Take a journey to the 80’s with Amita

MaeshimaAmiSentimentalJourney

For SUPER GiRLS’ new single they decided to release a cover single. But it wasn’t any old cover single. No, instead they separated into 3 different entities and released 3 different songs, each song coming out of a different decade. Idol songs from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s. Think of Amuro Namie’s 60’s, 70’s, 80’s single but without original songs. I actually think it’s a really fun idea. I mean, Namie’s New Look has been my jam since it was released. And despite these songs being covers they are new to me because I obviously don’t live in Japan and haven’t heard them before. I actually don’t know of any idol music released before the 2000’s. Well the late 90’s technically. But I don’t count that because I don’t think liking Arashi’s and Momusu’s early music that makes me know anything about idols from the 90’s.

But I have to say, what I love most about this single is that my favorite SUPER GiRLS member Maeshima Ami got to release a solo single, Sentimental Journey. Which might be a little bit unfair to the other member’s and to the other member’s fans, especially since they could have added a few members from Twinkle Veil into Sentimental Journey. But hey, I very rarely like the most popular girl from an idol group, so I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the benefits of it now.

When I heard Sentimental Journey I was absolutely in love with it. It is such a cute and fun song. So, I had to go and listen to the original version to see how much they changed it. The original is by Matsumoto Iyo and I completely recommend listening to it because it’s fantastic.

I was surprised by the fact that they barely changed the song. The only thing they really changed was they made it sound less 80’s. All of the quintessential 80’s music has been upgraded to more danceable current idol sounding music, which I’m completely fine with. I don’t know though, if this song say anything it seems like the 80’s was a good decade for idol music.

I’m also really surprised with how high budget the PV for Sentimental Journey is. Usually when idol groups releases two or three PVs for one single the PVs are either extremely cheap looking or just mediocre. I mean, Arashi doesn’t even catch a break with this. But for this single all 3 PVs are very nice looking. I guess that’s the power of Avex though. Because even Kisumai makes better PVs being signed to Avex than Johnny’s artists that are signed to J Storm make.

However, the PV isn’t anything super spectacular, and there are really only 2 scenes in the entire PV. But what I love about it is that it just feels like an idol PV. It’s cute, it’s pink, it’s girly, and it’s fun. And it doesn’t really have to be anything more than that. It’s just completely carefree. I don’t really think this PV needs much more than Ami in it for it to be a great PV. Ami just oozes idol from every pore. And that’s what I think I love about her. She’s adorable and she just has this immediate idol feeling and presence. And I’m sure that’s a main part of her popularity. it’s pretty much the only reason I like her because I have to be honest with you I don’t know really anything about Ami or SUPER GiRLS in general personality wise.

Just because I’d be perfectly happy with just Ami and no bells and whistles doesn’t mean everyone would be, and of course this PV has a little bit more going on than that. The impression I get from this PV is that they are playing up her youthfulness and idol qualities. The PV to me looks like Ami is just walking around town as a sweet teenage girl when suddenly she comes across a fashionable cafe. She peers in the window and sees all these fashionable mature adult women drinking coffee and reading fashion magazines. It actually looks like she’s reading something like Taste of Home, Women’s Day, or Southern Living, but I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and say they don’t have those magazines in Japan. And I’m going to take an even bigger stab in the dark and say the cliche of fashion magazines fits better. While I do think the PV is cute I could have done with a little less cliche.

Ami longs to be that mature adult women and of course goes inside. But she soon discovers the tastes of the cafe both clothing and drink wise are too mature for her. Eventually Ami gives in and realizes she’s not an adult just yet. And we see Ami giving in and eating something more typical idol like, a parfait. Wow it’s like seriously every idol song you’ve ever heard made into the story line of a PV. Filled with every cliche you can possibly imagine. It’s almost funny. But once your realize that it’s being serious and not satire all you can really do is just groan. I don’t know about girls in Japan, but when I was a teenage girl I wanted to be an adult for more freedom. I wanted to stay out later, go where I wanted, and do as I pleased. I didn’t care about being seen as an adult, being a fashionable woman, or drink coffee. Those aren’t legit feelings. Well they are legit feelings, just not the feelings of a teenage girl. Those are what little girl who are about 8 years old feel. Not a teenage girl.

I love idol music I do, but it’s sometimes filled with too many cliches for women that these middle aged male lyricists think are natural feelings, but aren’t at all. I think honestly Tsunku is the closest any of them have ever come to what women really feel. There have only been a few times where it’s too much. But I have to say that Aki-P is the absolute worst with it. I think that’s why a majority of his lyrics are written from the male point of view. But it’s awkward for female idols to sing songs from the male point of view 90% of the time. But I digress.

