actually saying the song is fun and adorable.

6. Arashi – Wild At Heart

I was absolutely in love with this song from the first moment I heard it. I just love the overall sound of this song. It has that same sillyness and energy as songs they released in past. It has a real Kitto Daijoubu mixed with Happiness feel. It’s a welcomed change from the somewhat serious songs they’ve been releasing for the past few years. The lyrics themselves are cheerful and somewhat uplifting. It’s a song about not being afraid of living in the moment. To just throw away trouble and worries and just roll with the punches. They’re not so inspiring that you’ll burst into tears, but they’re cute and I can see listening to this song when you need some encouragement. Personally, I’ve pretty much always taken this carefree approach to life. So, the song really resonates with me.

5. Momoiro Clover Z – Moretsu Uchu Kokyokyoku Dai 7 Gakusho ‘Mugen no Ai’

MomoClo is one of those groups I love for how energetic they are. Now, this song doesn’t have the same energetic flare as their past songs, but I love it because of the heavy rock music. It still makes me laugh that the dude from Megadeth did the guitar work. The song also still retains that same personality and charm that is MomoClo. But I mostly love this song because I’m a pretty big space nerd (and alien nerd. XD) so I love all the space and star references in the song and PV. It also helps that the song is incredibly catchy. I also love the choir in the background doing the harmonies. It gives the song a very elaborate and dramatic feel.

4. Passpo – Wing

I actually haven’t been able to find a translation of this song, so my love for this song is only based on the overall sound alone. I really love how this year Passpo’s singles have had a more hard rock feel to them. Passpo’s past songs have had more of a pop-rock sound. But this year it actually sounds like I’m listening to a Jrock band instead of an idol group. And since I’m a big Jrock fan that’s just perfect to me. And this song is the song they’ve released his year that has the most distinct Jrock sound. I mean, this song is having like an Alice Nine moment. It’s absolutely fantastic. And my god Ai and Shiori sound incredible in this song. It’s like this song was made perfectly for just their voices.

3. Kanjani8 – Aopanna

I really need to get over my love-hate relationship with Kanjani8, because their music is actually really great. But since I’m such a casual fan of them I tend to overlook their music until months after it’s released. And I do admit since Ai Deshita was a little boring I didn’t really bother with them this year. And that was obviously a mistake because this song is amazing. It’s got that upbeat music I love sprinkled with a little bit of weirdness that I’ve come to expect from Kanjani8. What immediately draws me to this song is the ska beat. Ska is a genre that I wasn’t really familiar with a few years ago, but ska music is really upbeat and fun. It almost sounds like tropical music. But what makes me really love the song is the lyrics. Despite the chorus being about snot it’s oddly uplifting. It’s about treasuring the past and to never stop trying to achieve your old dreams, while continuing to have that innocent spirit of your youth. It’s actually really pretty and sentimental.

2. Morning Musume – One-Two-Three

From the moment that they first performed this song at Girls Award 2012, I’ve been absolutely addicted to it. Since their 10th album had some great electronic songs, and even before that because I still don’t understand why SONGS wasn’t a single, I’ve been wishing for them to release an electronic song as a single. While their electronic effects may have been a little heavy handed this year I still think One-Two-Three is an amazing song. The instrumental stands alone as an incredible dance track. That mixed with just the right amount of auto-tuning makes for an incredibly fun and catchy song. The lyrics themselves are another reason why I love the song. I think they are adorable. I like that it’s about a girl not wanting fancy gifts just having love is enough. It’s sappy and overly sweet, just up my ally.

1. SKE48 – Aishiteraburu

This is actually the second year in a row that SKE48 has come in first place. Despite being lazy and hardly ever getting around to reviewing their PVs, I actually really love SKE48’s music. As I’ve mentioned before on my blog, for the last few years in my opinion SKE48’s music has been better than AKB48’s. I love this song because of how positive the song is. The second the song starts it’s already overflowing with energy. The infectious upbeat music makes it impossible to not crack a smile while listening to. It’s songs like this that make me continue to listen to idol music. It’s carefree happy music like this that is pretty much unique to idol music. The lyrics might be a little cheesy being about summer love, which is probably one of the most cliched story lines in pop music history. But at least for me the happy and uplifting lyrics add to the charm of the song.