My favorite part of the PV though has to be the singing scenes. Ami is wearing this cute lolita dress and she looks just so adorable and absolutely stunning. And you have to give them props because the dress is pretty similar to a dress Matsumoto Iyo wore in one of her performances of this song.

MatsumotoIyo

Ami’s is just a more updated and cuter version of it. And obviously pink instead of red since it’s her image color. The dance moves are always about as simple as the dance moves that Matsumoto Iyo did while performing the song.

The set is a little cheap but I love that it’s supposed to be an amusement park. And I love the parts where she is riding the carousel horse. It just adds another cute element to the PV.

Though I guess I am contradicting myself because those are probably the most typical idol scenes in the whole PV. But I do love them. I love idols being cute but not a walking cliche. Well, they can be the cutesy idol cliche but I’ve just had it up to here with the cliche for women. Of oh no I need to diet, etc. It’s not all that women worry about you know. Even an on-the-money weather report reported by a scholar can’t predict a girl’s fancies, after all.

SentimentalJourney

Cute shoes. But gosh I can’t tell you the last time I skipped anywhere.

SentimentalJourney2

Cute umbrella, cute skirt, just cute all around.

SentimentalJourney3

Gorgeous. I love this dress.

SentimentalJourney4

I love when she squints her eyes when she smiles.

SentimentalJourney5

Cream Baby Cafe.

SentimentalJourney6

Ami can’t forget to put on her invisible earring now.

SentimentalJourney7

Some of these dance moves though. Now she’s pretending to wash her hair.

SentimentalJourney8

She looks a little more horrified than interested.

SentimentalJourney9

Gosh I can’t wait until I’m an adult and can drink coffee. I heard it’s strictly prohibited until you get your adult card when you turn 21.

SentimentalJourney10

Too cute.

SentimentalJourney11

I don’t understand why she’s sitting in such awe. She’s in a cafe she didn’t stumble upon Narnia.

SentimentalJourney12

That shocked face.

SentimentalJourney13

Omg I just want to hug her.

SentimentalJourney14

The moment when Ami remembers she can’t actually read.

SentimentalJourney15

Pick the polka dot ones.

SentimentalJourney16

Yes, because women wear dresses like that to go to a cafe and not to places like a cabaret club.

SentimentalJourney17

That overreaction.

SentimentalJourney18

See, Ami is too sweet to wear something like that.

SentimentalJourney19

Good old idol 2 step.

SentimentalJourney20

What even is this move?

SentimentalJourney21

Adorable.

SentimentalJourney22

I don’t understand why she’s so satisfied she has coffee? She’s not a little girl.

SentimentalJourney23

Attagirl make sure you get approval from everyone else first.

SentimentalJourney24

Adorable reaction though.

SentimentalJourney25

I’m guessing it’s espresso and not coffee. Which I’ve never actually had myself.

SentimentalJourney26

Cutie.

SentimentalJourney27

That’s a good looking parfait I must admit. It kinda looks like there’s peanut butter in the bottom of it though.

SentimentalJourney28

Completely necessary eating scene. I remember people being angry that Koharu didn’t actually eat the pancakes in the Papancake PV. So, someone appreciates this.

SUPER GiRLS announce 3rd single

It was announced that Avex idol group SUPER GiRLS will be releasing their 3rd single. The single is called Joshiryoku Paradise and will be released on October 5th.

I’ve been follwing SUPER GiRLS pretty much since day one, so I’m excited to see them release another single. Their last song and PV were upbeat and fun, so I’m curious what kind of song this will turn out to be. Also, since their last PV was a summer and bikini themed PV I wonder what direction this one will take. Hopefully this song will have a nice chunk of Ami like the last one did.

You can of course buy this single from CDJapan by clicking the links below.

SUPER GIRLS show off more then their hearts in new PV

Avex idol group SUPER GIRLS, have released their PV for Max! Otome Gokoro off their 2nd single. Also since I’m pretty sure their 2nd single is a double A-side, so most likely expect another PV from this single.