And as always here are my Honorable Mentions:

1. Berryz Koubou – Cha Cha Sing
2. NEWS – Chankapana
3. AKB48 – Gingham Check
4. DIY – Forest For Rest
5. YuiKaori – Wake Up
6. Arashi – Face Down
7. S/mileage – Chotto Matte Kudasai
8. Buono – Hatsukoi Cider
9. Hey! Say! JUMP – Super Delicate
10. Kis-My-Ft2 – Wanna Beeee
11. Kis-My-Ft2 – Shake It Up
12. Berryz Koubou and C-ute – Cho Happy Song
13. Mano Erina – Song For The Date

Kikkawa Yuu-Koko Kara Hajimarunda preview

Last month the full radio rip for Kikka’s 4th single, Koko Kara Hajimarunda was released.

I do apologize dear readers for how old this is and for how long it took me to make this post. But luckily since the single isn’t coming out until July there hasn’t been a PV preview yet and I still have time to write about the radio rip.

The more music I hear by Kikka the more upset I get that H!P let her just float around in the Eggs for so long. Absolutely everything about Kikka is just perfect and flawless. With each release I fall more and more in love with her and her music. And this song does not disappoint at all.

Since debuting Kikka has been releasing a lot of upbeat dance music. And this song seems to be following that pattern. This song has this computerized and electronic sound which I absolutely love. They also managed to do this without adding too much effects to her voice. I think the little bit they added was just the right amount and worked perfectly. Overall the whole sound of the song is just amazing. It’s fun, it’s catchy, and it’s upbeat. And it’s sung with the same seamlessness as all of Kikka’s songs.

Fairies-Tweet Dream preview

A few days ago the radio preview for Fairies song Tweet Dream, off their upcoming doublr A-side 4th single, has been released.

I can honestly say that I wasn’t expecting the song to sound the way it does at all. I’ve grown accustomed to Fairies mature sound. It’s actually what drew me to them in the first place. That they were so different than other idol groups. Tweet Dream is actually too cute of  a song and the complete opposite of what I expect from them. I do realize that this isn’t their first time releasing this type of song. But Sweet Jewel was a better song and had a charm to it. Granted that charm came from the fact that is sounds a lot like Diamonds by Princess Princess.

I’m just really disappointed by this song. It’s lacking the power and emotion of their other songs. It doesn’t pack a punch at all. Most of their other songs draw me in with a catchy chorus or interesting music. They are going for this cutesy electronic sound that just does not work for them. Ironically, if practically any other group made this song I might enjoy it more. Though I’m not 100% sure about that. As I’ve said before I hate songs that don’t pick up in the chorus and stay the same level the entire song. Which is exactly what this song is doing. The music also isn’t bold enough. I love all the cute background effects because they remind me of Internet Cupid by Buono. I just wish they were used more.

SUPER GiRLS send a big summer kiss

Ok everyone I am officially back to blogging. I am 100% out of my funk. I think I was officially out of my blogging funk while I was reading some idol related news and felt a little sad and thought to myself, “Oh, look at all the stuff I could be blogging about.” While I was in my funk I was just like, “Oh that’s cool, but lolz I’ll just wait for another day to post it.” So, I’m out of my funk and into this sort of semi blogging depression where I’m sad that I haven’t been blogging. And this is why I’m addicting to blogging and will probably never stop blogging.
I’m also going to take another approach to catching up. Usually when I am behind in blogging, I go in reverse order to catch up on everything I’ve missed. Mostly because I feel obligated to my readers to blog about the things I’ve missed. But quite frankly that approach makes blogging a little stale, and is the reason why I’ve yet to catch up with what I’m behind in. No, this time I’m just going to continue blogging like I’m not behind and then do PV reviews I’m behind in when it tickles my fancy. If it tickles my fancy. There’s 50/50 chance I’ll say screw it and not do them at all. It depends on how lazy I am. But if there’s a PV you really want me review, that I haven’t done yet, just request it on this post and I’ll put it to the top of my list. Just make sure it’s not YuiKaori’s Kimi no Yell, cause that is at the top of my list already.

Starting off with new PVs is SUPER GiRLS’ Puri Puri Summer Kiss. Now, I absolutely adore SUPER GiRLS so it was an obvious choice. Well, not so obvious in the beginning. It was toss up between SUPER GiRLS and Passpo, but since SUPER GiRLS PV looked more fun it was obvious.

One again SUPER GiRLS manage to do everything right with this PV. It’s a standard idol bikini PV which I’ve said several times I’m not a fan of. The fanservice is wasted on me as a female fan. For a bikini PV to impress me there has to be a lot of other elements than “look how sexy I look in this bikini.” Which is the failure of AKB48 bikini PVs. They do have other elements but the non-bikini elements are pretty lame or too short. And in the beginning of SUPER GiRLS’ PV they almost lost me.

Nearly the first half of the PV is nothing more than bikini fanservice. Which is fine, but again not my cup of tea. As the PV went on I was actually pleasantly surprised that there was something else going on in the PV. I’m glad they went down the Max Otomegokoro route. But their Max Otomegokoro PV was more of a games/summer festival PV, with Puri Puri Summer Kiss it’s a complete beach PV. And I absolutely love it. They added a lot of fun summer elements like hitting a watermelon, having a shaved ice eating contest, and playing in the ocean. There are just a lot of fun and silly elements to the PV. Like Reira falling off the ladder,  Hikaru being buried in the sand, and catching Rino eating watermelon out of the fridge.

I really enjoyed watching this PV. I think it’s a really fun summer themed PV. It’s not meant to be anything more. No flashy outfits or expensive sets. Which is fine, sometimes simple PVs are the best. My favorite scenes are when the girls are walking down the table runway.  I think they’re really cute. And of course I also love their unison close-up shots. I’ve come expect them from SUPER GiRLS. This PV really shows the girls acting silly and cute. Which is how I prefer my idol summer PV cute and fun, rather than sexy. Which is how I’ve prefer my idols to be all the time. Which I’ve said, I think, 500 times now.

But if you prefer bikini PVs for fanservice don’t fret they’re still catering to you. Besides the fact that the entire time they’re bikins in the PV, there are still other fanservice elements. But not really as much as you’d excpet. You can decide for yourself if that’s a possitive or a negative. The main fanservice they feature in this PV besides bikinis is the part of the dance where they shake their butts. And there’s like 5 different shots of it. During the dance, random close-up shots, and random close-up shots and the girls smaking them. Which at times is out of place because sometimes the scenes are just randomly thrown in there. The only other fanservice element to this PV is the girls kissing the camera. Which reminds me too much of AKBIdoling’s Chu Shiyou Ze PV. Yes, whenever any idol releases a PV where they kiss the camera I am forever going to compare it to AKBIdoling. They most likely weren’t the first to do it, but I compare them to it because the PV focused so much on it. Obviously SUPER GiRLS are kissing to keep with the title, and most likely, theme of the song which is summer kiss. But it’s still done for fanservice to the fans, who I guess can pretend the girls are kissing them. I don’t know ,I don’t really see the appeal of kissing the camera. Even if it was my male idols doing it, it would still seem stupid and pointless to me.

Am I the only one who thinks the girls only sign screams of lesbian overtones? XD

The PV just started and butt shots already.

I love this diving under dance move, so cute.

It’s cute that Ami and Ruka are in tubes.

This move is stupid. But my god look how gorgeous Reira looks. Is she starting to shed her tomboy image?

Ami is adorable, and I love her bikini.

They seem to be giving a lot of Rina in this PV, which is odd.

I cannot get over how pretty Reira looks.

Adorable Rino. But I’m starting to get annoyed that Mirei gets the same hairstyle in every PV.

Cute.

This is a pretty fun summery scene.

But it just reminds me too much of C-ute’s Shochuu Omimai Moushiagemasu PV.

Fanservice. And gorgeous Reira.

It reminds me too much of AKB48’s Baby Baby Baby PV.

Oh look, more fanservice.

Stupid dance move.

Super cute.

Reira. *O*

Lolz.

Work it Rino.

I don’t know why, but I really love this shot.

Adorable Ami.

Intense kiss close-up.

Will still forever remind me of AKBIdoling’s Chu Shiyou Ze.

What?

Cute move.

Lol.

Saori looks super pretty here.

If you liked  it then you shoulda put a ring on it.

Cute, but where have I seen this before?

Oh that’s right, in the Heavy Rotation PV.

Adorable.

Lol.

Cute.

Rino stole the watermelon from the watermelon jar.

Ruka is just stunning.

Those are actually pretty nice.

Look at Hikaru trying to look sexy.