I have been following SUPER GIRLS almost since their formation. But I didn’t really take notice until they announced their major debut and released their first PV for Miracle ga Tommanai. And I have to say that I like SUPER GIRLS. I like their look and overall sound. But I have to say at their best SUPER GIRLS are and always have been walking idol cliches. Fans have been complaining about and noticing their similarities to other idol groups since their first PV. And like I said in my PV review of Miracle ga Tommanai it was pretty much a carbon copy of every idol PV out there. And that seems to be what SUPER GIRLS are continuing to do. They look at whatever is popular in idol PV and copy it to get more exposure and fans. People like to say that SUPER GIRLS are mostly copying AKB48, because AKB48 whole theme is wearing school uniforms and they have bikini PVs. But honestly SUPER GIRLS takes elements from all the idol groups out there. The Ganbatte Seishun PV not only reminds me of AKB48, but their are some similarities to Buono and S/mileage PVs. Even ManoEri’s Seishun no Serenade was filmed in a school.
But with the Max! Otome Gokoro PV it seems like they just had to make a PV that featured everyone’s favorite fanservice, the bikini PV. When I first watched the PV of course I was unimpressed because to me the bikini PVs are extremely flat. And not just because I’m a girl and the fanservice is wasted on me, but because I think bikini PVs are getting really old. AKB48 has done 2 now, Berryz Koubou and Morning Musume had those bikini PVs in their Allo-Hello DVDs. And I can see as a new idol group who is competing with AKB48, they felt they had to do a bikini themed PV but really they didn’t. Look at idol group Ebisu Muscats. Despite being an idol group made up of gravure and AV idols, they have yet to release a bikini PV. And when Momoiro Clover had a summer song. They didn’t wear bikinis either. They opted to make it a more playful PV. And that’s pretty much how I prefer my idols to be. Cute, fun, silly, playful, and singing extremely upbeat and happy music. Which is why I adore SUPER GIRLS. Yes, they might be every idol cliche in the book, but I like idol cliches. They turn out to be my favorite idol groups, songs, and PVs. If I wanted anything beyond regular idol fare, I obviously wouldn’t be listening to idol music in the first place.

But none of that really has anything to with the Max! Otome Gokoro PV. Reading all of that above you’d probably think I didn’t like the PV but I actually did. Because despite of it being obvious fanservice which does nothing for me, they still managed to do it in a very cute and playful way. They weren’t rubbing lotion on each other or having a pillow fight in lingerie. It was more or less and innocent PV that they just happened to be wearing bikinis in. Well, as innocent as dancing in bikinis can be received. And being a fan as idols as long as I have I realized these PVs are done mostly for fanservice. But they are also done in good fun, to be playful and tease the viewer. Which is an aspect I can appreciate. I like the playful aspect of this PV. How they also added elements of humor. I like when my idols parade around acting all idoly. Whether it’s in bikinis, or school uniforms, or hideous concert outfits.

Of course the PV has to start off showing their school uniforms.

Let the idol deja vu begin!

It wouldn’t feel quite like an idol PV without an insanely simple dance.

And the bikinis begin just a little before the minute mark. They actually really pretty though. I completely would steal snorkle girl’s and Rika’s. XD

Adorable! Ami is the cutest and definitely one of my favorites.

Kaede is really pretty. She almost looks like Saori’s twin to me.

I can totally see why Rika is on of the most popular members. However, Rino is looking really adorable too.

Cute.

This is the first time Mirei actually looks pretty.

Lolz.

I think I’m Ami biased.

For some reason I really love this scene. XD

Look at Ruka looking all cute.

Words can’t even begin to describe how random this is.

And now there in yukatas for some reason.

Aya looks cute here.

Awkward dance move.

Not sure how this is supposed to be scary.

I think it’s actually really cute to have them pretend to film and direct.

Lolz.

SUPER GIRLS to release 2nd single

Avex idol group SUPER GIRLS announced they will be releasing their 2nd single sometime June. The single is titled MAX! Otomegokoro / Happy GO Lucky! ~Happy Lucky de Go!~. Since there’s a slash that means this single will most likely be another double A-side. Was their last single a double A-side? Well, both songs got PV, so I’m just going to assume it was. XD
Also this single will be used as the ending theme song for the anime Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream.

I am actually really excited that SUPER GIRLS is going to be releasing another single. I thought their last single was amazing. A lot of people think SUPER GIRLS are too run of the mill idol groups. But I absolutely adore them and their style. Because honestly run of the mill idol music, is my favorite type of idol music. I listen to it because it’s happy and upbeat, not because it’s meaningful. Well, that’s not to say I don’t like the meaningful songs as well. XD
Anyway, I’m really looking forward to hearing what their new single sounds like. Even though it’s months away.

If you want to buy their 2nd single you can do so from CDJapan, by clicking the links below.

SUPER GIRLS preview their debut album

With only 11 days until Avex’s idol group SUPER GIRLS’s debut album, Chouzetsu Shoujo, is released they are previewing all 10/14 tracks from their album on their official site. You can listen to the clips here.

Since I’ve been following the SUPER GIRLS pretty closely since they announced there debut, I was pretty excited to hear this news. The only down side is the previews are only 29 seconds. Which isn’t really enough time to get a feel for the songs. Like the first track, Welcome to ♥ S☆G Show!!, all you can hear is a small clip of music. The rest is some guy introducing the girls in better than I was expecting English. But the music could completely change after that part, so it sucks. But it’s only 11 more days to wait.

It’s exciting because I remember some of the songs from their Tokyo Idol Festival performance. Most of the songs you can preview sound pretty much all the same. Extremely happy, upbeat, cutesy idol music. It’s pretty much on par and sounds the same as every other idol group out there. Which doesn’t really bother me because that’s the exact type of idol music I love.