Ami. *O*

Cute ending pose.

MomoClo’s new PV is out of this world

Roughly a month ago the full PV for Momoiro Clover Z’s recent single, Mouretsu Uchuu Koukyoukyoku Dainana Gakushou “Mugen no Ai”, was released.

There’s not too many new elements to the PV that we didn’t already see in the PV preview. But that does not stop me at all from loving every second of this PV. The PV is visually stunning. Right off the bar you notice how colorful and vibrant the PV is because pretty much the only color in the entire PV are the girls outfits and the other scenes featuring the girl’s image colors. Which really make the girls pop against the grungy and desolate moon set as well as the darkness of space.
But of course the main reason why this PV is so striking is because of just how well the CG is done. Now, I’m no expert on CG and this PV probably cost far less to make then I think it did, but I am honestly really impressed with the CG. It’s easily the best CG I’ve ever seen in an idol PV.  The planets and the asteroids look extremely realistic. The wormholes and random energy coming from their bikes are a little poorly done, but that’s really my only complaint for the entire PV. Well, that and the fact that at one point of the PV they move the asteroid belt between the Earth and the Moon. But I’m probably the only person who cares about that.
This PV isn’t even great because of all the fancy effects. No, you could take all of that away and it would still be a decent PV. And that’s because there’s something going on in ever single scene. Epic guitar solos, random alien eyes, having their braind connected to their ufo, having an E.T. moment of flying past the moon, and Reni being pulled into a tractor beam. It’s the right level of insanity that MomoClo has been putting in their PVs since they made their official debut.

That’s a nice guitar.

Cool effect. But they look more like zombies to me.

Lolz at Kanako’s rock face.

MomoClo phone home.

I love how their spaceship has Christmas lights on it. Still better made than the lunar module.

This scene is just beautiful.

Adorable, and I love Reni’s outfit.

Ayaka is super pretty.

Cutie. And Kanako hands down has the best outfit.

Lol.

Look mom no hands.

So cute.

Look how amazing my my Momoka looks.

It’s cute that they have a z on the back of their bike.

And of course fire for no reason.

This reminds me of the blocks they did in the Maji Desu ka Ska PV.

I don’t get what they are supposed to be here.

Kanako is really owning the close-up shots.

So, it’s like some sort of brain transfer or what?

Cute part of the dance.

Why does Reni keep crossing her arms like that?

Super cute.

Talk about high beams.

Love her.

Adorable.

A trophy?

So, if MomoClo has their own spaceship why is Reni still getting abducted?

Or it was just to hold confetti.

Lolz.

Um…ok then.

So they’re connected to the spaceship that took Reni.

Why are there millions of them? o_O

SUPER GiRLS- 1,000,000 Smile PV preview

Recently the short PV for SUPER GiRLS new single, 1,000,000 Smile, was uploaded to Avex’s official youtube channel.

And SUPER GiRLS once again manages to be everything that I want in a idol group. The 1,000,000 Smile PV is absolutely stunning. The lighting is just beautiful, and the PV as a whole is very light and vibrant. The whole theme of the PV are the members working in some sort of cafe. But with the amount of flowers scattered around the set it looks more like a flower shop. But I can’t really complain because the flowers are gorgeous and give the PV a nice spring feel to it. Most of the shots so far are the girls setting up the cafe. And the look amazing while doing it. Everyone has a very pretty hairstyle. Especially Ami, I’m pretty sure this is the first time she’s ever had her hair down in a PV before. And should looks incredible. As for the outfits I’m half impressed. The cafe outfits are a little boring because they look like every other random cafe outfit out there. But I absolutely adore the dance shot dresses. Does anything scream spring more than a floral pattern and peplum skirt?

Fairies-Beat Generation PV preview

A few days ago Fairies’ official youtube channel uploaded the short version of the PV for their upcoming double A-side single, Beat Generation / No More Distance.

And I gotta say, I am completely underwhelmed and unimpressed by what I’m seeing. Fairies seem to have reverted to the exact same PV format of their first single’s PVs.  Were there’s basically nothing going on the PV but dancing, even close-up shots aren’t as often as they should be. After I saw the PVs for Hero and Sweet Jewel I thought that this meant Fairies’ PVs were finally going to live up to how awesome their songs are. But with Beat Generation I’m getting more of the same. I do apperciate that they tried to make the PV interesting with multiple sets and outfits. And I do like the close-up shot outfits and the giant metal flower they sing in front of in the close-up shots is kind of cool. But I’m actually not impressed with any other element of the PV itself. The old school hip hop looking outfits and the orange and yellow outfits are hideous. And I can’t stand the main outfits they wear,  for the mere fact that I’m sick of them wearing jean shorts all the time! In every single single one of their singles they wear jean shorts in at least one of the PVs. Maybe they’re trying to make it their signature piece but it’s really annoying.

There is one element of this PV that I do like, and that’s the dance. Of course it’s very skillfully done per usual, but that’s not what catches my eye about it. I am completely blow away by how effortlessly they dance in heels. I do realize that they’ve been dancing in heels, but in this dance you’re just drawn to it. There’s so much spinning and fast foot work in this dance that I am just really impressed by it.

It’s really a shame that this PV isn’t really anything to write home about, because this is their best song yet.

Passpo’s new PV fizzles

The full PV for Passpo’s newest single, Kimi wa Boku wo Suki ni Naru, was released over a month ago. And I’m finally bringing you my delayed PV review.

I’d like to think of myself as a pretty big Passpo fan. Their cute and their music is different than what a lot of other idol groups are doing. And it’s reasons like that, that Passo hasn’t really disappointed me yet. But that pretty much all changed when I watched the PV for their recent single Kimi wa Boku wo Suki ni Naru. Both the PV and the song don’t push it far enough. The song has that distinctive sound, and I see what they were trying to do, but it’s just far too slow for my taste and for Passpo’s usual standards. Passpo’s singles are usually guitar heavy rock music overflowing with energy. This song is really lacking the grit that songs like Let it Go and Shoujo Hikou have. While this song does have a clear guitar riff I kept waiting for the singing to get to be a blaring level, where it sounds like they are almost screaming because they have so much energy in their voices. Which most Passpo songs sound like. But that never happens, in fact the song gets slower towards the end of the song. Even Kiss=Suki that starts off slow gets more exciting in the chorus. The song is just really a let down for me, one of my least favorite singles by them, and maybe even song.

Now the PV is equally a let down. Passpo’s best PV to date is ViVi Natsu, so I will forever compare all of their PVs to that one. Just absolutely everything about ViVi Natsu was incredible. It was a fun and cute summer themed PV, with 3 different outfits, filmed in 4 different locations, and filmed in really beautiful natural lighting. Everything the Kimi wa Boku wo Suki ni Naru PV lacks. Well, except for the natural lighting. But 8/10 of the PV is shot indoors. This PV is shot in 3 different locations with 2 different outfits, but still I’m just not into it. I mean the PV isn’t awful. The main dance set is actually really nice and their outfits are gorgeous. But what was so great about their past PV were, no matter how bad the lighting was or how cheap the budget was, the girls always went over the top in the close-ups and PV itself. You could really see the girl’s personalities shining through. And they were fun PVs because of that. But in this PV you don’t get any clear personality and all of their close-up shots are choreographed pieces from the dance. The only time you get to see near genuine emotions on the girl’s faces are when they all find each other and hug. And by the way, they just did the same thing in the Kiss=Suki PV. So, I’m honestly over that. And not only that, what’s with only 6/9 girls being in most of those scenes? Are they trying to prepare us for when the new members come in and steal the old members popularity?

Let’s film the skyline, but then hardly shoot near there.

I really like this set, but that’s mostly because it has a pink hue to it.

Ai looks adorable.

I absolutely love this outfits.

Adorable.

Gorgeous. And Natsumi’s makeup looks amazing per usual.

I love Shiori to bits, but I can’t wait until she grows her hair out.

This kissing dance move is really cute.

Why does it seem like Naomi is trying to come off as sexy?

My god, Ai just looks super pretty in this PV.

You barely even noice the skyline. :/

Adorable! Makoto’s doesn’t really have the convincing fake smile down yet. But look how Shiori just glows.

Flawless.

I love Anna’s hair, but it doesn’t really fit with the PV. It’s too elegant.

I love how much they’re overacting.

Cute.

Lolz at Makoto’s lazy kick.

Yukimi kinda fades in the background. This is literally the first time I noticed her in the PV.

Look at Sako being all super cute.

I had no idea their sashes had their nicknames written on them. That’s actually really awesome.