Number 10, NIJIIRO Namida (Which translates to rainbow colored tears) seems to be their only slow paced/sad song so far. Which is awesome because I tend to hate slow paced songs. But it really depends on the lyrics, which I don’t understand yet.

SUPER GIRLS are miracles that don’t stop

SUPER GIRLS released their debut PV, Miracle ga Tommanai, through their USTREAM account. Since this song isn’t a single, and is coming straight off their debut album Chouzetsu Shoujou, I wonder if this means some other songs will get PVs too? I would love for that to happen, but honestly I doubt it will.

A lot of people were expecting another completely unique idol group. Since Avex usually makes out of the ordinary idol groups like Hinoi Team and AAA. But honestly I am really excited to another SweetS type idol group from Avex.
The song and PV are pretty much carbon copies of every other idol group that’s out there. Which is completely expected. It’s hard to make an idol group now a days, that’s actually original. The PV is pretty simple, almost boring. But since it’s their first PV you have to cut them some slack.

I absolutely love the outfits.

This chick looks like a mix between Ariyasu Momoka and Watanabe Mayu. And I hate the super low quality. XD

  Well, she’s cute.

Wow, this girl is the prettiest.

Look, it’s Tsuji Nozomi mixed with Tanaka Reina.

  Super pretty.

  Adorable.

Oh man, she has a cute voice to match.

She totally looks like Hayami Akari mixed with Akimoto Sayaka.

  Group hug!

The random hearts reminds me of Ice Creamusume’s debut PV, but I’m too lazy to go make a cap. XD

Haato! She has Arihara Kanan ears, except more intense.

I really need to stop making caps of this girl. But she’s just so pretty.

Oh man, it’s just like Perfume’s Baby Cruising Love. Too lazy to make a cap of that too. XD

  E~n!

  Cute!

The cutest girls in one line.

Avex Idol group SUPER GIRLS to make debut

Avex’s new idol group, SUPER GIRLS, announced at a recent concert that they will be making their CD debut on December 22nd. They will be releasing a full album entitled Chouzetsu Shoujo.

I have to admit I haven’t really been keeping up with this group. Mostly because there hasn’t really been anything to keep up with. Aside from their formation, auditions, and live performances, they haven’t really been doing much of anything. But since they are finally making their debut I am pretty interested. And the group is singed to Avex, so it will most likely be really popular. So I decided to check them out.

First things first, the girls.

For the most part the girls look really cute. Especially the girl dead center with the pigtails. My god she looks like a mix between Watanabe Mayu and Michishige Sayumi. I’m pretty sure it’s 12 year old Ami Takuya. I also really like their overall look. Though it’s pretty standard for idols.

And next the music. Since they haven’t released a single or PV, I have to go by live performances. Which by the way, are pretty hard to find. But luckily I found their performance at the 2010 Tokyo Idol Festival.

The songs are really cute. But there’s not really anything that stands out about them. They pretty much sounds like every other idol group out there. Actually their music sounds a lot like Idoling!!! But I ended up liking each song more than the last.

The solos are also a little bit rough. And no one in the group is an overly amazing singer. But they are idols after all. Bad singing is basically in their job description.

I will most likely be keeping an eye on them from now on. Let’s see if their debut album and possible PV are any good.

SUPER GIRLS at Tokyo Idol Festival part 2:

Namie gets Wild

Namie Amuro’s new single, Wild/Dr, is being released March, 18th. This is Namie’s first single of 2009. Her last release being the widely popular single 60s, 70s, 80s. Dr. is featured in a Vidal Sassoon CM while Wild is featured in a Coca Cola zero commercial. After a little over a year without Namie single, all I can say is it’s about time!

Namie seems to really be back with this single. Wild is absolutely fantastic. The music is very danceable and has a lot of techno elements to it. And is so different then anything Namie has done before. Namie sings this song with a lot of intensity and yet still manages it to be very soft and sweet at some parts. Just like most Namie songs there’s some English lyrics, but even more than usual. Close to half the song is sung in English.

The video looks like it has a futuristic theme. I guess to fit with the dance/techno like music. Which is a little cliche if you ask me. But Namie really has a demanding presence in this video. I never loose focus from her. Mostly because she looks gorgeous in it. At one pint she’s wearing this very sleek silver dress, and she just look incredible in it. The video is very powerful. And even though the dance is simple she dances with intensity. And the rocks falling behind her at one point is pretty epic.

Namie’s back!

 Cute pose

Not really a fan of the moon set but that dress is fabulous

Gorgeous with her blown out hair

Reminds me of the BoA- Eat You Up video

I love the semi fishnet glove

Intense part of the dance

Namie falls gracefully