Mio! *O*

Wink.

Cute outfits. And I love how Mio almost has bologna curls.

Um…what?

That’s too much Makoto. You’re looking at your friends, not a meteor hurtling towards Earth.

Adorable.

Still don’t get why we only see 2/3 of Passo.

Ok, here are the rest of the members. They better be running, there’s only about 30 seconds of the PV left.

I always run away from my friends. Totally.

SUPER GiRLS PV makes me jump for joy

A about a month ago the full PV for SUPER GiRLS’ title track off their 2nd album, EveryBody JUMP was released.

This PV is incredibly simple, yet I love absolutely every minute of it. I swear SUPER GiRLS keep getting better and better. They are forever flawless and forever underrated. This PV really shows off the charm of the girls. Since the song is called EveryBody JUMP the PV is pretty straightforward and mostly filled with scenes of the girls jumping. But the girls jump in just about every way imaginable. Jumping in the air, jumping over water, jumping out a window, and even jumping over the members themselves. I just find those scenes to be incredibly adorable and entertaining.

Another way the PV grabs your attention is with the close-up scenes. For the most part close-up scenes are rather boring unless they feature your favorite member or that particular member is doing something extremely adorable. But anymore SUPER GiRLS doesn’t have individual member close-ups. Instead they opt for 2-3 members in each close-up shot. Now, it’s probably done to save film. But I actually prefer that they do it like this, because I love the way the girls interact with one another. Usually their close-ups are pretty choreographed so the girls will do certain moves in unison or the girls will hug each other at the perfect moment. I can see people not liking this because you don’t see the girls true personalities shine through enough. But I think they add an additional cute and playful factor to the PV. Which is obviously always welcome.

And  surprisingly I really love the dance. While the moves are still the same old same old simple idol moves, it looks like they did put a bit more effort into the dance. The dance is polished and the moves are cute. But more importantly when you watch the dance you don’t immediately think that it’s too simple. Which is the impression you get far too often with idol dances.

I also think the outfits are really adorable. Of course we have the main blue outfits. That actually kind of look like winter jackets with shorts, but they are cute nonetheless. And you gotta love that once again they are shamelessly copying Passpo’s thing of putting their group colors onto their outfits. The second outfit, which is my favorite of the two, is pretty much just a standard school uniform. Expect instead of skirts they are wearing shorts because obviously they couldn’t wear skirts if they are jumping every 5 seconds. I actually like school uniforms in idol PVs, I never get sick of them.

I love that it’s full force from the get go. And I also love that Ami is front and center.

I’m not really bothered by how simple the set is. I honestly wish more PVs were filmed outside. You can’t beat natural lighting.

So much jumping already. Lol.

I really love moves like this. They really show just how in sync the group is.

Ami is such a cutie. And I never realized how much Ruka really looks like Kashiwagi Yuki.

Jumping high five.

Cute flying move.

Adorable. Especially Rina.

Rino is so cute.

Basketball has nothing to do with anything. But of course they had Reira do it.

Cute.

Love this move.

Adorable Rina.

I don’t get how people can jump like that.

Lol.

Probably the cutest scene in the whole PV.

Fail.

Impressive jump.

All of this jumping makes me think of MomoClo.

Jumping over water is a nice effect.

Peek-a-boo.

Mirei sucks at lip syncing, to such an extent she accidentally stick her toungeout. Lol.

Let’s all jump out the window and die!

Do not want.

Adorable.

I love that Ami flaps her wings. Lol.

Cute.

The moves during the dance break are amazing.

They gave Ruka the longest solo. Seems like they are going to be pushing her a lot more.

Ami is still my favorite though.

So cute.

Fairies to release 3rd single

It was announced at Fairies’s Valentine’s Day event that the group will be releasing their 3rd single. The single is currently untitled, but will be released on April 4th.

I really excited to see what kind of song this will be. Fairies are one of those idol groups worth keeping an eye on. They keep trying to make different songs than all the other idol groups out there. And because of that all of their songs have consistantly different from one another. They are also at a pretty high level of song and dance, and I’m really convinced that once they get a core fanbase they’ll be releasing some really amazing singles. Sweet Jewel by far was my favorite single by them. Let’s see if this single can top it.

Momoiro Clover Z-Mugen no Ai PV preview

A PV preview for Momoiro Clover Z’s up coming new single, Mouretsu Uchuu Koukyoukyoku Dainana Gakushou “Mugen no Ai”, has been released.

When I first saw pictures of MomoClo wearing their futuristic pirate outfits I had no idea what to expect from the PV. I did not for a minute expect we’d get just that, futuristic pirates. (Which I should of because apparently that’s exactly what the anime is about.) And as always, MomoClo takes a completely random concept and makes it work. The preview shows MomoClo riding on bicycles through the asteroid belt and riding through something that looks like it’s supposed to be a wormhole. We also see them dancing on the moon in front of their spaceship.
I absolutely love this PV, Momoiro Clover Z are one of those idol groups that never let me down. The main reason why this PV is so great is because it isn’t cheaply made. They could have gone S/mileage’s Shortcut route and just used a moon set. But the fact that they didn’t it what makes this PV awesome. So far at least. It looks like they spend some money on making the space background, and it shows. The  asteroids and the nebula look pretty realistic.
And I have to say even though they are riding on bicyles through space this is probably the most mature they’ve ever looked or sound in a PV. Of course this PV still has the random, silly, and upbeat flare that makes them, them.  But I’m just getting this mature vibe from their dance scenes and close-ups.

New idol message board, Pure Idol Heart

The good people at another idol centric blog, Pure Idol Heart, have recently created their own message board by the same name. Now, the message board is pretty bare right now because it’s brand new. But, I implore anyone out there who is intrested in idol music to check it out. The message board is dedicated 100% to idols and features well known groups like Hello!Project groups, AKB48, Idoling!!!, 9nine, SUPER GiRLS, and Passpo. To indie groups like Afilia Saga East. And every idol group in between! Pretty much if it’s an idol group this message board features them. This message board is also 100% user created. While the main topics were created by the board’s creators/moderators Gaki, Candy, and Mei.ka~, the actual topics and the group’s member’s sections are up to the message board posters themselves to create. Giving idol fans the option to create the sections for their favorite idols and idol groups. There are also Idol Village and Idol Underground sections. Idol village is for any well know known idol group or soloist that is not a part of H!P or the 48’s that have been left off the message board. Just leave a reply and the moderators will see to them being added to the list. And Idol Underground is for Indie and lesser known idols. There are no predetermined threads for the Idol Underground section so you can simple start a thread for them.

I know people might be turned off to join a message board that is brand new, or might even be hesitant to join if your favorite group doesn’t have a topic yet. But, you should really poke around a bit and see what the site is all about. And if no one is posting about your favorite group or idol, then sign up and be the first one to do so. And I’m sure with excited idol fans this message board’s community will be able to fill up in no time. I personally have been working on filling up the Hello!Project section. So, maybe dedicated idol fans like yourself can join and help this forum blossom into a big community.

This is the first message board I have found that is dedicated 100% to idols. Most other message boards are dedicated to one specific agency and then have sub sections for other idol groups. And a lot of times those sections for other idol groups aren’t really as active as they could be. They tend to get somewhat neglected since most of the posters are focused on whatever agency or group that specific board is mainly dedicated to. On this board since it’s for idols, and doesn’t have one specific idol group it’s dedicated to, each group can get the full attention they deserve. This message board just makes it so much easier to talk about idols especially if you like multiple idol groups from multiple agencies. Or at least, this forum will be able to do just that once it starts gaining members to post and make it flourish.

So, if anyone’s interested in checking out the message board here’s a link to it: http://z13.invisionfree.com/Pure_Idol_Heart/index.php?act=idx.

Are new members really what Passpo needs?

It was recently announced that Passpo is looking to add new members to the group. Right now their are 8 candidates up for full member status. Passpo is going to accept at least 1 member, but it is still possible that all 8 will be accepted making Passpo a 17 member group. Passpo’s next single will include a voting ticket for fans to choose which member they want to add. And the new member announcement will take place at Nakano Sun Plaza on March 31st.

Now, after Kaho graduated I didn’t think for one minute that they would be getting more members. Passpo seemed like a pretty stable group. And a fairly large one with with 9 members now that Mushu is gone. Since Kaho wasn’t exactly popular I didn’t really think that Passpo would really be taking a huge hit in popularity. And it’s not like the members of Passpo are getting too old by idol standards. They youngest member is 16 and the oldest is 20. Passpo is at a pretty good place, since the older members won’t have to worry about being told to graduate for another 4-5 years. So, the question then is: why are they even adding new members?

Usually when idol groups add new members it’s because of necessity. (Well, idol groups besides AKB48 and their sister groups) They add new members because members are leaving, like it was in S/mileage’s case. Or they add members because the current members are getting too old, like it was with Morning Musume. It seems like Passpo is adding members to increase their popularity. Which I don’t really think is the right way to go about it. It’s obvious that Passpo’s management is looking for a new girl or girls that will be at the level of popularity as Mio and Makoto are. Which is why they are going the very AKB48 route and asking fans to pick. But are a group of Mios really enough to make the entire group popular? I don’t really think it works that way. An idol group has to reach a certain popularity level before one member will determine how much the group sells. If your group is only selling around 45-50,000 copies, like Passpo does, it pretty much shows that even the most popular members aren’t influencing the sales that much. You’d have to sell around 100,000 or more for any one member to really matter. Case and point KAT-TUN. KAT-TUN for a while, before Jin left, was selling a lot of singles. Over 300,000 copies sometimes even over 400,000 copies. Making them the 2nd most popular Johnny’s group at the time. The last single with Jin sold 439,736 copies and the first single without him sold 255,618 copies. A difference of 184,118. Which is a substantial drop. Now, let’s say Mio and Makoto left the group tomorrow. I’d say we’d see about a 25,000 maybe 30,000 drop in Passpo’s sales. If it’s even that. I know they are the most popular members, but are their fanbases really even that large? I think it’s giving them too much credit. But for the sake of arguing let’s say it is. Now, that’s a pretty big drop, considering what they sell now. But if Passpo as a whole was a more popular group a loss that size is nothing. Well, the number of Mio and Makoto fans would also increase, but you get my point. Being the most popular member of a group that hardly sells isn’t that big of a deal.

Let’s say Passpo does find this amazing star member, she’ll at most increase their sales by about 20,000. So, that would bring Passpo’s sales up to about 70,000. Which still isn’t a very large number. Right now Passpo seems to be selling roughly the same amount for each release, they aren’t really growing beyond that. The only way to do that is to build the group itself up. To make the group gain interest to have them continue to steadily gain fans. Keeping the same amount of fans as the release before isn’t really progress.

Yeah, adding members might give the group some media attention for the time being. But once the new members are added the media will pay as much attention to Passpo as they always do, which isn’t really all that much. The only way for Passpo to actually sell more is to work for it. No idol group magically started selling a million copies. AKB48 is at the level they are at because of constant work. TV shows, radio shows, fan involvement, and brilliant marketing. The only way Passpo, or any other idol group for that matter, will ever follow suit is to do the same. Obviously with their own unique take on it. Maybe having the fans vote is something you’d expect from AKB48, and maybe it even seems like a rip off, but whatever helps the group, does it really matter? In the current AKB48 dominated idol world it’s hard for any idol group to not get swallowed up by them. Maybe AKB48 like tactics will entice new fans, but it’s the aspects of the group that aren’t like AKB48 that will keep the fans.

The management said that they are also trying to improve Passpo. To make their events and lives better. To get featured on more TV shows and in more magazines. And if they are using new members as the jumping point to do all of that, more power to them. If they see new members as a way for Passpo to reinvent themselves and garner more attention, then let them do it. I honestly don’t see the point in adding new members, but if it’s going to help make Passpo be the best they possibily can be, then I’m at least going to be open minded to the whole new members thing. Maybe us fans will be pleasantly surprised. Maybe the new members will be better than expected and open new doors for Passpo. It’s worth a shot at least. At least Passpo’s staff sees some flaws in Passpo and are trying to inprove them. Do I think the members are what needs improvement? Not really. But am I going to condemn the new member or members before I even give then a chance? Absolutely not.

YuiKaori to release new single

It was recently announced that YuiKaori will be releasing another single. The single is entitled Kimi no Yell and will be released March 14th.

This single almost completely flew under the radar to me. Mostly because YuiKaori hardly ever releases singles due to poor sales. But I absolutely adore YuiKaori both them and their songs are incredibly adorable. And I thought their Puppy album was cute, so I’m looking forward to what kind of song Kimi no Yell will be. Their singles usually always have really heavy dance music, so hopefully this single will follow suit.
